Dude, with all due respect, Lawrie was NOT the centerpiece of the trade. Lawrie was a throw in Beane demanded because he needed someone to play 3rd.

Nolin and Graveman were rather expendable because of Toronto's depth on the mound. The Blue Jays have R.A. Dickey, Stroman, Mark Buehrle, Hutchison and J.A. Happ in their projected rotation. Sanchez and Norris also are core pieces of the future, and that didn't leave much long-term growth for either pitcher headed to Oakland.

Barreto is the top prospect in the deal going to Oakland. The 18-year-old was ranked the No. 2 prospect in the 2012 international free-agent class by MLB.com after experiencing a lot of success in Venezuela. He was recently named one of Toronto's Webster Award winners after hitting .311 with 33 extra-base hits and a .384 on-base percentage for low Class A Vancouver.

Can I use AIDs to describe Carlos Dangers and this message board? or is that also frowned upon these days?

Alright, time for me to white knight here.

#1: I've seen oodles of posters compare trades of all kinds to rape. Trape is a word used a lot here. Why this is suddenly a hotbutton issue is a real headscratcher. Carlos Danger here is using a metaphor; a graphic metaphor but obviously he's not advocating anal penetration. Holy f***, I know you're sensitive, Hurl, but try at least not to be disingenuous. Which leads to...

#2: Do you HONESTLY think he was using the wrong Bean on purpose or that maybe he forgot there's an e on the end of Oakland's pres? It's a real stretch to get offended over this.

You also said "so much wrong" and brought up a total of two things with only one being even arguably legitimate.

As for him being AIDS, I'm going to step up here and say that he's been a great addition to this board. I voted him nicest poster with 100% sincerity. The guy takes all this s*** and never lashes out. He appreciates the game differently, but oh well. Despite being more old school, he listens to the podcast religiously where John shits on old school thinkers constantly. If our goal is to have a board full of people who all think the exact same way, then by all means, let's dump him. I thought you guys wanted some diverse thought.

Honestly, you can call me whatever you want.. I will NOT use the report button. I might comeback at you. But I have thick skin and at the end of the day, this is a message board.. Not going to lose any sleep over it or complain to a Mod...

I only use the report button for spam.. I hate spam..

meh - that was just my weak attempt at a joke CD. my bad man. I have no issue with ya. Merry ho ho

I was just going to say, the Reds probably want a guy like Wood or Brock Stewart or Dennis Santana, and the Dodgers probably want to make space for Verdugo.

Also the fact that it's a garbage idea.

It is, but it's so far the only real legit way to combat the opener that I've come across.

Or you know, it literally doesn't matter when relievers pitch in the game?

Does this mean no Stroman to the Reds?

I really think Shatkins can get a nice return from them but now they might be out.

It does matter to some people though. I don’t like it.

Why would they be out on Stroman...they basically needed 4 SP

The Reds are f-ing dumb if they aren't getting prospects in the deal

I have to think if the Reds are doing this, in for a penny, in for a pound, AA circa 2015.. Expect more and trade deadline boo ya if they are anywhere close to a WC..

Maybe a little bit of an ode to what they have with Votto before he is old as dirt..

I am thinking they will try to flip Kemp somewhere.

They would have to take salary then... That is the only way they can trade a guy like him.. AA traded him and took on salary, (equal with Dodgers) then the Dodgers traded him and took Homer's salary... You might be right.. but I can only see that for positional exchange with a big salary.. To the Blue Jays for Martin ;)

I like the trade for the Reds. They pay a pretty low price for some useful players to bolster their roster and they can surely flip Puig and Wood for better prospects at the deadline.

So the Reds are trying the Jays 2013 approach

Giving up prospects outside of their top 10 for a pair of solid vets on expiring deals is hardly an all-in move for the Reds.

They got rid of Homer Bailey and added a very good starter in wood along with Puig and Kemp. You add some decent offense to a team that has Winkler, Gennett, Votto and Suarez. That lineup has pretty good length. They still need to add some pitching, but they have time, and they are rolling the dice because they don't have the depth to sustain a ton of injuries. If you never put your chips in the middle, you never have a chance to win.

The Reds are definitely a team I'll be cheering for. I always love the under dog. How do you not like the Morton signing by the Rays, speaking of underdogs. What a great signing.

This is a very good deal for Cincinnati:

out:

Jeter Downs

Josiah Gray

Homer Bailey (owed 28M for 1 year)

in:

Yasiel Puig (owed ~12M for 1 year)

Alex Wood (owed ~9M for 1 year)

Matt Kemp (owed 21.8M for 1 year)

7M

If you project Wood and Puig at around 2.5 wins each and Kemp and Bailey at around 0, they added 5 wins to their 2019 team at a total financial cost of about 8M. They do this at a cost of two guys likley in the 8-15 range of their prospect pool.

And that's not even considering the potential comp picks they get. If Puig and Wood are healthy, they likely receive QOs.

Trading two prospects for added 2019 wins doesn’t seem all that smart to me unless you think the reds can seriously contend.

At the beginning of camp last year it was reported that Kemp had dropped 40lbs. He put up 1.6 wins in 146 games. It's not unrealistic to believe Kemp could put up 1 to 2 wins next year as well.
