For real though. The entire internet and media is in shambles because we didn't get a guy who is on a public top 100 list. Who honestly gives a s***? Look at it objectively and we got a great deal - two controllable pitchers, one of them with absolutely huge upside, and Kay fits in well with the group of Thornton, Borucki, Pannone, and Waguspack... between those 5 guys one is going to have some kind of success over the next year and a half.

SWR fits in well with the Manoah, Pearson, Pardinho group of future studs. We actually have a pipeline of talent now!

And it's not like re-signing Stroman after next season is off the table either.

I don’t know what you are smoking, but I think you’re the first person to suggest that it was a “great” deal (not just good, not just that the Jays won the trade, but a great deal) and also that there is any way in the world Stroman would choose to sign back here and work with Atkins again.

I guess it’s nice to see some positivity for once!

You can probably make the case that two of those players were, in context, approximately equal in value to Kay + SWR right now.

Not fair to say that SWR is better than all three. Mateo alone was probably more highly regarded than SWR is right now (whether or not that was justified or the industry agreed - who knows).

So you can say that Toronto's return is light by one piece... but Sonny Gray had 2 more years of control after 2017 so it's not a direct comparison.

By that token, doesn’t it make sense that we get one less piece because of that one less year of control?

I don’t know. The trade seems a little more even than I first thought the more I think about it. It’s still one piece away from being a great trade (Dominic Smith or David Peterson would’ve been nice), but as it stands, I think it’s pretty even going by recent years comps.

I do agree that I think this deal could’ve been matched on the day of the deadline, but we’ll see. They must be really really high on SWR and/or Kay.

It strikes me that the Shatkins trades tend to all be like this, they tend to get the guys they want and don't bother with the "filler" pieces. The Thornton trade is another one that seems the same, on paper the Jays should have gotten more, but they got what they wanted and didn't bother with that extra piece that sits in A ball unlikely to amount to anything.

I don't know if it's a sound strategy, but it seems to be their pattern since they've been here.

This deadline has been so fn slow. I thought it would be more active given the single deadline and close races in the NL. I guess there might be a flurry tomorrow

I think it’s an even deal. I wouldn’t characterize it as great tbh.

The people who legitimately believe we got fleeced or robbed are f***ing numpty’s though.

Haven't you read? Atkins ruined baseball and the trade deadline by giving Stro to the Mets. Teams now need to reference Todd's Top 150 prospect list to find trade candidates in the mid 50's. Oh and teams heard you have to wait until the last second to truly get the best value in trades, so just sit tight.

Sure wonder whether the Jays will be able to trade Giles now with his elbow issues. I'd assume if the receiving team can do a physical prior to the trade being penetrated, there would be no issues.

There's always medicals done before the trade is official.

Medicals are always done and all information is always exchanged. I don't think it's that big of a deal if he doesn't get dealt at the deadline.

Also don't think teams are backing away, seems more teams are shifting now to relief help cause they don't want to pay the SP price.

It's a great deal for sure, it's exactly what we needed. There's a crazy amount of groupthink going on here.

This return is pretty much exactly right on the money what most people were hoping to get - two top prospects. Does it matter if they aren't in BA top 100 right this second? One was on that list a month ago and the other will be on it in two months.

Regarding Stroman, money talks. As soon as he sees he isn't getting a 150M/5yr deal he will be willing to listen to the more sensible 70M/4yr deal (or whatever it is) that Atkins offers him if that's the best deal he can get.

I think it's hilarious how many Mets fans actually thought the Stroman trade was bad for them, but the best thing to come out of all of this was a post on the Mets subreddit titled "Live look at Brodie during trade season" with the following video:

I mean considering where they are at as a team, it's certainly not a good trade for them.

Yes, that was my unclear point. If Sonny Gray is the most comparable talent traded in recent years, Stroman should have returned significantly less due to less control.

Atkins obviously got sweaty palms and didn't want to lose SWR. That's what makes the return light.

Yeah, by Atkins' own admission this offer from the Mets was the first legitimate trade offer that they received. He decided to take it four days before the deadline because the other teams did not seem to have that level of interest.

But he could have lead the Mets along for a couple more days, played them off another team, and attempted to supplement the offer. That's the difference between getting Kay + SWR and getting Kay + SWR + some third, sort of interesting piece. The risk there is that the Mets turn elsewhere and nobody else matched Kay + SWR.

Meh.

Well.... not sure about that, lol.

Atkins is a mess. He's an idiot if he didn't think real contenders would also have real interest. He slots in as a #2 or 3 pitcher for every single contender.

The thing is we don't know the specifics behind the Mets offer. I heard that ownership was reluctant to move Syndergaard. Maybe in order to get full support, he told them that he'd try and get a player like Stroman, who has another year or control, then they can ship off Syndergaard and get a propsect haul. Maybe the Mets gave the Jays a deadline on the offer so it would give them time to work on a Syndergaard deal.

Meh, this means s*** all to me.

You hear this in every professional sport after a big trade it seems.

Maybe the Jays management & scouts see something in these 2 players that his team doesn't.

Brodie is probably the dummy they spoke to.

In the meantime, we should all speculate and form strong opinions about the whole situation and those involved based on little to no information. Same fault in our voting system.

It's easy to say - "I watched Moneyball - I know how GM negotiations work and Atkins should have played hardball more!"

Here's a question...if Atkin's played hardball and waited teams out....and nobody fell for it - and he either kept Stroman or dealt him for less....would you applaud him? or s*** all over him for not reading the market and taking the best deal? (that's under the assumption an extension wasn't going to happen). I suspect the vast majority would s***.

The trade is bad for the Mets because they should not be selling prospects. Unless they flip Stroman in the summer of course, but on the face of it, it’s classic lol Mets.

This kinda proves Shatkins is an incompetent Neanderthal.

These "other teams" can f*** off. They don't know the offers. From everything I read the Jays swung for the fences and asked for Lewis, Kiriloff, Garcia, etc. It's not Shitkins fault if none of the teams would budge on top propsects. It takes two teams to make a deal, and if they're offering s***, it's not the Jays fault for taking the best deal available.
