The Yankees want to get under the luxury tax (and stay there), plus they value prospects just as much as the Jays do. No way they touch Stanton's contract, nevermind give up prospects on top of that.

I definitely see them making a splash in free agency '18 though. I could see a Machado-Didi-Torres infield for them, left to right.

I don't think "Stay there" is as much of a concern. Reset the percentage while they are so close, and deal salary again based on the next TV contract.

Yeah, there's no way in hell they want to stay under in the future, just reset it. They're eyeing that ridiculous FA class next year.

Yeah I meant stay there for this coming season. No way they miss out on Machado who I think makes way too much sense for them. I haven’t looked at their payroll situation but they are really young with only one bad contract (Ellsbury). They might be able stay in the tax range and still sign a top free agent a year from now.

Estimated $152 (down to $5.5M in owed to former players) as it stands right now with "near min" players filling out the roster. Considering they have 20 or so spots accounted for they could really fill out those spots with Min contracts'ish.

What to people estimate the non-25 man costs to be as far as the luxury tax is concerned? 15M or so?

Seattle really has a type.

It feels like Oakland is Chapman and a bunch of Ryon Healys. Clearing him inches their defense back towards respectability. They also pick up 6 years of a good reliever and a prospect. I like it for them.

Agreed, Pagan looks like a pretty good reliever. Just ridding themselves of Healy is a shrewd move for Oakland, but getting actual assets in return is so nice.

Also, Chapman is such a delightful defensive spectacle.

Rays likely getting a new 800M stadium team paying only 150M

Good for them

Maybe then they could draw some fans to the games instead of playing in the over sized tent

They also need a much better, more accessible location. The current location cuts them off from most of their potential market. There's a reason why all the other Tampa Bay teams are in Tampa and not in St. Petersburg.

how'd that work out for Miami?

That has to sting for a tax payer... 650MM for a team that only got 15,670 fans per game on average last year.

I wonder if that is the plan or if the new stadium stays in St. Pete

Florida teams in any sport always seem to be in the bottom in attendance no matter what sport it seems.

Damn there goes the Expos. It sucks, we also have a crappy new socialist mayor who doesn't like baseball either. Double whammy for us.

It's such a con job when billionaires get the taxpayer to fund their toys (stadiums)

I don't blame them for trying. As often as not the government caves in to their demands. Fair or not, it's a good play by the owner.

According to the Tampa Bay Times the favoured location is Ybor City which is basically downtown Tampa.
