Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 I don’t remember it that way, someone started a Elvis stats prediction thread and a lot of the comments were along the lines of predicting he wouldn’t make it out of spring training. Elvis making the team and sticking all season as a teenage pitcher who has never appeared above rookie ball would be unprecedented. It really depends on what they see in him. If they really think he had a high ceiling, then hanging on to him in a nothing season, and giving him limited innings, while he gets Major League instruction all season, could actually work out.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 So, earlier on this radio broadcast, the Vancouver Canadians announcer guy was talking about meeting Vladdy for the first time... He mentioned his weight at 270. That's the first I've hear of a number that high, that can't be accurate, can it? I would say accurate given the pictures I saw from this Spring Training. I would guess he is 30 or 40 lbs heavier than last year. Take a look at his Montreal homerun last year, vs. some of his spring trainining at bats this year. Serious obesity issue and if it leads to another injury we won't see him this year.

He is really being overmatched.

Well it’s clear that if Elvis wasn’t a rule 5 pick he’d be no where near the 25 man. So even if he manages to stick around, he’s almost certainly not going to be on the 25 man next year. Normally you’d expect him to up to 3 or 4 years away if he makes it at all. IMO he has a better chance of developing by having a more normal career progression, gaining experience and working on his skills in the minors. Unfortunately that means it’s probably not going to be with the Jays. Most rule 5 picks fail anyway, but the ones that do work are normally players who are older, more experienced, and just take their chance. It’s very rare that a rule 5 pick sucks but still sticks all year and then pays off in later seasons.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 Everyone thought I was crazy for even asking if Luciano was going to make the team but at this point it has to be a big question mark. Sending him back and freeing up a 40 man spot has to be pretty tempting for the FO right now. At the time, that was his first implosion of the spring, he hasn't looked good since. It'll be interesting to see what way they go here.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 If axford and tepera are on the IL to open the season, I could see him making the squad even with his atrocious spring. They don't have to put Axford on the IL(not on 40), but yeah, it's likely then.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 Teoscar on his Spring... By Gregor Chisholm @gregorMLB March 20, 2019 DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Teoscar Hernandez has become one of the breakout stars at this year's Spring Training, and he has been able to find success in a pretty surprising way: increased plate discipline. Hernandez was known as a free swinger earlier in his career and there will always be an element of that to his game, but he also has started to learn how to work a count. Pitches that he used to chase, Hernandez now watches pass outside the zone for a ball. The change has resulted in six walks in 39 at-bats to go along with two home runs, a double, eight RBIs and a .410 average. He has all but officially guaranteed himself a significant amount of playing time in left field to start the year. "I'm going out there with a plan," Hernandez said. "I'm going to try to keep going into the season with the same plan, and just try to keep doing what I'm doing this spring, try to control myself to not get too anxious. When the season starts, keep working on the things that aren't working here and try to keep improving my skills." Hernandez typically posted high on-base percentages throughout his Minor League career, but his discipline suffered once he arrived in the Majors. In 26 games for the Blue Jays as a September callup in 2017, Hernandez walked just once and some of those bad habits carried into the following year, with a .302 on-base percentage that was impacted by a paltry .239 average. Patience has been what Hernandez has been preaching the most this spring, and it's a hard skill set to learn. A lot of players either have it, or they don't. Hernandez is trying to prove it's possible to make some simple changes and reap the rewards. "It came with experience," Hernandez said. "Obviously I have a couple of years now in baseball. I got my first full one, not full one but we can say complete season last year. They gave me a lot of experience, especially with the guys who were here the year before in 2017."

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 Looks like Knebel is out with elbow *problems*. Hader is probably going to get a lot of work in the first part of the season.
