Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Do you guys believe this signing will affect the way the Jays plan to attack the remainder of this off season, in terms of being more aggressive in pursuing further immediate help? Good question! I think they probably should shore up the roster as much as they can. If the young guys explode next year we could be pretty good.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Do you guys believe this signing will affect the way the Jays plan to attack the remainder of this off season, in terms of being more aggressive in pursuing further immediate help? Yes, I think bullpen and 1B/DH are the priorities now and there are FA for both. Suspect the Jays are fine with a Gurriel, Hernandez, Grichuk, Fisher OF.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Been harsh on Atkins lately but he deserves props. He did the ole "trade a player and then sign another" move that fans always suggest but it rarely works out like that. Traded Stroman for SWR and Kay and then used the money that would have gone to a Stro extension anyway to replace him with Ryu. Impressive.

The only bad results with this FO has been the result of holding onto some assets too long.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 I think there's certainly more incentive to shore up the roster. It probably makes them more likely to hold on Giles. It should also make them take a harder look at bullpen upgrades like Stammen, Betances, and McHugh. Maybe a legit bench piece or two. Agreed. Makes sense to keep Giles now. If hes good but the team is stumbling in 3rd or 4th place in July you can trade him then
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 The only bad results with this FO has been the result of holding onto some assets too long. Orioles are the kings of this
tazsub3 Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 In fairness I dont think people mean absolutely no one...but it is a challenge to get some guys to want to play in Canada. in today's world political climate, it might be an advantage with many to come live in canada, especially for many latin and asian players with young families.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Orioles are the kings of this Not sure, Orioles have virtually zero assets of value.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 I just realized that if everything goes according to plan, we’ll have a 1-2 of Ryu-Pearson by May/June.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Not sure, Orioles have virtually zero assets of value. I mean over the last few years. Machado, Britton, etc
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 I mean over the last few years. Machado, Britton, etc Yes, was/is a very stupid org. Even the Dog could do a better job.
Kelly Gruber Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Agreed. Makes sense to keep Giles now. If hes good but the team is stumbling in 3rd or 4th place in July you can trade him then Totally agree. Best case scenario is that the team is doing good enough to actually care about keeping a closer beyond the trade deadline. More realistically we will probably find ourselves in the middle ground of not being in a playoff spot, but not so far back that selling is an obvious choice. The prudent choice is probably to still move Giles at the deadline. Nothing saying we can't sign him back again in the offseason. Not sure we will have to pay significantly more in FA vs what an extension will be cost anyways. Even if we do, I can stomach having turned $$$ into prospects. I would imagine him getting to be part of a better winning environment for a half-season helps chances of coming back in FA as well.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 So wait...a four year deal with a full no trade clause. So the guy actually WANTS to be here for the full term of the contract and didn't just sign for the heck of it because the Jays offered the 4th year. I wonder how Team Krylian and the rest of the self-hating Canadians explain this one. Oh yeah, non-American. Well last I checked the percentage of players comprising the redneck MAGA demographic who put Canada on the same terms as Burkina Faso in the "foreign" department is in decline. So the Jays will be alright.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Yeah I don't think Giles is moved now until July. Of course if a team offers something great then they'll do it, but no need to dump him for anything short of a really good deal, which may not be out there this winter. I don't think anything changes with Giles. I think you can remove the "really" if a good fit comes along you take it. If that is a 19 year old kid you like you take it.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 As far as shoring up the BP. I'm in favour of getting another SP (like Price) and using the mediocre but very deep "starting" staff as fodder for the bullpen and hope there is some Britton or Wade Davis magic somewhere in there. Rather than spending good money to sign BP targets. Focus on the OF next. Pearson and Kay are the only two pitchers with a chance of being on the roster some time in 2020 who should be groomed purely as starters. Roark and Anderson are probably locks for the rotation as well. That would make everyone from Thornton and Shoemaker down BP candidates. I don't see a scenario where Borucki isn't a BP arm now in April, given how the current roster is constructed.
tazsub3 Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Is that because everyone is racist? with racism increasing south of the border for sure. It is unfair to say everyone, as luckily not everyone is, but there surely an noticeable increase I have seen many established corporates wanting to return to canada for their kids to be brought up back home/

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Still a bad outfield but cant fix all issues in one offseason. Won't remain static. Hernandez in particular could emerge to a solid above average regular.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Give us Betances now! I do think a price trade might be doable. You can get the money right so it helps both teams (if BOS is as tight for cash as it sort of appesrs)
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Now that we got Ryu can we all stop pretending that Tanner Roark is serviceable?

You can get the money right so it helps both teams (if BOS is as tight for cash as it sort of appesrs) That type of trade, wouldn't Wil Myers be the better target? Padres have the stacked MiLB system Boston lacks. Plus, Myers is young and not a major injury risk like Price.
