Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 My god, every channel was just showing Halladay montage after Halladay montage on TV this morning. It was really hard to watch. I really don't know if I'd be a baseball fan today if not for Doc, there was a time in Jays history where he was pretty much the only reason to follow the team. The broadcasters always threw the term "throwback" on Roy and while cliches annoy me, this was true. We will likely never see a pitcher like Halladay again. No one worked harder than he did, or had a bigger drive to finish what he started. As a Jays fan, what I appreciated most was that he really wanted to win here. So much so that he took incredibly team friendly deals to free up cash for extra pieces. I really wish he'd have been here for 2015. This year sucks. I feel like a family member died. I always say that. There are 2 players that got me hooked onto the Blue Jays and it was Delgado and Doc. I wouldn't watch every game but i rarely missed a Doc start. You always knew that there would be a great chance to win and the game would just fly by.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I'll never forget that Friday night. I was at my good friends house for dinner. Just as we were finishing up I remember the Phillies first playoff game was on and that Doc was pitching. I remember being a little embarrassed that I'd forgotten the game was already on (knowing full well I wanted to see Doc's first playoff start), as we finished up and moved on to the couch to flip on the game I casually said - "Doc's probably throwing a no-hitter", because, well, he was awesome. I think we flipped it on in about the 6th inning and low and behold - Doc was throwing a no-hitter. Glued to the screen for the remainder of the game I remember being so happy for him when Ruiz somehow got that ball to first (after tripping on the bat and falling). Another great Doc moment I'll never forget.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 Here's a link with lots of player messages. I really liked the Dan Haren ones. https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/mlb-community-reacts-death-roy-halladay-212404900.html Another thing I find ironic is that Doc was Charlie Morton's idol. Charlie changed his delivery to mimic Doc, which turned around his career and obviously just lead to Morton closing out the World Series in an absolutely dominating performance.
Nabru Verified Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I echo other comments on here. It's tough to lose someone you're close to unexpectedly, especially at a young age of 40. A lot of us have probably been through an unexpected death at some point. I don't really care about sports as much as I used to but even being somewhat of a fan - this is still a tough one. I wish I'd seen him pitch live just once.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-i-loved-about-roy-halladay/ I thought this was well written. If you click on the story inside the story - it's well written too. It tells the tail of how Roy bought 60 custom watches for everyone on the team following his perfect game. It talks about how he insisted the "4 aces" be dubbed the "5 aces" and that Joe Blanton be included in everything.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 The news brought me to tears at work. I will miss you Roy.

TMZ has some cell phone footage taken by some boaters moments before he crashed.

Don't know how to feel about the guys using their phone cameras right next to the plane, at least it jumpcuts when they notice the body (when they say "there he is"). If you watch the helicopter footage of the marine patrol getting to the plane you see him floating face down next to the plane, right where these guys were filming.

TMZ has some cell phone footage taken by some boaters moments before he crashed. I don't even know what to say. "What was he thinking?" is just not a question I'd ever expect to hear someone ask of a guy like Doc. Just makes this that much more shocking for me, f***. Not to sound oversensitive or to suggest Term did anything wrong, but can we have separate threads for discussing the crash and for remembering Doc? I'd rather just stick to reading the latter and not the former myself.

I didn't notice that second video until I saw your post. Definitely difficult to watch.

