King Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 We're dealing with a GM who took on Carlos Satanas $20M salary and almost near bust prospect JP Crawford for Jean Segura, who has averaged 4.3 WAR the last 3 seasons. And threw in a decent reliever in James Pazos to boot. Maybe that package doesn't get it done, but I bet there's a permutation of a deal where we can get Haniger by not giving up any elite prospects. JP Crawford is not near a bust, he did well in 2017, and had injury issues throughout 2018 He's not a bust yet, but he was borderline. He's definitely over hyped. He was ranked like a top 20 prospect the last couple of years and I don't think he'll have the hitting to be a mlber. He's 23, need to give him 2-3 more years before throwing around the bust label. Jim owns JP Crawford in a fantasy league. Any time he shows interest in a non-Jays prospect, that's why so don't expect him to be rational. I don't think he does. I wouldn't call him a bust yet either, he's well on his way, though. Get a clue, please. Thanks.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 Crawford is a swing change guy which is DiPoto's M.O. (like Haniger and that dude from TB, Fraley). I don't think he's a bust until you see what he does this year. Haniger was a good hitter in the minors, though. Crawford hasn't really had much sustained success at the plate at any point in his career.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2018 Posted December 5, 2018 Rosenthal said we're getting calls on Stroman/Sanchez and that we will listen on anyone who is 2 years or less away from FA. Dumn. Get better results or swallow it.

Ray Verified Member Posted December 5, 2018 Posted December 5, 2018 When's the last time we had this much pitching depth in the upper minors? - Sean Reid-Foley - TJ Zeuch - Trent Thorton - Julian Merryweather - Thomas Pannone - David Paulino - Hector Perez - Jordan Romano (if he doesn't get Rule 5'd) Not to mention Pearson may move quickly if he shows promise. Tons of upside in those names.

Tons of upside in those names. "Pitching depth" can be such a euphemism. A lot of those prospects have serious warts and/or are probably just relievers. In all likelihood, out of this crop Toronto will get 1 back-end or mid-rotation SP, a few decent RP, and the rest will be replacement level or busts. (this isn't really a criticism or anything directed at you, Ray. Just a general thought about the term)

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2018 Posted December 5, 2018 I was really disappointed when Paulino didn't get any opportunities as a starter at the end of 2018. His pitch mix is perfect for a starting pitcher and is wasted in the bullpen.

I'm a little more optimistic on those names, but I agree in that not every one of them will pan out obviously. Even getting 1 mid rotation starter and 1-2 good bullpen arms will go a long way into filling holes on the major league roster. By upside I just meant they have more potential on paper than the Mike Hauschilds' and Nick Tepesch's that we end up signing to MiLB deals. They're unknown quantities and young, so maybe it's a little easier to get excited about them than 28 year old minor league veterans even though they may not pan out.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2018 Posted December 5, 2018 Would love to see these two get dealt along with Pillar.

His pitch mix is perfect for a starting pitcher and is wasted in the bullpen. I think most likely given his situation with the Astros - he barely pitched for them this season - and prior injury history they just wanted to be safe with him at the end of this season and just get a few looks in. Next year they'll likely have him try out as a starter in Spring Training, should hopefully motivate him as it'll be a competition with a bunch of our other young depth starters rather than just gifting the spot to him.

So unless I'm missing something, he's had a bone bruise, a PED suspension, and a single shoulder injury. That isn't enough of a reason to send a promising young starter to the bullpen in my opinion. We're not talking about multiple nagging injuries or anything.

Good enough reasons?

I will add that your post is incredibly racist. POC people in baseball deal with enough intersectional and post-colonialism racism and stereotypics already, and then you just casually white-wash a POC person's age and control in the most racist way. All latino pitchers are wild eh? All latino players are older than their listed ages, eh? Pathetic. Delete your account and acknowledge your privilege and make reparations immediately.
