Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 Is there any reason to believe at this point he even has minor league potential, let alone major league potential? I ask because I honestly don't know. Ask again in a couple years, he'll likely get drafted. Topped out 96 sits 81 as a 16 year old.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 Ask again in a couple years, he'll likely get drafted. Topped out 96 sits 81 as a 16 year old. How can he only be sitting at 81 if he can top out at 96?
Nafro Verified Member Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 RIP Roy. I get the feeling no matter whatever your son does, he will do it with class and pride; like he watched you do. 16+ years of guidance was too short of time, but more than enough time for you to instill your morals, and work ethic. Whatever your son does, he will do you proud, and carry himself with a heavy heart. A heavy heart, that you can't be there, in person; to see the great man he will become. But don't worry, he is always there with you.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 How can he only be sitting at 81 if he can top out at 96? Because he was 16, plus the Perfect Game stats are likely not up to date, through the State playoffs he was used as a reliever. You don't see many kids as a junior and sophomore with a grade of 7 through PG, actually that grade is after his 1st year, will be interesting to see where he's graded this winter.

Cleveland Steamer Verified Member Posted November 21, 2017 Author Posted November 21, 2017 Haven't read it but can I assume that he was flying recklessly. Correct. Some reports say he was flying 75 feet above homes.
vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Yea, dont read the comments on this article, people are truly vile. Pretty much a general rule not to read the comments, but especially when it comes to something where people can act morally superior over another person.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 havent read the whole thread but did look up the plane. their advertising says you can fly it after 30 hrs of training. that is f***ing crazy. seems like less effort then a driver's licence. thanks for the memories Roy, rest in sweet peace
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Pretty much a general rule not to read the comments, but especially when it comes to something where people can act morally superior over another person. Some people are just complete s*** nuggets, but I think there are others that call out the careless flying and refer to him as stupid because of frustration. Frustrating that it's such a needless death that could've easily been avoided if more care was taken. I don't think that point can be argued. More care and Doc would still be with us. People are mad and are taking it out on Roy because he left us... And it wasn't for a good enough reason. It never should've happened. And it's sad.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Only one person knows what really was going on in that cockpit. I will give him the benefit of the doubt because he was a man with common-sense and he deserves our respect. R.I.P. to our best ACE ever.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 24, 2017 Posted November 24, 2017 Roy was told he would have to fill out an application and apply for a position. *Unbelievable* I'm very curious, and I apoligise if this has been mentioned before, but if Roy was elected to the HOF it is the players choice as to what cap he wears going in. Now we were his obvious choice the day he retired. But hints since then.....example, him having to fill out an application to work for Blue Jays, but Phillies hire him, and Brandy had Celebration of Life with the Phillies.....all this makes me wonder, if he was elected and that's a big if, but its her picking, and I believe she might just choose a Phillies cap....Your thoughts??

Halladay signed a 1 day contract to retire with the Jays. IMO he'd have made it in anyway, but now he'll be first ballot HoF guaranteed.

The Elliott story was refuted by the Blue Jays. 2. The players DO NOT choose their cap. The rules were changed after Dave Winfield accepted cash from the Padres to wear their cap on his plaque.

IMO he'd have made it in anyway, but now he'll be first ballot HoF guaranteed. I don't think him dying changes when he gets voted in. It shouldn't. Inclusion into the HOF should be merit based, not, 'oh...you recently died...I'm gonna vote for you now cause it's good PR.' If he deserved 1st ballot 2 months ago then he should deserve it today.

In the real world though it does. The voters who maybe would have left him off their ballots for the first few years will be swayed. I'm not saying that's the right thing to do or not, just that it will happen.

I believe it was either Pat Quinn or Pat Burns that didn't get in right after they died also. It doesn't always sway...and I don't think it should. But that's kind of the question...are people voting with their hearts or heads...personally, I'm more of a head guy.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2017 Posted November 24, 2017 1. The Elliott story was refuted by the Blue Jays. 2. The players DO NOT choose their cap. The rules were changed after Dave Winfield accepted cash from the Padres to wear their cap on his plaque. That's ********. Ok, Dave Winfield is not exactly poor (or he shouldn't be if he managed his money), but he would be 10 times richer if he was born a generation later with the same talent. Getting into the HOF is an incredible personal achievement and it should give you some privileges, including which cap you will wear on the plaque. If you wish to sell that right, it should be within your powers to do so. As long as you played for that team. Choosing a Padres cap is not even an egregious choice....like WTF he wants to be just another Yankee in there? Especially since he wasn't treated well by Steinbrenner. The Padres are a logical choice for him money or not. I get it, they don't want really egregious choices like Boggs with the Rays...but still this HOF situation has already become a real embarrassing farce as it stands right now. Let the players choose and if there is a cash reward for it well that's their choice.

I had to Google them to find out they were hockey players! Looks like it was Burns who didn't get in when first nominated and still alive, then took 3/4 years after his death to be elected. I'll have to defer to hockey fans on whether he would have got in anyway.

Most folks believed that Burns should have been in already IIRC.

Changing the rule based on one ******* is not a wise way to run an organization. People need some f***ing morals.

I didn't know the rules were changed....I know he did amazing things for us.....but most national write ups focus on his Phillies days, hopefully they don't ignore his track record in Toronto when deciding the cap.

I think there's a pretty favorable precedent in how Gary Carter was handled. He played the bulk of his career in Canada but enjoyed a greater spotlight and won a World Series with the Mets. The Hall still opted to put him in as an Expo. I would expect Halladay to be treated similarly.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2017 Posted November 24, 2017 Roy did an interview in 2014 spring training that he would go in as a Blue Jay. Said the same thing after he got inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall Of Fame.
