You know exactly which one it is

I don't see why the Jays would spend $9m on Anderson almost immediately after the off season began if they were just going to cheap out the rest of the way. Gibson literally got $1m more AAV than the Jays will pay Anderson in 2020. My hope is that it means the Jays are aiming a lot higher in subsequent pickups. If it means Roark and Miley will round out the rest of the rotation, then that would be pretty damn disappointing.

Anderson: $9 million in 2020

Gibson: $10 million a year for three years

I read 2/30 earlier today, if it's 3/30 he likes Texas!

Again, he must love Texas!

I think it's pretty sad that people get excited over Kyle Gibson with his 1.44 WHIP and 32 years old getting a 3 year deal to take him to 35. He's what a 0 WAR player last year and that warrants a 3 year $30 million commitment. Sure 2018 he was good but he's not getting any younger.

Meh - just have Borucki start for league minimum. I am sure he can put up similar mediocrity.

Here's a plan - if you actually want to win some f-ing games acquire "quality"

When you want that heart operation do you want Hawkeye or Frank Burns operating on you (yeah a M.A.S.H. Reference) - seriously. Anderson makes sense - a 1 year stop gap until the kid(s) are ready.

Yeah I don't get it.

I mean I understand that people don't just look at ERA anymore but sometimes you need to just look at how many f***ing runs a guy gives up. Kyle Gibson has three seasons in the last five with ERAs near 5. Two good years in the last five and three nearly replacement level years. Chase Anderson is better (quote this).

I'll admit that earlier this offseason I thought Gibson had a better 2019 based on how people were talking about him.

A man of your talents using ERA? Really?

He's better than you think. Uptick in Ks past 2 years which coincides with a 2 year spike in FB velo. Very good GB% and not a ton of walks. Unlucky with BABIP, LOB% and HR/FB compared to career norms. I'm on mobile so I havent checked his statcast numbers so unless theres something there I'm not sure what's wrong with him. He did get nicked up toward the end of last year I guess? Or maybe they think he becomes a 6K/9 guy again as he gets older and his fastball velo declines?

He's not an ace or anything but at 3 for 30 he's not paid anywhere near one either.

I understand the narrative but it's only a 1 tick bump in velocity, he has always given up a lot of hits, and the increased HR rate paralleled what happened league wide (to some extent) as did the K rate (to some extent). I didn't even think of the medical thing but IIRC it is a chronic issue. I'd just much rather have several other options at his level of the SP market. I would have thought 3/30 was fine but I don't think Toronto missed out at all. I legit think Chase Anderson might be better and it might not be close?

Dylan Bundy and his projected 5.7 mil salary is up for trade.

I think he offers as much as a guy like Gibson in the rotation, but I'm also intrigued by the idea of his excellent slider in the bullpen with a velocity bump for the fastball.

He was a 2.6 WAR player last year.

Bundy for Teoscar maybe? I'd be fine with letting him eat up some innings next year at reasonable cost. Maybe our catchers can help him and we can flip him at the deadline.

Plus, I really want to see Teoscar in another uniform.

Baseball Reference 4.84 ERA and 0.4 WAR. And a s***** WHIP. And he's not getting any better or younger.

Justin Bour is signing in Japan. Remember when he was in the home run derby a few years back in Miami and he got hot and was loving every minute of it? That was awesome. I loved it.

I haven't seen data on this, but it seems like more fringe guys are choosing Korea and Japan over MiLB deals this year.

I don't know if it's true either, but the old way of "making the big leagues" seems to be more of an illusion than ever.

Days gone: Players prove themselves in the upper minors, get a chance in the MLB, and if they stick they are big leaguers.

New era: MLB teams will use options liberally and most bench or platoon quality players are up and down for several years. Even when they are out of options teams have a strong preference for MiLB deals and are very shy about giving 25 man roster spots at guaranteed money to even big league veterans who are bench-level talents.

Just so much uncertainty for these kinds of dudes on the North American side. That's not even to mention the increased $$ across the Pacific for some, and how it is increasingly normal to go over there.

They make better money playing in Japan and Korea instead of signing just a MiLB deal. Also, they get to put up Playstation numbers overseas for a couple of years. If some players/pitchers have success after 2-3 years, they come back on an MLB teams radar and likely could end up getting a decent MLB contract. Better to make several millions and showcase themselves in Japan and Korea rather than signing a minor league contract and playing in Triple A all season. Better opportunities in Japan & Korea for those AAAA type of guys in their late 20's/early 30's and if they have success, MLB teams will come calling after 2 or 3 years. Look at Eric Thames, Merrill Kelly, Miles Mikolas, Chris Martin as examples.

Excellent post. You're right.

Once guys get to arb 3 especially they're at high risk of being non tendered if they haven't proven to be good everyday major league players. And even if they are the projected salary is often too high to be palatable.

Teams know they can sign vets for 1 year deals on the cheap to fill in their bench and bullpen. They now seem to mostly prefer this rather than over pay a guy in his arb 3 year to stay on for one more year.

It's also another reason that smart low budget teams like the Ray's usually trade their good players away during their arb 2 year. Bigger return on the trade and more salary savings.

I'm surprised this didn't get more attention here considering Sam Dyson's history with the Jays.

Guy allegedly threw a box with his cat in it at his girlfriend. Already knew the guy was a punkass after the 2015 series, but jesus christ.

I have issues with this being called domestic violence. Sounds like Dyson threw a cardboard box with a cat in it. You can throw a cat across a room and it will land on its feet and not get hurt, depending on how you throw it. Based on that post, I would imagine that the cat's "mommy" was being an idiot in some way. Its not illegal to break a box. #MeowToo

Yes but you cant throw a cat which is in a box across the room and have it not get hurt.. also an mlb pitcher throwing a 13 pound box (considering the average weight of a cat) at his wife is definitely assault.

Come on dude this might be your worst post ever
