reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Huge concern for the Red Sox: "9:48am: There is “serious concern” that Price may require Tommy John surgery, Bowden tweets. 8:46am: The Red Sox are holding their breath after sending in key lefty David Price for an MRI, as Jim Bowden of ESPN.com reports (Twitter links). For now, Price will just be held out of his next scheduled start while he heads for a second opinion. The broader outlook is not known, but manager John Farrell says there is concern given the degree of soreness Price is experiencing. And while it’s far from clear whether there’s reason yet to believe he could be headed for surgery, the veteran lefty is already slated to see one or both of the game’s foremost Tommy John experts — Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Neal ElAttrache — for a second opinion, per Tim Britton of the Providence Journal (via Twitter). Price, 31, signed a record-setting seven-year, $217MM with the Red Sox last winter. The agreement includes an opt-out opportunity after the 2018 campaign. He has earned only $30MM of the total thus far; needless to say, Boston has a lot riding on the lefty, both now and in the future. While his first season with the Red Sox didn’t pan out quite as hoped, with Price recording only a 3.99 ERA, he still managed to throw a typically robust 230 frames. Boston has hoped that he and newly added starter Chris Sale would provide a historically excellent 1-2 lefty punch, with reigning AL Cy Young winner Rick Porcello rounding out a top-flight front of the rotation. If the worst case comes to pass for Price, then the club does have three arms to round out the staff — Eduardo Rodriguez, Drew Pomeranz, and Steven Wright (assuming all remain on track with their respective health issues) — but little in the way of certainty beyond that. Boston president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski previously shipped out veteran Clay Buchholz, but he has expressed confidence in the team’s remaining depth." https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/03/david-price-undergoes-mri-after-experiencing-elbow-soreness.html
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Tough break for price, but if he does need TJS, division title prospects for the jays increase significantly
crmr Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Thanks for the thread. I remember when all the headline news was posted on the forum, now its all these prediction threads. Will really hurt them if he's hurt, that's for sure.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 If David Price undergoes TJS, not only do the Jays chances improve, but the AL East becomes wide open--with even the Yankees, O's and Rays having a chance. Boston's pitching depth is very lacking, with Pomeranz having elbow concerns, Wright still uncertain after Farrell's stupidity to pinch-run and a regression candidate, and E-Rod's knee.. and AAA is basically barren of quality options, as Henry Owens still can't throw strikes, Elias and Kendrick are AAAA types, and Johnson's still working his way back from anxiety issues. And don't expect a trade--Boston does not have many assets after the Sale and Thornburg deals.
Caper Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 This contract had disaster written all over it. But that isn't some bold proclamation on my part. It seems a decent majority of contracts of that type end in disaster status. Maybe I'm wrong. It seemed, just observing while he was in TO that even when he was rolling, I was always thought that he just didn't have the stuff to be near as dominant as he aged and lost a few ticks on the fastball.

JFD Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Going for a second opinion is never a good sign. I would be shocked if he doesn't need surgery now.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 I wonder how many of the people who wanted Atkins and Shapiro's heads for not signing Price are gloating about this injury today?

polar bear Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 How long before Sale goes down that path?
keggy Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 I wonder how many of the people who wanted Atkins and Shapiro's heads for not signing Price are gloating about this injury today? Price was Lacava era.
wamco Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Usually price waits until the playoffs to fall apart
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Price was Lacava era. There's no way Lacava had much of a say as to whether or not Price was retained. Mark Shapiro was President, and there was no chance of him signing off on a 217M contract for Price.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Price was Lacava era. Well fine then... I wonder how many people who wanted Shapiro's head (no one was pining this on Lacava).
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Yeah Lacava would have had no authorization to offer a contract like that. That would have been all on Shapiro and ownership. And it sounds like the Jays were out of the bidding on Price LONG before Boston signed him.
43211234 Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 I think LaCava is the real power in the front office. Shapiro and Atkins are just puppets.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 http://gifsec.com/wp-content/uploads/GIF/2014/04/Vladimir-Putin-laugh-gif.gif I see some good karma being built up in this thread. Hope Sanchez or Stroman don't have to go shopping for second opinions any time soon.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 I wonder how many of the people who wanted Atkins and Shapiro's heads for not signing Price are gloating about this injury today? No kidding. Was there anyone on this Board who was advocating for a 7/210 deal like he got? To its credit, I don't think so. What I could never figure out were people pissed off we didn't make a hail mary light offer, as if we were going to get a discount because he liked the popcorn at the RC or something.
BJBirdy Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 I wonder how many of those bandwagon Jays fans from 2015 have forgiven Shapiro for being "cheap" and not signing Price to that big contract now....

closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Off to see Dr. Andrews. Does anyone else even do Tommy John these days? If something ever happens to Andrews, MLB is going to have a serious problem.
Gary Verified Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Shartkins sure avoided a disaster by signing Happ over Price.

If something ever happens to Andrews, MLB is going to have a serious problem. Undoubtedly, there are numerous other excellent surgeons that will fill the gap. In fact, I would guess a lot of the surgeries done by Andrews' practice are already being done by others working under the old master's tutelage. And many of them will have gone on to start their own successful practices. As for Price, who knows what comes out of this. He may be lucky and get away without surgery. But other than Tanaka, there don't seem like any other pitchers who have avoided surgery on elbow ligament injuries (assuming that is the issue). Sure will be some lost sleep in Red Sox nation tonight. I would rather see him comes through this and the Jays beat them out this season anyway......

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 David Price averaged 244.5 IP per season over the last 3 years (including playoffs). Even workhorses break down, that's an insane workload.

I know I would. Of course others can perform the surgery.
