wilko Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 but what explains the apparent relative 'success' against left-handed batters? It's not like he is blowing them away with a high 90s fastball with good command. No idea. It's just so far this year. Throughout his career he's been slightly better VS RHB.

It's not like he is blowing them away with a high 90s fastball with good command. It's just randomness in a short season with a small sample. Roark throughout his career is significantly better against RHH than LHH. He has a career 3.63 FIP against RHH and 4.71 FIP against LHH. He's just been terrible all around, even against lefties this year against whom he's been "better" he has a brutal 5.57/5.11 FIP/xFIP with a ton of walks.

Look at the HR/9 lol... gross. His numbers are just overall ugly... https://www.fangraphs.com/players/tanner-roark/8753/splits?position=P&season=2020#Advanced

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 I like Ray man... “Thankfully I’ve done it before and I’ve done it in the postseason,” Ray said. “I’ve done it in the 2017 Wild Card Game, I came in after the starter. I’ve done it before and I’ve done it in pressure situations. Thankfully I have that, but I’m here and I’m doing whatever I can to help the team win.” Him an Shoe!

I still believe that Danny Jansen can be a valuable starter on a championship calibre team.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 Nice cherry pick Not sure how he created the comparison group but when creating a comparison group you need to have players who are better and a few who are worse in each category. You want players with an average of Jansen's bb, k, and power rates. Using Jansen's rates as the minimum means the group will be Danny Jansen and guys who have better bb, k, and power rates.

This is very true. Let me try EV at least 94.8mph K rate no higher than 5.6% Alejandro Kirk No one else. In 2019: 0 players

Sure, if you're actually trying to create fair comps. But if the goal is to just lump Jansen in with a short list of really good names to bug Boxcar then you just do what I did. I think even if you expand all the buckets though, you'd just be scooping up a few more solid names. It's rare to walk that much, hit for some power, and avoid strikeouts.

Right No way he gets a atart of course But there are lots of guys who have been steady in the pen that Charlie will use over Pearson. Maybe on a day the starter gets pulled early.
