No, they never said that. Unless by "they said that" you mean "the media and Twitterverse speculated on".
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Merryweather is probably worth a heck of a lot more than a compensation pick, if he returns to pre-injury form.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 This is perhaps the most lopsided (at the time) Blue Jays trade that I have ever seen. That first Happ deal is up there as well. The FO did an absolutely horrible job with this.right from the start.

Oh noes, we got a guy projected to be a decent middle of the rotation starter instead of a draft pick that will turn into an org guy in 5 years!!

The Jays traded 4 weeks of an injured Donaldson (more like 2-3 weeks by the time he comes off the DL) who hasn't played in the bigs since May. The fact that they got anyone who might become a decent big leaguer is pretty good.

Obviously I don't think that's a reasonable projection at all based on injury history, age, and lack of performance. He would almost certainly be on the roster bubble at the end of the season for the Indians. He's similar to Sam Gaviglio at the same age and that's not considering the TJS .

Second, prove a comp pick is worth objectively more than Merryweather because that's the only other alternative unless you're living in a dreamworld that he would have accepted a QO, or signed some kind of extension.

That first Happ deal is up there as well. The FO did an absolutely horrible job with this.right from the start. It's two weeks of an injured Josh Donaldson dude, of course it's going to look lopsided. At least we got something out of him, this season was the worst case scenario for the front office and they tried to salvage anything they could out of it. You know what's a lopsided deal, Noah Syndergaard + Travis d'Arnaud for a f***ing 40 year old knuckleballer.

Even if what you said is true, Sam Gaviglio would be a pretty decent get out of a compensation pick that most likely would have flamed out within a few years.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 No question it is disappointing to end up with Merryweather for Donaldson in general. If you told me this a year ago, I would have called you crazy, but circumstances change. They didn't trade him before the season started so they left themselves wide open for this scenario to play out like it did. They made the best out of a bad situation though.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 I will donate $100 to the Radio Scouts podcast if Merryweather does not out-fWAR Billy McKinney in 2019.

You can use that tedious defense for any trade and it's no more convincing in this instance than it usually is. Nearly every single playoff team expressed interest and why wouldn't they? He's as much of a playoff difference maker as anyone traded this year, including Machado. There is more than enough time to get him healthy Despite all of that interest, we get a player with the same profile as many guys who pass through waivers and also pay much of JD's salary. If we were only getting extreme lowball offers (which almost certainly isn't the case) then we should have just kept him and offered the QO, a win-win situation. If we wanted Merryweather that badly, it's unlikely that the Indians were keeping him on their 40 man. We could have had him for very little.

He was traded to Cleveland over a game of golf between Shapiro, Atkins, Chris Antonetti, and Mike Chernoff. Much laughter and glass-clinking ensued. It's a conspiracy!

I'm rarely critical of the FO and being dissatisfied with the way they handled the situation is far from a conspiracy theory.

I don't know man, I like what I've read on him, sounds much more promising in value than a 75-80 comp pick, as others have alluded to. I'm pretty sure our FO has much better information their privy to, over you and I, lol. Is he rule 5 eligible, or you think he isn't even worth a spot on the 40 man? You're stat scouting, he seems fine to me, with the reports and numbers, actually. Josh wasn't taking a QO, and I don't think the Jays wanted to take that risk. A better return is better, that's how she goes by'. https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/8526-Donaldson-Aug-31-Trade-Thread?p=1298103&viewfull=1#post1298103 https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/8526-Donaldson-Aug-31-Trade-Thread?p=1298090&viewfull=1#post1298090 Edited September 5, 2018 by Spanky99

Merryweather's ratios and xFIP are pretty strong and always have been. He essentially had a bad ERA in 2017 - poor performance! I must have missed the part where Sam Gaviglio suddenly throws mid 90s, t97 The only valid criticism is the recent TJS, which obviously does cut his value down.

Looking for Updates on his TJS and when he is expected to start throwing or if he will be ready to pitch next year? Have you heard anything
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Looking for Updates on his TJS and when he is expected to start throwing or if he will be ready to pitch next year? Have you heard anything All I know is his TJS was March 9, 2018. I'm assuming he won't be ready at the start of the year but will probably be in rehab mode at some point during ST.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Likely back in game action sometime in July... that's if they even decide to promote him. I think a return sometime in May would be my optimistic/uneducated projection. That's a full 12 months of recovery and then 8+ weeks of rehab/extended ST, which sounds about right to me barring any setbacks. Obviously no two recoveries are exactly alike, but I believe I read that the D'Backs were hopefully Taijuan would be back in their rotation within about 13 months of his TJ in late April.

Yes, depends on the recovery, anywhere from 12 to 18 months is the norm, sometimes longer.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Yes, depends on the recovery, anywhere from 12 to 18 months is the norm, sometimes longer. So roughly any time between May, 2020 or never.

xposbrad Verified Member Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 He'll be 27 in a month, how has he performed at the MLB level since he has all these great 'peripherals' ?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 There isn't much info on this guy. The peripherals do look good. Why is he so old though without having ever made an MLB appearance?
