LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 Pillar is a better player; he can stay healthy. Grichuk can't stay healthy Pillar only played 18 more games than Grichuk last season and still had a slightly lower WAR. Steamer also projects Grichuk to be half a win better this season. I'd argue he's our best
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 Almost seems like due to the surpiseness of the Vlad injury that it was kind of fabricated or exaggerated to get by with the service time issue imo

Key22 Verified Member Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 Vlad is a tubbo. Basically, Prince Fielder 2.0. Big bat first baseman. That's okay and all but he better mash at a 1.000 OPS or meh.

I'd argue he's our best Last 4 season: Pillar: 2.5 fWAR Grichuk: 2.2 fWAR Grichuk is more talented, but Pillar is the man who has been in the field free of injuries.

Sorry I thought your argument was who is our best OF right now, not in the past? You're right Pillar has been better over the past 4 years, as 4 years ago in his prime he put up a 3.7 fWAR season. However, I think with their age and skill set it is pretty clear Grichuk is the more valuable player right now and moving forward. I'd even be willing to make an fWAR wager for this season injuries included if you're interested.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 People on social media saying the Jays are probably happy that Vlad got hurt to avoid any service time issues don't make any sense. The Jays were going to keep Vlad down until late April regardless. They don't give a damn about optics (which is a good thing in this city). I'd rather Vlad be healthy and be kept down for service time reasons than to suffer another injury (after missing time last year). Even if it may not be considered serious, the guy is 20 with weight issues. I'm not going to celebrate a damn injury.

It gives them a built in excuse if the Players Association decides to bitch and moan. No, they wouldn't really have a case anyway, but not having to deal with them or their complaining is a win.
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 I'd have to agree with glory in that the avoiding minor headache the FO would get from twitter bitching and an unwinnable grievance doesn't really offset the durability concerns from our fat prized possession

An injury is never the preferred outcome. And really, it's a moot point cause Atkins already came out right at the start and said he's not a ML player right now. Had he just shut up and said, 'we'll use Spring Training to evaluate Vladdy' then there would be zero heat on him. But since he already said it, the injury means nothing...

You said if not for that statement he would have had "zero heat on him." The not major league ready line cost him some PR points but did not change the dial on the frying pan at all. MLBPA was already monitoring the situation

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 (edited) That's why I'm looking forward to attending many games in Buffalo this year. I'll be able to see the likes of Rowdy, Bo, Biggio, Vladdy(for awhile) and possibly Pearson for the low,low price of $10 US. Plus I can have one of those delicious Sahlen hotdogs and a beer for under 10 bucks. Love the minor leagues. That actually sounds really good! The hot-dog, the cheap beer, the stadium. I tried last year to catch a Bisons game when I was in Toronto and the Buffalo area. However it was the IL All-Star Break when I was around. I NEVER in a million years thought I would say that living in Buffalo sounds really good this summer Edited March 11, 2019 by Carlos Danger

It's fun to watch MLB debuts, but nobody is buying tickets to watch a bunch of prospects get completely overmatched at the major league level. Everyone's excited about Alford now, but when he has a wRC+ of 75 in mid-April nobody is going to be happy that the team punted Pillar to make room for a replacement level MLB player. Let these guys develop at AAA and kick the door down.

Let these guys develop at AAA and kick the door down. The September team was much more fun to watch with those guys in the line-up, and the team did better than prior in the year with the "veterans". I fully understand the "mirage" that September baseball creates.. However, a lot of that was negated, since a majority of our games were against teams jockeying for first place in the AL East or battling for a wild card spot/top spot in their division. We are not talking switching out a Josh Donaldson for a rook. We are talking about Pillar, Morales, Travis would be in the discussion if healthy.. Baseball is entertainment. We do not have much shot in 2019 with either line-up.. So, we might as well have one more entertaining..
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 Save your money then, nobody is making you spend your money at the Rogers Centre. Fine for you to say. However, Rogers is running a business. I as a consumer in the demo that they savor, have no issue spending my money to see exciting guys, even with the knowledge that we might lose. However, that chance is not made less by a bunch of boring left overs that I have no desire to see. If I knew in advance the line-up of the games, no way I buy tickets to see Morales, Travis play s*** D etc.. I will pay to see Tellez hit, Alford, run throw and hit.. Bo, Biggio and ACEucki pitch.

Fine for you to say. However, Shatkins are running a baseball club. They're not going to take guys like Tellez, Bo, Biggio out of camp because of reasons I shouldn't need to explain to you. For the first time in a long time it appears that this club might have a bit of depth and everyone wants to nuke it and become the Baltimore Orioles this year. These motherf***ers will get their opportunity if they prove they've mastered the minors and are pounding down the door to the bigs. And no, Rogers doesn't give a s*** if Carlos Danger comes to one of the 81 games. I promise you you're nothing more than a fart in the wind to them. A piss in the ocean if you will.

Well, I understand and agree with Biggio.. I think Tellez would stick on the ML team now, I think Bichette could use a few months in AAA, but doesn't need the whole year (or until September). I also understand Rogers doesn't know or care about the Danger family and one game is nothing. However, I don't think many casuals are looking at anyone on this team to go see except for Vlad whenever he gets here.. If guys like me who are pretty dedicated baseball guys feel this way, I am sure it is not only me who feels the same.
