Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 You know, if we're willing to spend a bit without sacrificing prospect capital, signing Edwin and Ryu and trading for Price would give us a pretty decent looking team. Sign Ryu Trade for Price and Benitendi Sign Betances Sign Edwin We are a playoff team Not gonna happen...but it's not a huge leap to actually accomplish if they wanted to

The Red Sox had a better roster last year than ours would be with those additions and didn't make the playoffs. We'd still have a lot riding on a high injury risk rotation, an unproven young core, and a dodgy outfield.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 The more competition for Ryu, the less the chances are for signing him. Not sure about Price, the Red Sox would have to eat up a lot of the deal to make it worthwhile.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 If the Red Sox are eating half that money sign me up for David Price. I’m sure he would love to get out of Boston and he seemed to enjoy his time in Toronto.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Yeah with Price it's all about how much money they eat. He makes 32 mil a year for the next 3 seasons. How much would he get on the open market?

How much would he get on the open market? A much lower AAV but Bumgarner has tons of red flags and got 5/85 so Price would get decent money. Probably would get the Keuchel contract actually.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Mlbtr: The Blue Jays and Red Sox are discussing a deal that would send veteran starter David Price to Toronto, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. While Rosenthal is quick to note that an official move isn’t close yet, it’s nonetheless notable that Price is in play for a Blue Jays team that has made abundantly clear its desire to upgrade the starting rotation. The Athletic: The three months David Price spent with the Blue Jays in 2015 were among the most enjoyable of his career. The Jays are in a different place now, with a different front office. Price, 34, is more expensive and less durable. But he again might prove a solution for Toronto, which is exploring all avenues to improve its starting pitching. The signing of free-agent left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu remains one possibility for the Jays, but the team also is talking to the Red Sox about a trade for Price, according to major-league sources. A deal only will come to fruition if the clubs agree on how much the Red Sox will pay of the $96 million remaining in the final three years of Price’s contract. Such an agreement is not close at this time, and the Red Sox are talking to other clubs about Price and examining different options as well, sources said. Trading Price would help the Red Sox get closer to their stated goal of falling below the $208 million luxury-tax threshold in 2020.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Payroll sitting at approx 122M now for 2020 after signing Shaw and Ryu according to MLBTR/Roster Resource Does rhat sound right?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Payroll sitting at approx 122M now for 2020 after signing Shaw and Ryu according to MLBTR/Roster Resource Does rhat sound right? Includes $14M for Tulo and $12.4M for "Other pre-arbitration players" which seems high? Also assumes the Ryu $80M is equally split over 4 years. Hopefully this is front loaded.

Saw that, but it includes an estimate 15 millions in benefits. They are not usually included in payroll numbers. Without that number it is 106 million. Also think their 12.4 million for 7 pre-arb players is kinda high but I am not sure.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2019 Author Posted December 23, 2019 Jays are at 38 on the 40-man and none of Yamaguchi, Shaw, and Ryu have been made official. Is this finally Urena's time?

One would think he'd be first on the chopping block. One would also HOPE that he'd be first on the chopping block.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 I wonder how receptive Castellanos would be to a mostly full time DH role. He's a proven middle of the order bat and still young, yet the defensive limitations might keep him rather affordable.

If EE is 1 year $10M, I'd probably be good with Castellanos at 3 years $45M or something. I'd pay more to get a young hitter entering his prime years over the risk that EE falls off a cliff. But if it takes 5 years $100M for Castellanos - I'd rather sign EE and then go year by year ala Ortiz Keep in mind that EE was still a better hitter than Castellanos last year. Either way - I'm not super keen on signing guys with little to no defensive value or versatility. Still think Corey Dickerson should be targeted.

bzapple Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 I'd like to see a better backup shortstop in case Bichette gets injured. Iglesias or old friend Hech could be okay targets.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 I'd like to see a better backup shortstop in case Bichette gets injured. Iglesias or old friend Hech could be okay targets. Steamer has Espinal with a projected wRC+ 6 points lower than Iglesias and 1 point lower than Hech for 2020, I don't know enough about his D to answer this question myself, is the basically negligible difference in the bat offset by D that much? Also, I didn't notice this, but apparently Espinal played 101 innings in CF last year...
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 These would appear to be conflicting statements, sir. I guess. Dickerson isn't a massive hack in LF though. I believe his defense suffered last year due to a foot injury? But he was a positive in 2018 at least.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 I wonder if the recent moves might open up trading Giles for a similar service time position player rather than prospects, then signing Betances to close? Maybe something like Giles to the Dodgers for Joc and Chargois?

Maybe something like Giles to the Dodgers for Joc and Chargois? That'd be kinda a weird deal for the Jays to consider... Our bullpen is inarguably our weakest spot, dealing from there for a moderate upgrade to the OF for 1 year doesn't really do anything for me. Unless you see something in Chargois that I'm not seeing...

Unless you see something in Chargois that I'm not seeing... Well, you'd be replacing Giles with Betances, who might not even be a downgrade, and would probably sign with the promise of closing whereas he might not otherwise. You'd be getting Joc who is a 3 WAR outfielder and a plus defender in left/right, and an intriguing bullpen arm that throws upper 90s with a wicked slider.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 I don't see this as very appealing to the Dodgers They need the help in the pen, and this would accomplish that without adding payroll. It seems to me it fills the biggest need for both teams.
