Seems like a bit of a raw deal for Peralta. I don't know if he really gained anything; he gets that money in all likelihood even if he has a pedestrian season. But this extension kills his chance at a much richer contract, and this guy has two 4 win seasons on his resume.

I'm not sure about much richer unless he did put up 4 wins, he will be turning 33 this year so there's a good chance his best years are behind him. If he's injured again could kill his value. He's probably comparable to Calhoun who'll get 2/16M, or 3/23M if the team option is picked up.

He will be 33 next year. If his performance dips or even remains in line with what he did in 2019, he's probably not getting more than a two year deal anyway. Pretty smart deal on his part, IMO. Corner outfielders in their 30's are not a hot commodity in free agency.

I don't love the comp. Peralta has been basically league average even in his down years, whereas Calhoun has oscillated between replacement level and league average over the last three years. Peralta is the better projected player.

 

Peralta was projected to get nearly $9M in arbitration so he's only tacking $13M guaranteed onto that. I think even if he has a down year for David Peralta he'd be an attractive enough commodity to get a Calhoun type free agent deal. Sure, he could suffer a huge injury but everyone in baseball has that risk.

Just shows Calhoun's been more consistent. I'd be worried about Peralta's shoulder. 33 years old, and had problems with it in back to back years.

I wonder if Stevenson is still "useless filler" now that the Rays traded for him.

 

Lol...I think at this very moment, he may, just may be the best player (not prospect) in that trade. It certainly did not age well.

 

By virtue that he is in A+ and Fisher is already in the bigs, I wouldn't go that far (yet), but the Rays evaluate talent better than just about everyone. If they think Stevenson is good or has potential to be good, then he just might be. Curious to see how he develops going forward. He has zero power and the scouting report in the other thread seemed to imply that he can't play a position well, so it's going to be hard for him to overcome those issues if they are not correctable, but dammit the Rays could turn one of us into a competent big leaguer, so who knows.

 

And just like that, Cal Stevenson has become a B+ prospect...

 

I wonder who teams would take straight up. A borderline prospect like Cal Stevenson or a 26 year old with 36%k rate in more than 400 mlb at bats

The Orioles are literally the AL East's dumpster. It's so great.

 

I will not miss him, but he may be a good bench piece. If given 500 AB I will bet he provides > 1 WAR. On a championship team, he's be a decent bench piece. Great defense and will get the occasional hit. But he has no place on the Jays rosters. On a OF-heavy team, maybe.

I dunno about everyone that you quoted, but I think it was pretty obvious that my comment was "in the opinion of the myriad Rays worshippers on the board, his prospect status has been upgraded, as they believe everything the Rays touch is gold..."

Lol at including me as a Rays jockrider. I hate everything about the Rays. Their stadium sucks, their ownership sucks, they have no fans, they trade someone the moment they have to pay them a 7 figure salary or sign them to lowball contracts, etc, etc. They are horrible for baseball. But one thing they do well is develop talent and get the most out of them. I can't deny that. The Yankees develop hitters better than anyone. The Astros can fix pitchers (....and cheat) better than anyone. The Rays have a mixture of both.

 

When I expect everything the Rays do to work out for them, it's not out of worship, it's out of spite. I hate that they can do that.
