Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Lol, I think Vladdy didn't want to have to pay Hazel's dry cleaning bill again.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 You obviously know nothing about Vlad lmao. He doesnt try to hit homers... has been said by so many people I figured a casual like you would understand. He wont be crushing homers left and right for a couple of years. He hits the ball hard and is a hitter...not a power hitter. He leads rookies or is close in hits at 20 years old. That is who he is right now until a few offseasons with the MLB club to enhance what he is...a really f***ing good hitter who doesnt get cookie cutter fastballs like Alonso, Soto, Acuna, Bichette, Tatis Lmao What?? Why would pitchers give the other guys cookie cutter fast balls but not Vlad?? Every single one of them is getting whatever the pitcher and coaches think will beat them. How does it make sense to keep giving cookie cutter fastballs to Alonso?? Or to anyone for that matter. Every guy is getting pitched tough.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Yeah I'm seriously baffled when people act shocked when others express disappointment in Vlad's numbers this year. It's like, yeah, he's 20 with a 110 wRC+ (or whatever it is), which is remarkable in a normal situation, but with his peers hitting the ground running at a similar age + expectations due to minor league performance, are some of you really surprised at the disappointment? Didn't projection models have him having a 5 WAR or something crazy like that before the season (forgot what it was)? Yes, Vlad is excellent for his age, and will likely be a star, but the narrative that we should be thrilled with his performance to date is ridiculous. It's not like no other 20 year old's or rookies are killing it right away. Regardless he will be fine long term. He's comparable to Miguel Cabrera at the same age, and is probably the only Blue Jays who has ever had any success at age 20. On the other hand it's just weird to see Alonso, Alvarez, Tatis, and even Bichette have a homerun rate 2 or 3 times as high... it's just kind of a bummer in this year of the homerun, Guerrero was mostly absent except for the home run contest.
goldbug103 Verified Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 It’s probably because hitting MLB pitching requires focus and study. Vlad is probably too busy eating tacos and nachos to take things seriously.

DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Another cookie hanger to Bo...glad he finally started hitting again. He was slumping bad when he was not getting the center cut pitches Your a mental case. Bash Bo cause you love Vlad.

Vlad is probably too busy eating tacos and nachos to take things seriously. Well I doubt that. His problems probably come down to ground ball rate and plate discipline. His out of zone swing percentage seems higher than most of the elite hitters (maybe like low 30s, when you'd like to see it at mid 20s)... I think the number of pitches he sees "out of zone" is as high as anyone. However to get better pitches to his he needs to stop swinging out of zone... easier said then done. I'm sure he doesn't want to hit 3 ground balls a game.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Author Posted September 14, 2019 Yeah, I definitely expected more. You never know with prospects though and just looking at Vladdy, there was some redflags with his body type. I still think all the hype didn't help... I mean it was ridiculous. Even a lot of bright baseball minds on this forum were predicting 4-5 war in his debut season. Sure, as you mentioned, some guys hit the ground running, but it's certainly not the norm. Maybe because Steamer had him projected there??? Hindsight and all that... https://www.fangraphs.com/projections.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&type=steamer&team=0&lg=all&players=0&sort=22,d
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Vlad was (rightly) hyped as our best prospect ever and people hoped he'd hit the ground running like Bo, Acuna, Soto etc have done. So in that context it's not out of line to be a bit disappointed. But it's not like he's looked out of his depth and with a bit more experience he should secure his place as one of the elite bats in the league. There remain questions over his weight, and his near term future at 3B. But him not setting the world on fire might even be the incentive he needs to lose some weight in order to maximise his talents.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Vlad has the home run derby curse its not permanent He had a hot streak after the homerun derby and looked like he would take off. There was a moment or two where he was close to Alvarez in counting stats, and trailing Alvarez in batting average .310 to .285 or something, and still had an outside shot at Rookie of the year if he finished hot, and Alvarez slumped... instead it went the other way, and he's had a brutal 3 week stretch of ground balls and looking bad swinging at out of zone sliders. On one hand it's just 3 weeks... on the other it's so frustrating watchin him... for a week he'll hitting 120 mph line drive singles, and 450 foot homers to center then 3 weeks of ground balls. At least he's getting the ball in the air the last few days... well except for the 9th inning last night.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Yordan Alvarez is what we taught vlad would be What do the hitting gurus think?? Can you make him swing less?? How do you get his launch angle up?? His maximum hit velocity is as good as anyones. How do you stop him from swinging as much, not only swinging and missing, but hitting grounders on questionable pitches. Go up there. Take more pitches, take some walks, don't waste the at bat tapping an out of zone pitch to the 3rd basemen...

On the other hand, Alonso is 24, Alvarez is 22, and Bichette is 21. Tatis is 20, but he's also showing some red flags offensively and is being boosted significantly by a very high BABIP. Being an above-average hitter in MLB at 20 is still extremely rare. It just seems less impressive now because we saw two HoF track players explode onto the scene at 20 last year, and then to a lesser extent Tatis this year. We all expected Vlad to produce like Soto with the bat, but that was probably a case of expectations that were a bit too high. His performance might seem disappointing, but it's actually indicative of a guy who's going to mash at the MLB level. Where I think he's actually been disappointing is everywhere else. People were wondering out loud if his defense could approach league average and if maybe he was pretty quick given his size. Well, the defense is terrible, and he runs the bases like Wilson Ramos and Jose Abreu. There's no benefit of the doubt now that we've seen 500 PA of Vlad at his current size. He's going to absolutely bleed value on the bases, and at 3B if he stays there. He's too fat, and it hurts his value. If he doesn't lose weight, the most probable outcome looks a lot like what David Ortiz did most years, or what Nelson Cruz has done recently. Outside chance that the bat gets to Miguel Cabrera levels and he contends for MVPs, but you can't really expect that kind of progression.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Tellez was apparently taken out of last night's game because he wasn't running hard. Good on Montoyo. Put Tellez in the doghouse so Shatkins doesn't count on him to be a regular next season. Charlie thinking long term.

I thought that was it, Tellez hit into the shift and barely run, and I thought where's the effort. Good.
