Is anyone else having a hard time understanding the perception that Daniel Hudson is worth more than like 1-2M on a 1-year deal? The fact that he just got 2/11 is insane to me.

His agent did really well. Minor league deal for 2018, minor league deal for 2019, no appreciable skill change to this point but they were able to leverage some luck and ERA results (and postseason results) into $11M.

 

Actually for 2017 he had signed an identical 2/$11M deal that was obviously dead-money by the end of the year. Pitt dumped him off to Tampa who cut him in March 2018. This one might turn out the same!

The Nationals definitely outbid themselves on this one, might honestly just be looking at ERA and vetrin presents combined with that WS closer thing. Although in his defense he was a lot better on the Nats than on the Blue Jays and was a a near extreme flyball guy and for those guys their xFIPs are usually inflated, not sure if fairly so. Good luck once that sub .250 BABIP regresses next season though.

Hudson deal makes no sense at all but some times teams are willing to reward players after a title. This might be one of those cases. Good for him.

Thames is very limited defensively and is basically a platoon bat. Shaw can play 1B, 2B, 3B, and no doubt, LF.

Lol @ steal, Jonn. Did you know that Shaw projects better both offensively and defensively than Thames? Oh and he's actually playable at more than one position.

Shaw's a really good fit for us. Our overall team defense kind of sucks and even though he doesn't have much time at 1B to judge properly, he should be pretty good there. So it'll be nice to have at least one above average fielder in the lineup, even if it's only 1B.

 

He's also good at 3B so he can play there when Vlad needs a mandatory fat guy day off. Shaw didn't seem to embarrass himself at 2B either when he played there some in 2018.

Considering some of the garbage contracts around Baseball. I would say getting Thames that cheap is a nice pickup. A lot of assumption that Shaw is going to bounce back to where he was. Maybe he just sucks now. Either way at 1B in a platoon I would have preferred Thames. Plain and simple that’s my opinion. No need for the dick bag comments. That’s why new people don’t post here.

Thames is 33 and projects for half a win in 400 PAs, which is basically market value if not below market value for what the Nats will be paying him? I don't think anyone is expecting Shaw to bounce back to being a 3.5 win player, but if you assume that he didn't just forget how to play baseball then one would think that a 29 year old Shaw should regress to his career mean, which is a versatile infielder who is a decent or above hitter. Considering they're making the same money I'd much prefer Shaw over Thames.

Shaw -36 wRC+ last year vs LHP. 78 wRC+ for his career (540 PA's).

 

Jays were pretty awful vs. LHP last year, Shaw certainly won't change that.

I think it's better than the rest of their off-season moves, outside of the Asdribble move.

At least with Shaw's 3B experience there's a good chance Drury is sent to the minors as depth once he's shown no improvement. Because Drury has an option (and as you say Atkins likes him for some reason) I don't think we'll see him DFA until the end of the year now.

It sounds like Toronto may have indicated to Shaw that he would be an everyday player. I don't think he will platoon from the start but it may end up that way.
