Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 Who have the Jays signed since 1977 that's a prime time elite level player, in their prime...to a lengthy contract, for premium dollars? It's never happened. That's where the narrative stems from. The fact that there's no history showing that it's ever happened. You could argue Clemens...but he appeared to be on the decline when he was signed, and as soon as he had his resurgence he demanded to be moved. Now...I don't categorize Bumgarner as being in his prime...but I don't see him signing here anyway...I see him as someone going to a current championship contender. The Jays may have been in the running for someone like him if this was a 2015 type team, but no one of any significant impact is coming here right now. Clemens was signed 4 years $40M with a opt-out after year 2 (which he exercised - didn't demand his way out) BJ Ryan was in this prime, signed long term to huge money AJ Burnett Paul Molitor Russell Martin How many mega contracts did the Padres sign before Hosmer/Machado? I mean f*** man, most teams don't have a major track record of landing big name guys
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 More that three ace pitchers heading into their 30's would be willing to sign with a team that just lost 100 games or damn near close to it when they can sign with perennial contenders for the same money. There's a pretty large difference between the team not being 'in' on big name FA's and the big name FA's not wanting to sign here.... Also - there's very recent precedence of a big name guy signing with a s***** team with a good core of young prospects (Machado)
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 Can we just agree there is a non-zero chance the Jays sign a big name free agent this off season?

These three guys will have their pick of where they want to go.

Most of the "big name" teams are going to have difficulty fitting a $35M/year player into their budgets without getting luxury taxed to death...

SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 Who are you guys expecting they sign for SP? They almost assuredly won't be in on Cole, Bumgarner and Strasburg. I can see us attempting for Zack Wheeler but he's going to have plenty of options. I'm expecting some attempts at tier 2 guys, reclamation projects and the usual dumpster diving. Jhoulys Chacin Jake Odorizzi Michael Pineda Rick Porcello Michael Wacha Clay Buchholz re-signed I'd honestly be really okay with re-signing Buchholz. I mean I wouldn't rely on him, but getting him for $3M on a 1-year or something appeals to me. Unless he wants a longer term. 2-year, $4M AAV? Dunno.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 I like some of the names you listed. Cole Hamels might be a good target given his age. One year deal? I would be all over Rich Hill on a one year deal. Keuchel might be worth a gamble on a 2 or 3 year deal. Roark, Alex Wood, Kyle Gibson, Wade Miley are all interesting enough mid-level targets of varying talent levels. There are enough options that it would be unacceptable for them to only pursue guys like Nova, Cahill, Chacin, Buchholz. I 100% agree. But I would still try to get Buchholz signed. I have a good feeling about him for 2020.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 Can we just agree there is a non-zero chance the Jays sign a big name free agent this off season? So you're saying it's possible? That the chances are > 0%? Pretty fierce prediction.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 So you're saying it's possible? That the chances are > 0%? Pretty fierce prediction. Ya well its kinda in response to the guy that said the chance is zero, ok?

wamco Verified Member Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 Interested to see where payroll will land next season. Atkins of course can see we have several starting pitching slots to upgrade on. I count 5. I’d love to spend 80m on the rotation putting payroll up to about 140m. Buy a whole rotation with One or two players to 1 year deals. Give us a good chance to win every day this season and set us up for 2021. Spend 10m on a 1bman.
Ray Verified Member Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 It's actually absurd how little money with have committed for 2020. According to RosterResource, it's just shy of $30M. That's less than: - The Oakland Athletics - The Tampa Bay Rays - The Kansas City Royals - The Cleveland Indians - The Baltimore Orioles - The Arizona DBacks - The Cincinnati Reds In fact, the only teams with less committed money than us are the Twins, the Marlins, the Pirates, and the White Sox. Even with arbitration estimates for Giles and Shoemaker, I don't think we'll crack the $50M committed money mark. Assuming we have the same opening day payroll as last year, we'll likely have $60M-$70M to spend this offseason . We would have more than enough money to sign both Wheeler and Odorizzi at $15M a piece (or Cole at $30M), sign a decent 1B, and sign a couple cheap bullpen arms.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 Clemens was signed 4 years $40M with a opt-out after year 2 (which he exercised - didn't demand his way out) BJ Ryan was in this prime, signed long term to huge money AJ Burnett Paul Molitor Russell Martin How many mega contracts did the Padres sign before Hosmer/Machado? I mean f*** man, most teams don't have a major track record of landing big name guys That's pretty much it in a nutshell. I never said that the Jays were the only team that weren't going to land big name stars. But that's the point isn't it. You have your usual suspects that aren't afraid to go 8+ years and $150+M on players, and the rest...not so much. Could it theoretically happen? Sure it could. But I'm going to go with the math. It's highly unlikely.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 We need a steady outfielder thrown into the mix next season. Shed the likes of Fisher, McKinney and send Teo to Buffalo as depth. I wouldn't mind throwing a 3/24 at Nick Castellanos and see what happens. He's been reliable health wise and will give you a competitive at bat every time and we'd have him through ages 28-30. Play him in RF with Grichuk in CF and Gurriel in LF. Have a good defensive outfielder like Davis or Alford on the bench to come in and play CF in tight games and move Grichuk to RF. There's no reason not to field a half decent team next year with the payroll flexibility we'll have.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 That's pretty light, bruh. The annual might be a few million light but $24 million guaranteed could do it. I'd give him 3/30 regardless.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 No gruber he wasn't signed to a 1/10 deal, by the Cubs! Roflmao... That was his last arb year with the Tigers(hence the trade), and he's a FA next year.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Nah, lol... you're still way too light. IMO... he's in the 15 AAV area for the 3 years. He made 1/10 this year? 3/45 I think would be a bit high, but then again Grichuk got 5/50. 3/36 could do it.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 I don't know what to make of Castellanos. He's still bad defensively, but he has improved quite a bit this year. Ideally he'd probably fill a DH role and maybe play RF twice a week. Really hard to figure out what teams will pay for that. Maybe Seattle will sign him to play CF.

If his D is that bad, than Gruber's right at a 12 AAV. I recant my post. Yup, he's terrible, f*** that idea Gruber.

Castellanos has no defensive or baserunning value, poor K-BB%, and destroys the baseball when he makes contact. This is EXACTLY the kind of profile the front office targets except that he's also a good hitter.

keggy Verified Member Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 So you're saying he's a younger version of Kendrys Morales ? Front office favorites Smoak, Pearce, Gurriel, Drury, McKinney, Teoscar, and Grichuk all somewhat fit the profile in one way or another, but Morales is the most classic example of the type they like to take a flier on. This year they seem to be targeting speed and athleticism a bit more as well (Brito, Hansen, Fisher), so their internal valuations are probably evolving behind the scenes.
