I would be pissed if the Jays were in Tampa's position right now. 14 games over .500, projected to win 89 games.....and 8.5 games out of a wild card spot. That's brutal. Good on TB for having a great season. Just the wrong year to have such a good one.

So the NL MVP has to be a starter right? None of the position players are lighting the world on fire and one of the best possible candidates in Machado will get the league-switch penalty. I can't see a reason not to award the MVP to deGrom if I had a vote.

The AL on the other hand is stacked but it's become a two-way race of Trout and Betts, with Jose Ramirez going on a bad slide. I can't see the former winning again due to voter fatigue and winning team ********, but f*** if JD Martinez even gets more votes than Trout I will be pissed, he unfortunately has a good shot due to the dinosaurs.

Shohei Ohtani has more WAR AS A POSITION PLAYER than Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar lol, with his pitching contributions he really should take the RoY in a landslide. Shout out to Joey Wendle who, while old to be a rookie, is putting up a very solid 3-win season.

It really sucks when you look at the AL Central NL West/East and WC, they'd be in the thick of it for 3 Pennant races, and the WC... as you say, such a s***** time for them, they also came out of the gate with a 2-12 record, ouch!

deGrom is not winning the NL MVP, but you're right - it's going to be a tight race with lots of players getting votes. Javy Baez is going to get some votes. Goldy might if they sneak into the playoffs. Arenado and Story will get votes. Carpenter will get votes.

I'm not sure Yelich and Cain will - even though they currently have the highest WAR in the NL (for position players). It must be nice for their GM to look at that WAR leader board an see those 2 at #8 and #9 in the majors though.

You also know JD Martinez is going to get more votes than Trout. He probably wins AL MVP...

I have a general question that hopefully a more knowledgeable poster here can answer.

How come Fangraphs team WAR is measured far lower than individual WAR?

The top team in the MLB, for example, are the Astros with 5.6 WAR. The lowest is the Orioles with 1.6 WAR.

https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Team

If I check an individual team, like the Astros, it breaks down position contributions by player, and then it says, for example, that, say, Altuve has contributed only 0.5 WAR but we know, individually he has actually contributed 4.3 WAR?

The first two links are rest of season projections. I might be misunderstanding your question though.

Like BTS pointed out, you're looking at their projections, which is what Depth Charts does by default. If you wanted to see team batting WAR, you'd go here: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2018&month=0&season1=2018&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=&age=&filter=&players=0

Maybe you should stop dropping so many people

Alex Bregman is the first 3B in MLB history to hit 50 doubles and 30HR in the same season.

Insane that he’s been by far their best position player this year.

By the way I just looked it up and Jose Ramirez was just 1 homerun off doing it last season.

4th youngest to do it I believe (ARod, Gehrig and Pujols)

Lol the Rays might end up with a better record than Cleveland despite CLE being in the worst division in sports right now and the Rays will miss the playoffs entirely.

Get rid of divisions and let the five best teams make it (4th and 5th play the WC game).

Rays could still end up with the best record in the NL as well. There was that ugly stretch right at the deadline where they lost 3 in a row to the O's and got swept by the White Sox. Bet they would like that back...or the first 17 games of the season.

Seems to me this guy hit the nail on the head but no one wants to admit it and would rather just call him a bigot:

Such are results of affirmative action :)

When diversity trumps merits – the quality of product goes down. Always. Even at FanGraphs.

Is he wrong? How does a f***ing lawyer get an article that wrong?

how the f*** is he a lawyer

I guess that’s how a lawyer ends up as a full-time writer at Fangraphs.

I didn't understand why so many of you seem obsessed with Sheryl Ring's articles, now it all makes sense.
