Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 Because Alex Bregman is a rich ****. I have no problem with players being paid what they deserve...so ya...pay him based on what he did last season. HOWEVER...when you have a s*** season, you also get paid accordingly. Doubt the PA is willing to do that though. There's give and take...and if he doesn't like that system then he can go pound salt somewhere.

Get paid 600k the next year because you had an injury riddled awful season and were on the DL half the year? They would never go for this, and you can't have it both ways. These baseball contracts are guaranteed. There's massive value in that for these players.

I proposed this idea last night on the podcast, but we didn't dissect it or go into great detail about it (yet). But my idea was basically this to a tee, and would be based on WAR.

But my idea was basically this to a tee, and would be based on WAR. The players would never go for that. They would argue there is no one authoritative WAR, they would argue that WAR doesn't accurately represent their abilities, they would argue that their WAR was intentionally suppressed by the team to reduce salary... many many problems.

Oh, I agree. It wasn't very well thought out.

TB would immediately figure out how to position guys on the field to tank the UZR of arb-eligible players without hurting team performance.

Then have all salaries go to arbitration. Each side presents its arguments, use whatever stats/metrics/fan feedback you want. Arbitrator decides what your salary is for next season. Only 1 year contracts going forward. Bregman wants fairness...that's fairness. Performance based pay.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 But honestly for every Bregman there’s at least a few Ellsburys, Chris Davis, Pujols, Hayward, etc on the other end of the spectrum.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 How about giving players who are in pre-arbitration a direct cut of their merchandise sales? It would also encourage them to promote themselves more, which MLB wants.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 So no more August waiver trades? Surprised that's being implemented for this season.

There are only probably a handful of players who could probably make more on a % of merchandise vs having a fixed amount negotiated in their salary.

That's an interesting idea from Abom. Having incentive to promote yourself, your team and the league could butter both sides of the bread. Now there will be guys who just aren't that popular, ugly, aren't big social media guys etc. But it's a dog eat dog world where only the strong survive. There would also be an influx of middle aged dudes crying about what d-bags these guys must be to take selfies and promote themselves on Instagram because they're jealous of the chicks they bang and the cars they drive.

The capitalist in me agrees with you.. However, the last part in the Major League Baseball Players Association is also spelled UNION, so I don't see it ever happening.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 Man the NFL offseason is off to a great start. NBA has a pretty good one too. MLB used to be the premier offseason league for its Hotstove Season but I think the other leagues are catching up, especially when you factor in that the other leagues have much more marketable drafts.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 Its always funny when someone equates unions as non-capitalism. Unions are basically people collectively bargaining to negotiate a better contract. It's capitalism at work!

He's talking capitalism in a "laissez-faire, robber baron" kinda way, unfettered capitalism where the goal is for the 5 highest paid people at any company to make 10,000x more than the 6th highest paid person.

MLB could come up with its own version of Twitter/Instagram/Reddit hybrid. Revenues shared based on amount of page views for each player with the league taking its cut. Could even let fans participate in the profits (or prizes like free tix/merch). Right now the way things are with social media they're giving away revenues to Twitter for free and that asshat platform doesn't deserve it. It probably wouldn't be that much of a revenue driver on its own but it would be a way to try to connect to new/casual/younger fans without tinkering with the game itself.