I read the comments to this article and saw this: Roy Halladay: 76 ERA- 78 FIP- Greg Maddux: 76 ERA- 78 FIP- Holy s***.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 Me and one of my Korean colleagues at work both talk about baseball a lot. He's a huge baseball fan and follows a lot of Korean and Japanese baseball along with MLB. Told me the story when he moved here in 2006 that when he chose the English name Roy after Doc watching him pitch during that season. I thought that was the coolest thing ever.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I am so happy that everywhere I turn to - news sites, sports sites, social media everywhere, everyone has nothing but very positive things to say. It's not just the standard "RIP" and move on, you can tell how good of a person he was and how many people he's effected.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I hate how these guys likely sold this footage to TMZ.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 His death is bigger than whatever small gripes I have right now, but it is slightly annoying that the media down here in the States is covering him like he was a life long Philly and not a Toronto Blue Jay for 12 seasons. I wish we could have had a better team surrounding him those 12 years and that it never came down to trading him. I am glad that he went on to have a lot of individual and team success once we did trade him though.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I guess this is the biggest tragedy in baseball since the Jose Fernandez crash. When he passed on, I cared, but I didn't really care. In that I took a moment for the initial shock and to absorb the news and then moved on with my day. Same for most other deaths of celebrities I like. This is much different. Up until around 3pm yesterday I was in a great mood. Now I've just been feeling lousy. My first reaction based on the s***-for-brains that started this thread was that he was trolling for attention once again. But it turns out he wasn't joking. I didn't know Halladay personally, but I felt like I did, following his career. When he was pitching turds in 2000 and bottomed out in A-ball before becoming the dominant pitcher that we all know, that to me will be my defining memory of him. When life gets tough you can either whine about it or do something to get through it and persevere. When there's some adverse situation that you're facing, think "What would Roy Halladay do?" That will be his legacy to me.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I hate how these guys likely sold this footage to TMZ. Well, it's not like these bros were overly tasteless in the recording. If they made money as accidental "independent journalists" this is no different than many of the other tragic events we see on the news today. I'm kind of glad that this footage exists, so there won't be endless speculation like with Fernandez. We don't have it all, but we have enough to get a reasonable picture of what went on. The legend of Roy Halladay doesn't match with the decisions made in that video. Single guy with no kids...you can afford to take some risks. Family man...really should have thought twice about that. Roy f***ed up, and he paid a disproportionate penalty for that mistake. Not really much more to say about this issue, so I will move on and hope others will too.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I just read something that suggested the plane he was flying was basically a sea-doo with wings.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I just read something that suggested the plane he was flying was basically a sea-doo with wings. Yes, it's a water plane, he was an avid fisherman.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I just read something that suggested the plane he was flying was basically a sea-doo with wings. I read that almost 30% of those sold have crashed, it was a messageboard (may even of been here) not a reputable site. While I don't completely understand thrill seekers, as I'm not one of them, I do know enough of them that they aren't really going to think about this happening. They love the thrill. If Roy loved the thrill...well at least he died doing something he loved. I guess this is the biggest tragedy in baseball since the Jose Fernandez crash. When he passed on, I cared, but I didn't really care. . Roy was a local athlete and it hits the Toronto community hard, but for me I loved watching him pitch. He was done pitching and I can watch any game I wish to see him again. I got to see the full capacity of what he could do in that area. So I feel for his family, I feel for the baseball community, but I can move on quickly from most deaths of people I knew or didn't know. I realize it sounds cold but the way I deal with death is remember the good. With Roy there was lots of good pitching. With Jose I'm left with the "what could have been..."

If Roy loved the thrill...well at least he died doing something he loved. While the 30% is true they've only delivered less than 10 planes so far - they kept having production delays and have over 100 backorders to fill. It's the third overall crash, and second fatal crash in 6 months, the previous fatal one the pilot was the guy who actually designed the plane. The first fatal crash was ruled pilot error (they flew into a canyon surrounding a lake with only one exit and no room to maneuver - the investigation concluded that the pilot thought it was the next canyon along that had 2 exits). You don't need a full pilot's licence, or a runway, and you can transport it in a trailer as the wings fold up. It's also much cheaper than a standard plane. Unless this crash ends up being a mechanical fault, as crazy as it sounds, I think the publicity and raised awareness of the plane could help sell more of these things.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2017 Posted November 9, 2017 I'm not one to usually be affected when celebrities or athletes die but Doc was my favourite athlete of all time. Wasn't able to get to much ball games with my dad but when we did and found out Halladay was pitching, it always made the game that much more memorable. RIP
