"The cleanup in baseball is about to begin. ... MLB is informing clubs about planned in-game protocols to bar non-uniformed personnel from the clubhouse, close video rooms, turn off all live video feeds except for the replay review monitor, and crack down on the use of 'engineered' substance mixtures by pitchers."

All signs, and buzz, are pointing to TJ surgery.

Wow, that's insane. He'd be done for 2020 and probably a good portion of 2021.

It'll be interesting to see if the Red Sox go full rebuild if they don't make the playoffs this year, or if they just throw money at the roster.

They can't throw money at it, when they're up against the cap.

Here's an idea to bring up some discussion assuming the worst for Sale. If you were the Jays would you offer to take Sale's contract off Boston's hands? Full contract, only scrub players switching teams.

Assuming the first 1.5 years are a wash, you're essentially paying 3.5/$145M for a post-surgery 32 yo pitcher. Except that money is spread out where 2020 is kinda sort of a wash and salary can be absorbed anyways and he should be ready for a 2021 playoff run. Then you have him anchoring the rotation in 2022 for the relative bargain price of $30 million when salary constraints might get a little more tight.

If there was a team that would be able to do this, it would be the Jays given the contention window and ability to absorb near-term salary.

No chance, but they likely wouldn't have to eat the whole contract. Would Boston really say no if a team swooped in and said they would eat say 70%?

I wouldn't go near something like that if it were up to me. Potentially paying Sale $60 million for the next few seasons for little to no return is incredibly risky. The Jays already have an expensive risky veteran in Ryu on the roster that could easily end up hurt a good chunk of the time, so instead of just tying up $20 million a year for a super variable return, now you have $50 million tied up instead. And there is zero guarantee how Sale would bounce back after surgery either. Makes much more sense to take the money you'd be paying Sale and sign someone with a little less terrifying range out potential outcomes.

MLB is getting some positive reviews from social media/ESPN for the players being mic’d, from what I’ve seen online. Only a matter of time before every team does this.

Posted
Theyll keep getting good reviews until the first even minor contoversial word is heard from a player, then theyll be an uproar.

I don't think having the microphone there necessarily implies there'll be uncut audio throughout the game. This will be similar to how the other leagues implement it where they pick and choose random clips through the game.

"Hello, and welcome to the Amazon Prime Network, home of the 2030 MLB playoffs! We’re in Montreal today, ready to start down a winding postseason road as the Tampa-Montreal ExRays take on the visiting Minnesota Twins. I’m Joe Buck, here with color man Chris Archer, an ex-Ray himself. Chris, what a postseason this is shaping up to be!"

"That’s right, Joe. We have Tampa-Montreal vs. Minnesota here this afternoon, with seven more first-round series scheduled to start later today and tomorrow. And those are just the first steps in a lengthy sprint to the finish line: 16 teams, four rounds, and ultimately one champion to raise the World Series trophy."

Playful article from The Ringer on a hypothetical postseason scenario in the year 2030: https://www.theringer.com/mlb/2020/3/5/21165435/mlb-in-2030-expanded-playoff-field-16-teams?stream=top

They probably won't make the playoffs this year, but the White Sox are now set up to be an elite team from as early as next season.

Lindblom looks like the real deal, a top 100 SP easy, me thinks. :)

So two things.

1) It's ST, this is a ridiculous claim to make after what, less than 9 innings of work, some of it against minor leaguers?

2) A top 100 SP is basically saying you think he's probably better than ~1.2 WAR. Not exactly high praise is it?

Very high praise, call it my own intuition, but I see an easy #3, he'll easily surpass that value Org, this is my bold prediction... 2.5 fWAR +

ETA: Barring injury of course.

Welp...

Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander felt soreness in his triceps and made an early exit from an exhibition start Sunday, and the AL Cy Young Award winner was headed for more tests.

Verlander was set to pitch four innings against the New York Mets. But with his velocity down from his previous start, Verlander was pulled after two scoreless innings.

"It's some tricep soreness, so we took him out as a precaution," Astros manager Dusty Baker said.

"We're going to send him to go get some tests run and make sure it's nothing. We've got to take care of the big horse," he said.
