Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 lol... or Depth! Yeah one of the long relief guys who gets sent down for a fresh arm every time we burn them out in a blowout loss
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Buck and Shulman were just talking about the last time Sam Gavilio got a win and Buck says "that's an ongoing argument with analytics involved in baseball discounting the win. They say there's so many other factors that are involved, but when you look at the championship teams, their the ones that lead in starters wins every year" Jesus Buck - don't you think those championship teams probably create all those other factors that help their starters get wins? Could another meteor hit earth and take out the remaining dinosaurs?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Completely agree...but I still have a hard time with it - as in theory, you would think pitchers would "pitch around" a great hitter in a tight situation if the hitter behind him was significantly worse. I still pitch - and I do this......but the numbers don't support it. Anyone care to learn me? After Smoak's home run, Buck says "it's not an accident that Smoak is starting to hit because Morales is starting to hit and Morales is behind him" Well there you have it. That's all the proof one should need to know that lineup protection doesn't exist. IMO - we can't allow people like Buck to spew his nonsense in live TV. It's really bad for baseball to have this ******* on TV - he has a real impact on fans watching on TV and a lot of people believe what he says is true. It's as bad as some of the news outlets.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 What are everyone's thoughts on Hernandez for 2019? After his first hot week he's basically been a 90 wRC+ bat with horrendous D in the OF. I'm wondering if at best he's a platoon bat in LF with someone like McKinney or DSJ who you run while they're cheap and cut if they get expensive.

Yeah the defense really holds him back and the speed he displayed in the minors isn't translating. He's a platoon bat with McKinney in LF for me next year but he does have some upside due to his ability to smack the s*** out of the baseball. He's going to have to make some adjustments though.

His adjustments need to be centered around using his pull side too, he said the other day to Hazel he's worked on going away for the last year and a half, now everything is pounded that way. He needs to implement all fields, easier said than done, but he needs to work on it. Plus his D, hope they're sending him to winter ball. He needs many more reps out there.

Not good enough D to play LF and not good enough Bat to DH. Not even good against Lefties as a platoon guy. I'm fine with giving him playing time to see if he can improve cause he's not really blocking anyone but McKinney at this point.

He looks like a league average hitter with no baserunning value and horrific OF defense. And to this point he hasn't had any platoon split, so he might just be a bad player even is used in a platoon. He's also 26 in two months.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 I wouldn't mind playing him everyday when the team is trash, but he's not a piece on the 2020-25 Vlad teams. Unless his bat really takes off. His stat cast numbers seem to be good so maybe there is some upside. The D really hurts him though.

Yeah Hernandez needs to go..maybe he figures it out and becomes a late bloomer but his D is bad , which makes him hard to keep around.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Considering a s*** load of prospects don't pan out. I am still ecstatic at the return for Liriano. We could do a lot worse at DH in the short term. Even though Morales has gone ape s***.

tercet Verified Member Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Just give Pompey/Mckinney/alford some ABs in August/Sept. We've known what Teoscar was since August 2017, no point in giving him more ABs.

We've known what Teoscar was since August 2017, no point in giving him more ABs. Why waste at bats on all three of them. You were able to identify what Teoscar was over a year ago. I don't want to waste any more at bats on a guy who can't put up a .300 on base percentage. Enough looking at the numbers. It's a waste of time. We can accelerate the rebuild if we identify which of Pompey/McKinney/Alford is really a good player, and give that guy 600 at bats next year. Which one is it?? Any idiot can read the stats. Let's just identify which one is going to be good, and give the September at bats to that guy and get him ready for next year.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Now that I think about it, one of the scouting types on the board identified, presumably correctly, that McKinney is very comparable to Justin Upton. Assuming this is correct, it makes a lot of sense then, to just be done with it and commit to him.

We know Teoscar is, we probably know what McKinney/Alford/Pompey are, but just give them 150abs~ over the 6 weeks to confirm/deny some thoughts.

And unless your planning to sit Pillar and Grichuk as well you can't give all three 150 at bats between now and the end of the year. We identified what Teoscar was in August 2017, then wasted 550 plate appearances on him anyway, when we could of been developing guys who had more potential. Giving Alford, Pompey, and Mcknney 50 at bats each this year, then 100 next year is a complete waste. Identify who is the next Teoscar, and who has the most potential, and play the one with the who we think can best adjust to mlb pitching.
tpurewal97 Verified Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Jays should run a 6 man rotation in September with everyone healthy Stroman Sanchez Borucki Pannone Estrada Reid-Foley Make Gavigio the long-man out of the pen, and get a better look at younger guys like Pannone/Borucki/SRF while also limiting their overall load.
