Spoonovic Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 1 Year deal worth $5 million for a OFer who had 2.1 fWAR last season.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Not bad given the price is $5M, but I'm hoping he's more of a depth guy rather than the starting RF.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Perfect! Timing is interesting. I have to think maybe we were in on Cutch, and then this was plan B.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 1 WAR for 5M in a spot we have precious few options. Pretty easy to see him being worth 2 WAR (has the last 3 seasons). Great value sign and someone who will be easy to move at the deadline if we are out considering his amazing clubhouse reputation.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 5 mil for him is less than I expected.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Wow not bad at all! And he’s all character too, every team he leaves he’s had a positive impact in the clubhouse!

Yeah, $5M is a steal, and palatable even if Grandy suddenly falls off an age cliff. He could pretty easily provide $10-15M in surplus value this season.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 No risk there, good signing
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 He's old as dirt but has still been a pretty productive player the last few years. I like him as a platoon bat and barely any risk at 1/5 Million.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Decent, don't mind this move at all.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 good move, a guy that has trade deadline value
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Not a bad move....hopefully if he is a starting OF we use some money on a SP
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 This has been a very solid offseason. Nothing flashy, but nice low risk additions.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Solid signing. When the Jays are out of the race they can flip him for a prospect.
Ace Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Pretty good value, can't complain.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Wow, nice deal. He needs a platoon mate though, and Zeke ain't it. Still, for $5m? Good clubhouse guy and still productive with the bat. Nicely done Shatkins.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Why the hell did they tender Zeke a contract? Such a waste of almost 2 million. And he's a AAA player at this point.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Nice move if it means we are cutting Zeke and saving his 2 mil, can we do that? There is some rule about paying a portion to arbitration eligible players right?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Solid platoon option with maybe some starter upside, good value signing. This shouldn't take us out of the running for Cain.
souvlaki Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Trying to like this as a fan who wants to win not save the ownership money. I just don't see our outfield being any good. Hopefully more additions to come.

Low risk short term additions. Try and compete this year, sell off contracts if we don't to start the 'soft rebuild'.
BobTheJaysFan Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Not a huge fan just given his age. But for $5m it’s alright.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Wow, nice deal. He needs a platoon mate though, and Zeke ain't it. Still, for $5m? Good clubhouse guy and still productive with the bat. Nicely done Shatkins. As of right now, he's Pearce's platoon partner in LF. Decent move as Granderson is still a plus defender.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Word is the Jays want another OF. So Grandy in RF, platoons with Pearce (who is now a bench player), the other OF they acquire plays LF, Zeke makes $2m off the bench because we can't have nice things, and Teoscar/Diaz start in Buffalo?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Why the hell did they tender Zeke a contract? Such a waste of almost 2 million. And he's a AAA player at this point. wRC+ of 123 vs. RHP last year. .310/.376/.448 (better than Granderson the past 2 years FWIW). He just needs to correct that defense. I kind of thing we're done. Granderson and Zeke will platoon with Pearce and Teoscar. I mean ideally we'd get another starting OFer and let Grandy platoon with Teoscar (and Teoscar could spell all OF positions) - but we still have Zeke and Pearce and they don't seem to be going anywhere. We're treading water folks - praying for all the stars to align.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 There are incentives for playing time in the deal as well, so the top end may be higher than 5 million, but either way it won't be so much more that it turns into a bad deal. Good signing with limited downside
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Nice move if it means we are cutting Zeke and saving his 2 mil, can we do that? There is some rule about paying a portion to arbitration eligible players right? zeke isn't the guy we need to move. We need to move Morales...but that might take a miracle.
