Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 I guess if they have even roughly $1.5M it's enough to make a legit overture. Remember Ohtani's signing bonus was only like $2.3M... With a *wink, wink* promise of a guaranteed contract after a year.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 Right, holy s***?! For those that want a gander... https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=suzuki001sei Suzuki sounds like he's likely a better defender than Soto as he's won Japanese gold gloves in right field. Add that to the premium offense and this looks like a dude that is going to get PAID.

Add that to the premium offense and this looks like a dude that is going to get PAID. He's a guy that seems to check almost all the boxes. Except for Tabler's "big, strong guy" criterion. If he is posted, I would really go for him. He seems like a perfectionist, and would never just sit on a fat cat contract.
Amok Verified Member Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 They got money from trades.... something like $1.25 million total or something. That number is from April/May, so it will have Morales and Smith's trade money in it. Is there another deal after that date?

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 What’s left on lowrie contract One more year at $10 million.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 I wonder if Mookie Betts is a good MLB comparable? Well... I'm not going there, lol. He looks like a Godzilla coming from Japan as small as Baby Yoda!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 Francys Romero @FrancysRomero10 Sources from Cuba confirm that Oscar Luis Colas, the Cuban Ohtani, left the island in last hours and will pursue an MLB contract. Colas debuted in 2019 on the NPB with HR on their first turn at bat. Jays will be all over this but so will everyone else. Time to trade some fringe 40 man roster types for international draft money.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 I'm more interested in Seiya Suzuki. He's putting up gaudy numbers in Japan. Should be posted after this season. Carp f***ed up on Kikuchi (the 2B not the s***** pitcher) by not posting him. I can't see them missing out on getting the max financially on Suzuki next season.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2020 Author Posted January 4, 2020 That won't be necessary. You just have to suck it up and take the full penalty for this guy. The rules were changed - it's now a hard cap so the only way you can go over your allocation is by trading for extra money. Time to make a deal with the Orioles!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 Weeks of bidding has reportedly driven the price tag for Josh Donaldson into the nine-figure range over a four-year term, with at least three clubs said to be sitting at that lofty price point. The end game may now be upon us. The star third baseman has given teams what amounts to a firm and final asking price, according to a report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription link). Donaldson is “simply waiting for one of the clubs to his number” — around $110MM — per the report.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 I’m glad a late bloomer in Donaldson is gonna get his big pay check while he was making relative pennies during his MVP seasons. The deal is likely going to get ugly in the back end of it, but I’m glad he’ll have gotten his big contract.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 2.5M for Asdrubal Cabrera apparently. It seems like he signs for less than he’s worth every offseason.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 Stammen back to Pads, in another instance of a 35 year old reliever getting more than I expected.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 Stammen back to Pads, in another instance of a 35 year old reliever getting more than I expected. Even in a very weak reliever market teams have spent 170M.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 With the general weakening of SP across the league, reliever value has gone up?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 With the general weakening of SP across the league, reliever value has gone up? I guess one thing Stammen has going for him that most typical relievers don't is that he's seemingly always available and can go for 2 innings, as evidenced by several 80 IP seasons out of the bullpen, including the last three years. I'm not sure someone with an identical skillset who was only a lock for ~55 innings would get as much, but I'm just spitballing.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 or the Padres are dumb This just goes without saying.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 I’m glad a late bloomer in Donaldson is gonna get his big pay check while he was making relative pennies during his MVP seasons. The deal is likely going to get ugly in the back end of it, but I’m glad he’ll have gotten his big contract. If he gets $100-110m in free agency like expected, then he’ll clear about $180-190m for his career. Not bad for a late bloomer whose first year of arb was at age 29 and last year of arb was a lost season due to injury. His prime years were incredible. Jose cleared $100m for his career but did not bet on himself after 2010 (instead went for the extension) and ended up losing a ton of money. If he became a FA after 2011, he would have cashed out big time. By the time he did become a FA he had already begun his decline. Edwin is well over $100m now and could get another $24m if his option is picked up. JD made out the best out of the late bloomer group, but he was also the best player out of that group so makes sense.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 5, 2020 Posted January 5, 2020 Don't just read the quote. The entire answer was excellent. Brings us back to Boxy's discussion about making an outspoken player the voice of baseball.
