I kind of want to like Drury and want him to work out. But you could make the case that not rostering McKinney, Urena, or Drury going forward would be a good idea. The first 2 should have been the ones leaving for free over Galvis.

No he isn't. McKinney is likely a bad 0-1 win player, with former prospect hype that you can dream on a 2 win season, Urena is almost certainly below replacement level and has no ceiling.

Lol, he really is, McKinney is awful.

If it was only a money thing that would be pointless. We have one of the lowest payroll commitments in the league next season already.

That'll change when we sign Cole and Odorizzi

Options and controllable

Smoak should not play after August 31st you could make the case he shouldn’t be playing right now. Maybe they are waiting for after players weekend or something. But his current presence is weird.

Might as well dump Smoak as well. How does the same thought process tell you to cut Galvis but keep Smoak? Put McKinney/Tellez/Drury there, who gives a f***.

We didn’t cut Galvis, he was claimed. That said, if no one wants Smoak on waivers then yes might as well DFA then release him.

Urena yes, and he probably is not on the Jays for much longer. But options and price are why those guys are on the Jays still, and Galvis isn't.

Options and controllable

I really hope one day we morph into one those organizations that values talent and quality over warm bodies in the future.

Both Urena and McKinney can be replaced anytime with waiver wire fodder.

I believe we are forgetting that Gurriel can play a not bad SS

It was pretty telling when they gave him absolutely no shot at Shortstop after his second base struggles. I doubt we ever see him the infield again unless its an emergency.

I'm confused with the people confused about this move. Galvis served no purpose on this team anymore and there was no market for him at the deadline.

I would actually like to see McKinney and Tellez start getting more at bats, they both started crushing after getting demoted. There's absolutely no reason a 29 year old backup SS should be getting DH at bats in a rebuilding season.

The current 2019 infield, not including C or 1B, looks something like:

2B - Biggio

3B - Guerrero

SS - Bichette

2B/3B - Drury

SS/2B - Urena

I'm pretty sure this move was made with an eye to the fact that Drury and Urena are both a) controllable and B) out of options next season. If the FO saw value in an external backup infielder, it's hard to imagine a better fit than the guy they just gave away for nothing.

You might be right but that's not a good sign for next year. I wouldn't even tender Drury. Dude is trash. Urena is even worse.

Gurriel should never wear an infielder's glove again. He played some of the worst 2B I've ever seen in the majors, and actually looks pretty good in the OF. Don't mess with a good thing.

I'm sure Drury and Gurriel can play it in a pinch if Bo is unavailable and Urena and Espinal in AAA.

Gurriel has played 46 games at SS.

Bichette is the SS going forward, but in event of Bichette in-game injury Gurriel should be available along with depth guys at Buffalo

Point is, Jays do not have to have a roster a backup SS when Bichette and Gurriel are active

Oh I agree. If it's up to me Drury is non-tendered in the offseason, McKinney and Tellez are optioned and serve as AAA injury backup, and Urena is DFA'd.

I agree with all this except for Tellez. I don’t see what we have to lose by dfa Smoak now and give Tellez 1B for the rest of this season and next.

An ok veteran 1B will be relatively easy to pick when we are more serious about competing if Tellez never adds anything to his raw power. I’d also keep Vlad at 1B next year though, your plan might involve him moving to 1B for 2020?

Dude has a career AAA wRC+ of like 65 over 600 PA, and projects at under 60 in the majors. He's not an MLB player.

It's probably just for 1/2 season or so anyway until Espinal is ready (he seems likely to fill that sort of super utility role to me), and unless pretty much everything goes right next year, we won't be a playoff team anyway. If by some miracle we are in it at the trade deadline, then prices we saw this year suggest we won't have any issue beefing up the team on the cheap.

"A front office can never be criticized for their decisions because they are professionals. Just relax. " - Orioles fan as their team signs Chris Davis.

Obviously Shatkins in making this move aren't doing anything in the ballpark of a Chris Davis signing. But the idea that we can't criticize front office decisions because we don't have the same information is completely inane. Front offices make bad decisions all the time. This one probably won't matter, but to me, it appears to be weak asset management.

You can't even make a credible argument that a front office makes poor decisions without an understanding of the information they had at the time of the decision. Poor results and poor decisions are 2 different things. Ever decision has a probability of poor results, no matter how good the decision is. s***ing on someone who made a good decision, but got unlucky with a poor result is incredibly shortsighted.

If Galvis told the FO he wasn't going to accept a backup role and wasn't going to work with the young infielders....would you still want to keep someone like that around just so they could give you 1.5 WAR over 650 PA's? We don't and probably will never know all the circumstances behind this, so just accept it for what it is.

It should be noted that a guy like Jose Iglesias, who is basically a carbon copy of who Freddy Galvis is as a player, will be a FA this offseason a year after signing a minor league contract. Maybe they think they can acquire a guy like him for nothing/half the price of Galvis and be no worse off. Not that I like us giving away Galvis, but this is clearly a money thing.

Exactly. Look at what infielders signed for in the off season. Galvis might be overpaid. I hate that a 2 win player at $5m is an overpay, but welcome to 2019-20 MLB.

The Jays might not get the same results, but I have no doubt they'll be able to get a decent utility infielder in free agency for less than what Galvis was going to get.

I've followed this team since the early 80's, I have never seen such gross incompetence from the GM office before. I thought JPR and Gord Ash were poor GM's, but I would give anything to have one of them over the boob that is turning the organization in to a joke. Not satisfied with merely being fleeced in trades, the clowns at the top now are giving away players literally.

They would have been better served to keep Galvis and move him to 1b, you would get better production than the disaster that is Smoak/Dreary

I'm surprised people want to non tender Drury. I'm not as big of a fan of his as Shatkins seems to be, but he can play multiple positions, won't cost much in Arb2, and he's still young enough that you can still dream on the bat. I would definitely tender him a contract.

Not that he was even close to it, but has the only shortstop that we have had that was elite Tony Fernandez? I know that Alex Gonzalez and Eddie Zoskey were highly thought of, but in our history we've only had one elite shortstop.
