When googling Kyle Johnson I had to go to the 4th page until I found anything baseball related.

Edit: Stupid Rosenthal spelled Johnston wrong.

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Cutter: 60 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Johnston boosted his Draft stock in the 2016 California Collegiate League, where he showcased the circuit's best arm and shut down the U.S. collegiate national team for six innings in a June start. He began his junior year as a starter before being asked to fill Texas' void at closer and cashing in on his first two save opportunities, but he subsequently lost command of the strike zone and returned to the rotation before going to the Nationals in the sixth round that June. He was used as a starter and reliever in his first full season, faring better in the latter role as he finished the year at Class A Advanced Potomac.

Johnston's fastball and slider both are viewed as plus pitches, giving him an ideal pairing for a long-term bullpen role. His heater registers in the low- to mid-90s, at times bumping higher, with arm-side run and late sinking action that nets him a lot of weakly-hit contact. His slider plays more like a cutter, sitting at 88-90 mph with darting action, and he also has a changeup that could become a serviceable pitch if he uses it more often.

There is a lot of effort in Johnston's inconsistent overhand delivery, and it in turn impedes his ability to throw strikes. But with two big league-caliber pitches, Johnston has the raw ingredients to become an effective reliever at the highest level.

Track Record: Part of the Nationals' heavy pitching class in the 2017 draft, Johnston signed for $226,100 after being selected in the 6th round. After a solid three-year career at Texas, Johnston posted a 3.43 ERA in 46.2 innings in the New York-Penn League last summer and progressed to high Class A Potomac in 2018.

Scouting Report: Johnston has always been lauded for his impressive fastball-slider combination, as both of the offerings grade out as plus pitches. His fastball features plenty of armside movement and sits in the low to mid-90s, with a hard, sharp slider that should be an out-pitch in the future. The knock on Johnston has always been his control, and he didn't take any steps forward in that area in 2018, walking 4.1 batters per nine innings in the South Atlantic League and 5.3 in the Carolina League.

The Future: The 6-foot righthander has been used as both a starter and reliever in his first two pro seasons, though he's performed much better in the latter role and could make a full transition to the bullpen soon, barring a step forward with a fringy changeup or with his strikethrowing.

This seems like a very good deal. Not putting up bad numbers as a starter but could be a great reliever.

The Phelps and Hudson signings worked out great. They provided solid innings, then got flipped for intriguing guys with 6 years of control. Successful dumpster diving!

Seems to have two plus pitches and isn't Rule 5 eligible until after next year. Big concern was his control but he appears to have improved on that this year. I'd like to see them move him to AA to find out more about him, 23 while in high A doesn't tell us much.
