Atkins on Tim & Sid said that they know the player and they didn't clear waivers, they were claimed. So it can't be Merryweather? He's on the DL and cannot be put on waivers no?

He's not on the DL but he's not active. I'm not 100% on the rule but I thought the player has to be healthy to be put on waivers, and Merryweather won't be healthy for a while.

If Atkins said that then either it is someone else or Merryweather could in fact be put on waivers and was claimed.

If Atkins said that then either it someone else or Merryweather could in fact be put over waivers and was claimed.

Watching his interview with Sweaty Arash made me think he was describing a position player not a back of the rotation starter.

Yeah, I thought the same as the entire hoopla with JD being 'injured/sore calf' last week made his waiver fuzzy. Because the player has to be healthy / rehab assignment before MLB would consider them waiver eligible?

The only player whose numbers might suggest potentially being an "impact player" (which is how I think Atkins described the ptbnl) down the road is Yandy, but they'd have to fix his s***** GB rate. I guess Chang, Mercado, and Allen are possibilities as well.

Atkins said they cant get much better via trade at position players. Their goal has been pitchers, they know that is where we are weak. I would wager 9 out of 10 it is a pitcher.

He didn't say the player was claimed, he said the player was on the 40 man and did not clear waivers. That could still be Merryweather since Cleveland couldn't put him on waivers.

You're right! I f***ed up. "Did not clear waivers" is the quote. I took that as = claimed. For those interested in it, start at 1:02:49 when Sid asks the question: https://www.sportsnet.ca/590/tim-and-sid

Such an odd way of saying it, but I guess that is GM talk.

Yeah hearing the actual clip is still sounds like Merryweather is the guy so nothing has changed. I guess we just have to wait and see.

Yeah, I think it pretty much has to be Anderson, Merryweather, or maybe even Ben Taylor. Given they hinted strongly that it's a player that fits well with our AA and AAA guys, and that I'm not sure Taylor is an exciting enough relief prospect for it to be him, Merryweather is really the only guy that makes sense. I guess it could be Plutko, but he seems more like shuttle fodder to me.

It's interesting that in Atkins interview yesterday with Tim and Sid (I just listened to it now), he repeatedly stressed that the door was not closed on Donaldson returning.

meh - that's just GM talk (as is the couldn't pass thru waivers v. was claimed talk). You can't expect him to say "nah - I highly doubt that jackass is interested in re-signing here" or "we have no interest in bringing JD back at any cost"

Not from their side maybe

But from Donaldson's side??? Meh. Can't see it.

Maybe, but he could have mentioned it once in passing and deflected the rest as normal. He really went out of his way to make the point, several times. I'm not saying it's going to happen (probably a very low chance), but between Donaldson's comments on loving Toronto and wanting to be part of the future, and Atkins stressing the possibility, it paints a very different picture than a few days ago.

Speaking of which - why hasn't Donaldson delivered on his promise to spill the beans?

Donaldson isn't coming back to play on turf when his body is breaking down already. He gone.

good, doesnt really fit with the Jays. spend the money on something else (pitching)

I suppose he doesn’t want to start a slanging match and then have a reputation as disruptive when he’s entering free agency.

Then why the hell would he suggest it in the first place? Maybe his PR guy got to him before he could run his mouth.

The season isn't even over yet. I'm expecting that he'll say some s*** in the dead of winter when no one is thinking about baseball.

He mentions it above... "not the right time"

I just finally watched that interview. It seemed like he almost choked up when he was talking about moving on from Toronto and now having to shift his focus to the Indians. I mean, I'd be sad too if I had to live in Cleveland, but I think that reaction was about Toronto and the Blue Jays specifically.

Yeah, very genuine.
