Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 What does that even mean? How can anyone even say that with any certainty? It's dumb, especially with it being a bad team anyway., Because he's a blue collar hard worker and many Canadians relate everything to hockey. And in hockey, the grit grinders are loved. The "heart and soul" guys. The guys that show that extra hustle will always receive extra love from Canadian fans... Whether it's warranted or not... Maybe it's not fair to lump just Canadians into that group but I'm pretty sure it's an accurate assessment. I've had more arguments over the past 24 hours about Pillar being moved than I can count. Casuals don't give a s*** about results and productivity... As long as their "favorites" are around, that's all they care about. They all need to be loaded into a cannon and fired into the sun.

Sportsmen that appear to graft and/or work hard are popular with casual fans in every sport. It’s not exclusive to hockey or to Canada. Many fans would give anything to be in the player’s place and appreciate that a player who works hard is doing everything for their team.

And that's fine and great. But irrational love for a player just because of hard work is silly.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 If you read between the lines when you listen to Atkins, and a degree to Shapiro; Especially this AM when Atkins was talking about the Acuna extension comp. One, Acuna had a bunch of ML ABs.. Vlad zero.. But, all the other stuff, Atkins says is basically PC stuff for saying yea, we think he can hit, but Acuna is a CF in good shape and Vlad is a fat body probably going to get fatter... There is a real concern with aspects of Vlad apart from his bat.. The weird thing is that by showing up at 327 lbs and getting injured because his back was to fat to rotate properly he gave the Jays an easy excuse to keep him down for at least 2 weeks and get the extra year. You'd think he'd come in at 227, hit the tar out of the ball, and force their hand.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 Haha, if being a sports fan was entirely rational then it’d be a very different world! Yup. But if you were to pick a team sport where logic would be most likely to shine through, you'd probably think baseball. Probably the most math based as our pertains to analysis. But ya, everything goes out the window when someone makes a diving catch and the media gives him the Superman moniker. Have you also noticed that 99% of women are the ones that are outraged. For dudes it's like 50/50.

EastCoaster Verified Member Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 Miggy didn't switch to 1B until his sixth season when he was in his mid 20's. Vlad is never going to be an elite 3B (and we're not going to see him play a year in the outfield like Miggy did) but I think everyone here would be happy if we managed to get 5 seasons of Vlad playing a passable 3B. Miggy didn't play 3rd base full time till his 3rd season with the Marlin at the beginning he mainly played outfield . He moved to 1 base when he was traded to the Tigers then moved back to play 3rd to make room for Price Fielder then back to 1 base with Fielder retiring. Vlad Guerrero jr is a big man listed at 6'2" 250 lbs it takes a lot more work to keep a big body agile and athletic. The fact that I don't like he's already shown a vulnerability to injury with this oblique strain possibly due to some conditioning early on his career. Vlad is possibly one the best hitters this game ever seen in longtime so why wouldn't the Blue Jays want to protect this kid from possible injury risk to insure him of a healthy longest producing career. Here 's the scouting report on him" At third base, Vlad’s no butcher, but he’s still average-at-best defensively. His offense will certainly cover that, but it is entirely likely that he will end up moving across the diamond or even to an outfield corner to utilize his arm. His quick feet and soft hands could be a big asset at first base." The scout clearly think Guerrero jr would best suited to play 1 base.

No one questions that Vlad will eventually be a 1B/DH, the question is when. An average 3B for 3-5 years would be a good to great outcome and the Front Office and coaches must believe they can get that out of him otherwise he wouldn't still be at 3B in the minors.

There's also the whole "keeping our star prospect/player happy" angle. He wants to play 3rd (apparently, who knows if that has changed). Obviously if it's damaging him physically, or he's completely brutal there ("average" is above "brutal" in the rankings, IIRC) you have a conversation with him about moving him around, but we're essentially building the team around this guy, so let's try to keep him happy.

Yeah I do think it sends the wrong message to him by putting him at 1B to begin his career without giving him a shot at sticking at 3B. Especially as he should have at least a year in the majors where it doesn't really matter too much if he sucks defensively, as we're not in contention, so he's got more time to improve at 3B. If we try it and it doesn't work, nevermind, we get an elite bat at 1B and Vlad gets to eat whatever the hell he wants for the next decade.

That will depend on his weight control because here what the front office said on that issue already" Blue Jays management believes Guerrero Jr. needs to be lighter to handle being an everyday third baseman at the MLB level." Now having said that he's showed at camp the heaviest that he's ever been in his career so obviously dieting isn't something he takes seriously if weight is an issue now at 20 things aren't going to get easier as he get older. That's why I believe moving to first base is the right move for him and the Jays for the protection of both parties involved sooner the better.

There's also health reason and injury risk no one can overlook his weight issues and that can only be problematic down the road the Blue Jays has to protect their players development the best way they can for the future. Guerrero jr started being an outfielder because of speed they moved to 3rd base so he already transition from one position to another so I doubt that he object moving to 1 base this kid just wants to play ball and be the best player he can be whether it be playing 3rd or 1st.

When he signed, one of the stated things he liked about the Jays was that they were going to let him play third. Now, I don't know what, if anything has changed since then, but that was something he wanted at the time.

IMO he’s been given a chance to play 3rd and opted to get fat instead of putting himself in the best position to handle 3B. If he gets moved to 1B it’s nobody’s fault but his own.

Yeah his weight when he signed he was listed at 200 lbs now he's 250 lbs and the Blue Jays already told him he needed to be lighter if he wanted to handle being an everyday 3rd baseman in the MLB. I think these were pretty self explanatory conditions given by the front office.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 The only positive comp I can think of is Kirby Puckett who was not exactly an underwear model but somehow played a really good CF. I see this going more the Prince Fielder route though😕😕
