BTS Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 Are there any international players left that are worth signing with this year’s pool money?
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 Not sure why would we trade him, I understand we have a surplus there but he’s a good young player. We needed to clear a 40-man spot, so it was him, Pompey, or Davis getting the boot. Getting 500k is a great return given the circumstances if there’s anyone worth signing.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 I might be off base but isn’t that a pretty big amount of intl money for a fringe big league outfielder who doesn’t really do anything well? Unless I’m underrating Smith Jr. Either way good move. Gaining a 40 man spot plus international dough is sweet.

Good young player...you mean a corner outfielder with average speed and forgettable power, who can't play CF? So a guy who has no real place here, and is a 4th outfielder type anyway? Really?

He's really not a good young player at all. Average hitter at best that doesn't provide anything with baserunning or defense from a corner, and isn't young enough to care about a potential breakout. He's barely above replacement level at best.

There are still two players left unsigned from BA's Top 50: 34. Fernando Villalobos, C 45. Jose Bonilla, SS https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/where-the-top-50-mlb-international-prospects-have-agreed-to-sign/
Ehjays Verified Member Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 Geezus the O's actually gave us $500k in international bonus money for him. Can you carry over money at year end?? This is the third trade the Orioles have done with their International Spending in the last few weeks

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 Do we know that it's 2018 international money that the Jays traded for or are they setting themselves up for July 2nd?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 We need some Spats reports I don't think he's there yet. IIRC, he said Mid-March and was going to stay further into September.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 Do we know that it's 2018 international money that the Jays traded for or are they setting themselves up for July 2nd? I've asked around on twitter but nobody seems to know. That's a lot of money if it's for 2019 J2.
Todd Verified Member Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 The guy is right you can not carry money over.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 Ok, I never really had an issue with shifts and all that, and maybe I'm getting into "get off my lawn" territory, but I kinda miss the game when everyone played their position and relievers were not spammed as much as they are, etc. Good that the Jays are doing it, Gibby was probably too old school to implement all of this stuff and we need to stay ahead of the curve, but there's still some old school in me, I guess. I agree. There’s a reason why basketball doesn’t let you park some giant in front of the rim, it’s not within the spirit of the game. I embrace a lot of the forward thinking in baseball, but at some point the game has a purity to it that I don’t want to see disrupted. Having four players acting as infielders should be a rule, not a suggestion. Meh. I find defensive shifts to be an interesting novelty, though I get that the novelty is wearing off from their greater use. The shortstop position was originally in the shallow infield in the 19th century so if anything they are returning back to baseball's routes with this particular shift. Agreed about the relievers. Also, Manute Bol. The reason why it doesn't happen in the NBA anymore is that no team can afford to have an 8 foot tall 180 pound non-athlete with no offensive skill on the court just for 5 blocks a game. A dude that size with offensive skill would absolutely be used for that purpose within the 3 second violation rule.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 He was recently DFA'd. I guess that changes my perspective on him... But in general my sense of him was a young guy that looks like he can hit the ball. Hitting/power are the hardest tools to find so that makes him valuable. If the team decided to DFA him then getting something out of nothing is clearly a win.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 We finally got a good look at Elvis Luciano today. Notes: - Sat 96/97 on the stadium gun - Fastball has a bit of run - He was just a thrower with the FB; really had no idea where it was going although he did incidentally paint one for a K - Showed no feel for offspeed pitches at all - One strikeout on a hanging breaking ball - Gave up two homers on what appeared to be really bad changeups or cement mixer sliders - Mickey Moniak sucks

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 Where did he say thats what he expected? It should be reasonably expected he's not going to "stick." Like, chances are, he's going to suck.

Call me crazy but id still prob let him make the team.
tercet Verified Member Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 Anyone have an idea of all of the pitches Alford has hit HRs over the last few days? The 2 ones today were on mistake sliders, but not middle middle hangers.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 Love the line-up today. Would like to see more of Biggio on D. But at least he is in the line- up. *However, the fact Pompey is not in there and Fields is?? Pompey must be made of glass..

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 So Vladdy is missing 3 weeks with a left oblique strain. Sounds about right.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 Is he considered on the ML IL? If so, does it have service time implications? There would be no implications other than a convenient excuse to keep him down for the requisite number of weeks
