burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Or trade Pillar play Cain in CF and have Teoscar Hernandez play RF. That would be stupid. You would be spending way more money and lose all of the value gained by getting Cain by playing Hernandez. Pillar isn't going to get much back in a trade given how many OFers are on the market.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 IMO Cain isn't happening anymore. We've got about $15 million left or so and here is how we are set up. LF- Granderson/Pearce RF- Hernandez #5 SP- Biagini Cain alone would probably take up the remaining funds we have left. I expect that they'd rather use most of those funds on a SP and kick Biagini to the swingman role. Lance Lynn...

Continue to look at low cost adds.

MlbTR predicted 2/16 for him, which is reasonable.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 One thing that is concerning with Granderson is how slow has gotten. 2nd slowest CF according to Statcast last year at 26.6 Feet/Second equal to Steve Pearce in terms of footspeed. I know speed isn't everything but given he's going to be a year older I can't see him being a good enough backup for CF.

Fiddlehead Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Do we really think Cain is considering the Jays? I think Granderson is the OF they’ll sign and they believe he gets them through the year.

Teoscar would be a better backup CF than Granderson (who also has no arm). Given that Pillar plays a high number of games and that we have Alford in AAA in case of a Pillar injury I think Teoscar could fill in for 10 games spread across the course of the season.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 ^ If/when further OF improvement is needed, hopefully Alford can bring that by season's end. Yeah Alford and Pompey provide OF depth from AAA. Gurriel possibly too. DSJ and Harold Ramirez are lottery tickets.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Anyone think Cobb is a target? Could pay him basically all of our remaining $15M. Would vastly improve the rotation and would be a tasty trade piece if he stays healthy enough to shake the 'injury' prone label at any time during his contract. I figured he'd be too expensive, but there is a lot of 14M per year type estimates out there, and 4 years wouldn't be too bad a term.

There isn't single pitcher signed into 2019, so they can absorb the risk of a multi-year deal on a mid-rotation type.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 to be fair Dinger, Diaz is projected as a .5 WAR player over less than 200 PA's and Goins got 460PA's last year. I do agree 2 is a stretch to bank on, but I could see a 1.5 WAR swing as a reasonable assumption if he gets enough playing time (Goins at -.5 WAR, Diaz at +1 WAR) I just rounded up because I'm a Diaz fanboy

Now that McCarthy is in ATL and I'm sure they just took him as a salary dump, I'd love to nab him. Shorter term, same risk, a lot less money.

He was rumoured to have turned down three years $42m from the Cubs, but if no one is going to offer him a higher AAV then maybe the extra year would entice him to sign.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 It seems like FA prices are a bit down this year as well. Now might be as good of a time as any to invest in a multi-year deal for a pitcher.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Cain might not cost that much with how the market is playing out. We might be able to nab him for $14M-$15M over 4 years. We'd then have to be okay with Biagini as the in house option for 5th starter or trade for a cheap 5th starter. And then also be okay with the bullpen the way it is now. An outfield of Pillar in CF, Cain in RF, and Granderson/Pearce in LF is actually pretty good. I'm comfortable with that.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 I'm certainly not advocating that they should've brought back Bautista, but what do you think are the chances that Joey Bats signs somewhere for the same or less than Grandy and outperforms him in WAR?

Likely on the former, unlikely on the latter, IMO.

I'd definitely bet on Granderson but the projections are probably somewhat close enough that I wouldn't be surprised if Bautista had a 30% chance or so of out WARing Granderson next year.

As much as I loved Joey Bats time in TO, the last couple of years he really seemed to decline, especially last year. I'd love to see a resurgence from him but I think he's done. His bat speed seemed slower, his OBP went down, and he doesn't seem to be able to play the OF anymore. I can't really see him bouncing back, but I hope he does. I think Grandy will turn out to be the better player this coming season, assuming they both are healthy.

Jose had a higher exit velocity than Granderson last year. They are the same age. Jose takes care of his body extremely well. I hope they both have good season. If I was betting, I would bet on Jose to bounce back and have a better year than Granderson, but I think both could be slightly above average hitters.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 It's not about the exit velocity with Jose. When he connects he still hits bombs. It's simply that he doesn't have the bat speed anymore.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 According to fangraphs dot com and some other articles I've read, Bautista's batspeed is still good but it's no longer elite. His main problem is that his excellent contact skills (which were at or above league average which is great for a power hitter) have fallen off a cliff. His swing is also designed for a ton of loft and with the decreased exit velocity he hits a bunch of pop flies. Unless he was playing hurt and we see a bounce back from being healthy or some other adjustment he makes he's cooked. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/is-this-the-end-for-jose-bautista/
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Just looked up some numbers for Bautista: K rate 2015 - 15.9% 2016 - 19.9% 2017 - 24.8% Walk rate 2015 - 16.5% 2016 - 16.8% 2017 - 12.2% Contact % 2015 - 80.9% 2016 - 80.2% 2017 - 73.3% Swinging strike % 2015 - 7.5% 2016 - 7.2% 2017 - 10.9% Something definitely happened in 2017, either eye problems or he just lost enough bat speed that he can no longer catch up to fastballs.
AGL_91 Verified Member Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 The only argument one can make for Batista, is the connection the kids have with him still. JD and EE were the better players, but Bats was the icon and is the reason many kids are playing minor baseball and wanted to go to the games. It’s going to be weird going to the games and not seeing kids dressed up with the Jose beards
