Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Does acting like a 13 year old make you feel better? Wat?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Well I need to meet up with you *******s eventually. I spend more time with you all then my own girlfriend it seems. Same GF? She was gorgeous, along with your sister(no offence)?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 People like you are the type that keep me going, pop up once a week to troll and don't seem to understand baseball much. Listen, I don't doubt, ignore his ability to hit baseballs hard, and beat up bad pitchers/mistake pitches. But Teoscar is a flawed hitter, he is a free swinger that more then likely wont succeed long term. The problem is with stats like his bb, k, swinging strike. Tons of hitters have come up and had short-term success like him. Major league pitchers adjust and simply won't give him mistake pitches to hit (omg look at the last 3 weeks). In the history of baseball, hitters similiar to Teoscar pretty much all end up the same way. Sure Teoscar could take giant leaps, improve his bb, cut his k and swstr, but the odds are against that. Teoscar has been a pretty bad hitter over the last 3 weeks. I don't think he will be that bad and he isn't as good as his 2018 stats line. He will probably end up somewhere in the middle as I stated earlier in this thread with some help from BTS (Adam Duvall, Hunter Renfroe, etc). I've been wrong plenty of times (arencibia, mills, snider, ruiz, sanchez) and right plenty of times over the last 10 years on this forum & djf. If you want to bash me sure, np, but just have a valid argument plz which you don't have right now. How do I not have a valid arguement? The only better hitters by expected wOBA are: Betts Freeman Harper Trout Votto JDM JD Martinez is a player who doesn't walk much and strikes out over 25% of the time. Now I'm not saying he's JDM or even a top 15 Hitter but he's not some crap hitter you make him out to be. The "only hits bad pitching" is a terrible take. Every good hitter beats up on bad pitching... He's homered off Severino, Gray and Faria this year hardly AAA pitchers. Lots of guys strike out but when you hit the ball as hard as he does and do it to all fields, that'll play.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Same GF? She was gorgeous, along with your sister(no offence)? None taken! Get it all the time haha. New gf these days. Next time I come up I'll hit you and a few other up and maybe we can catch a game.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 1.4 WAR in 231 PA's as a Blue Jay. That's something I can support in-spite of his obvious flaws. I'm probably most disappointed in his defense. I thought he'd become above average when moved to the corner, but he looks lost at times.

Yeah some of the scouting reports said he could play a passable CF and a good corner. Doesn't seem to be the case.

You have a semi valid argument, but your sticking your head in the sand and avoiding the major red flags bb/k/swstr. Just assuming someone will overcome these stats because he is "young" is what you and many people are guilty of. I was too back 10 yrs ago.. (Ruiz, Arencibia, Emaus, Mills, Rzep, Snider, etc)

Do you look at the obvious changes in batted ball on heat maps, if you actually looked into said player you'd realize? Anyhow this is old hat, shalom!

Tercet trolls with the best of them (not that I care, his betting habits are amusing enough) but when he gets some egg on his face he then says everyone is trolling him.

(Ruiz, Arencibia, Emaus, Mills, Rzep, Snider, etc) You do know xwOBA takes into account BB/K rates? If you hit the ball as hard as he does and with the right launch angle then he can be successful with a bad BB/K ratio which is what the leader board shows. I'd rather have a guy who mashes and strikes out than some slap hitting Ben Revere. Lets not compare him him to Randy Ruiz and JPA FFS... Maybe he's taking PEDs and that's why hard hit rate is so high but his swing looks really good anecdotally. He's able to drive the inside fastball to dead centre which is really tough to do.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Tee Oscar's ranks, out of all qualified hitters: K% (lowest to highest; good to bad) 123/168 BB% (highest to lowest; good to bad) 121/168 SwStr% (lowest to highest; good to bad) 161/168 How much do these things matter? I summed z-scored for those three stats for all qualified hitters, with the bigger positive sum meaning that the player has a worse cumulative z-score. Here is the top 30 (the worst 30 at these things). Obviously this is stupid because using SwStr and K% mostly just double counts the one skill.... 5.58 Lewis Brinson 5.12 Joey Gallo 4.71 Carlos Gomez 4.48 Javier Baez 4.04 Ian Desmond 3.98 Rafael Devers 3.97 Michael A. Taylor 3.86 JaCoby Jones 3.68 Chris Davis 3.65 Yoenis Cespedes 3.64 Kole Calhoun 3.53 Matt Olson 3.43 Scott Kingery 3.41 Giancarlo Stanton 3.30 Amed Rosario 3.23 Brandon Crawford 3.11 Matt Kemp 3.03 Khris Davis 2.90 Teoscar Hernandez (19th) 2.79 Adam Jones 2.75 J.D. Martinez 2.67 Domingo Santana 2.66 Yoan Moncada 2.62 Marcell Ozuna 2.59 Eddie Rosario 2.53 Nicholas Castellanos 2.44 Derek Dietrich 2.43 Cody Bellinger 2.17 Paul DeJong 2.12 Justin Upton It's hard to really glean much from the list and Teoscar's placement on it. Some of the players are good most years because they simply crush baseballs. Some or good but not consistently, because of whiff issues and lack of walks. Some just are not good. I think the context is worth noting though. Guys like Castellanos and Eddie Rosario are decent players but really just average(ish) regulars, not stars. Teoscar needs to continue hitting the ball really hard to be a good regular, because the defense doesn't seem like an asset and it's hard to imagine the K and BB skills really improving significantly. The good news is that his hard hit rates have been elite in 2017 and 2018 so the JD Martinez ceiling is definitely achievable. For fun, here are the "best" 20 from the z-scores, in reverse order. Most of these players are good or great, but a few of them aren't. The holy trinity of hitting really is Walks, Whiffs, and Barrels. Some day Vlad Jr. will be the kind of that game. -2.70 Bryce Harper -2.75 Buster Posey -2.86 Freddie Freeman -2.86 Justin Bour -2.89 Ketel Marte -2.99 DJ LeMahieu -3.14 Carlos Santana -3.20 Michael Brantley -3.25 Brett Gardner -3.27 Jose Martinez -3.46 Mookie Betts -3.68 Joey Votto -3.93 Jesse Winker -4.18 Nick Markakis -4.35 Mike Trout -4.39 Andrelton Simmons -4.47 Denard Span -4.66 Alex Bregman -4.75 Jose Ramirez -4.82 Joe Mauer
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Sorry everyone I couldn't be here instantly to debate, was out picking up my first new car (finally no more ttc!). But anyways, Teoscar beat up on a bad pitcher, congrats. I guess no one noticed how terrible he has been for the last 3~ weeks. I guess this will be the pattern of this thread for the next couple months. Congrats dude! It feels awesome to be able to go anywhere you want, whenever you want.
