One extra bench player sounds good to me

9 man bullpen does not

This sounds like it will accomplish both

I'm fine with adding the 26th player, but there's no reason to limit the number of pitchers you can carry as that will have implications for 2 way players. Just do something like pitchers have to face at least 3 batters before they can be replaced. If they come out of the game due to injury, they can't pitch again for at least 5 days or something to prevent it being abused. A pitcher starting the game can't pitch again for at least 2 days, unless a game goes into extra innings.

Good for rich teams that will have an extra platoon position. s***** for poor teams that will use the 26 for a slap hitting speedster. Goes still around?

It's just going to expedite the shift towards 4-5 inning starts followed by a parade of specialist relievers. I also don't care to see bigger benches. Having someone come off the bench to pinch hit because he has the platoon advantage isn't interesting to me.

This is a way to get more MLB players earning service time and MLB salaries, but it actually makes the quality of the product worse from the fans' perspective.

Mlb and players association nearing an agreement to increase rosters to 26 players in 2020 while at the same time limiting rhe number of pitchers you can carry

I'm assuming two-way players like Ohtani and McKay would be loopholes stashed under the position players side, or would you have to declare your potential pitchers for each given game?

Actually rather than speedster would it make more sense to fill the 26 with a guy with extreme splits

It's going to be a reliever. Instead of 12-man pitching staffs with more and more teams rostering 13, every team will have a 13-man pitching staff with some rostering 14. Benches will still be the standard C/INF/OF/OF.

What if they were to go further and expand it to something like 27, but the final two slots were bonus roster spots? Basically players could be placed there and would be ineligible to enter the game, but would continue to earn service time and be on the big league roster? Different players could be placed there every game if desired. Maybe make a rule that pitchers can't be placed there unless they've gone 2 days without pitching, or 4 days if they've thrown more than 50 pitches in their last outing.

It would allow teams to be creative (and deal with minor injuries easier rather than having continual shuttles to the minors), but without adding lots of extra in-game moves.

Thoughts on the Leclerc extension? Could be pretty nice value if he establishes himself as a closer over the next couple seasons, and make him a more valuable trade chip.

I still hate it. I think the game is at its most interesting when a series is more than just 3 completely independent games. There's an appeal to two teams playing each other 3 or 4 times in a row, and one of those teams gaining an advantage for the whole series if they knock the other team's starter out in the first inning of game 1. There's an appeal to the idea that you need your starters to get you deep enough that you don't exhaust the bullpen.

I can't think of a single aspect of expanded rosters that makes things more interesting from the fans' perspective. An endless supply of fungible two-pitch relievers that throw 95 just isn't interesting.

Lol, Steven Wright got busted for taking growth hormone. That's gotta be about the dumbest thing ever for a knuckleballer.

Was just going to post this, what a meathead.

Agreed and it will just continue to slow the game down as rosters can carry more and more specialists who sub in and out of the game quickly.

In his defense, he probably took it to recover from his reoccurring injuries, not to get a performance enhancement. Very stupid regardless lol.

No warm up pitches when a reliever enters the game. Just pitch

Luciano got knocked around a bit. What are his chances of making the roster?

As a long reliever, pretty good. He's pitched quite well up until today.

That was my initial assumption, like you said, not very wise.

It was one game, in ST. It did not help when the next pitcher, Morimando gave up a 2B down the RF corner clearing the bases.

Well of course, but it seemed like his chances were always described as "long shot" any time I read about him. Helpful to know that the next guy did him no favors, thanks. I hope he makes it I just haven't been paying much attention to spring so far so I'm curious is all.

He's more of a long shot to survive the whole season. He probably breaks camp with the Jays.

Maybe not as remote as people think.

Giles - lock

Tepera - lock

Norris - lock

Biagini - 1 option

Phelps - won't be ready

Axford - not a lock

Mayza - 2 options

Paulino - 1 option

Barnes - not on 40

Guerra - not on 40

So right now they could break with Axford, two of Mayza/Biagini/Paulino, and Luciano.

There's really nothing to gain by returning Luciano. And there's nothing to lose by sending Mayza to Buffalo.

I assume they'll put Borucki in AAA then. And Richard in the rotation.

Otherwise, if Borucki is in the big league rotation then Richard is probably a long man which squeezes another spot but it doesn't seem like they are going to do that.

So yeah it seems like Luciano will make the team so long as he doesn't s*** the bed from here on out. And assuming the 60-day DL stints for Phelps and Merryweather work out appropriately then Axford will make it too.

Unless he's hot garbage for the rest of the spring, I assume he breaks camp with the team. Does he survive the year? I think that depends on if the team shows more promise than expected. It's not really hard to carry one mop-up reliever in a wasted year.

I'm confused. I thought they said it will be a 26 man roster, while they will limit the # of pitchers you carry on the roster. What's wrong with that? It will just return positional bench players back to what it was in the early 2000's before teams started stacking their bullpens with more arms.
