Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 It's leaked, not announced. Gardenhire apparently was just hired by the Tigers. They should have just dug up Sparky Anderson and propped him up in the dugout. These type of hires have me convinced that if the Jays let Gibby go he would be picked up by another org in no time. Anyone better than Ausmus though.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Multiple report say Red Sox plan to hire Alex Cora as manager Awkward announcement as he's in the playoffs as bench coach for the Astros Hmmmm MLB should do something about this. It seems really bizarre and wrong.

Cronyism in baseball (and sports in general) will always exist. That's the only reason I can think of why certain managers get so many opportunities.

At least he's hilarious, there was no clubhouse revolt after this s***** season, players still like him, and he does a lot of things right. Pretty sure Gardenhire is still a fan of pitching to contact, and let's not forget "legendary" manager and curmudgeonly old man Jim Leyland, who thinks that Eric Hosmer is better than Paul Goldschmidt.

Gibbons since the front office change has been fine with me. Still some derpy moments here and there, but that's with all managers. His managing in 2015 was some of the worst I have seen on a nightly basis, but that was him with a different front office. The good thing about him is he is open to adjusting his style to what the org wants, and he's clearly bought in to what the front office wants to push. He's been more than tolerable the past two seasons. Gibby 2.0. is a damn good option compared to retreads like Gardenhire. At least we don't have a stubborn old school guy who is going to do what he wants regardless. Gibbons is old school but is willing to adjust, and that's admirable.

Because Washington has a terrible front office who lucked out with Stras, Bryce and Rendon and then just threw money at the rest of their problems. They are more Yankees than the actual Yankees.

They are more Yankees than the actual Yankees. It's so true. They gave Scherzer a contract that by all rights could have turned into an albatross (may yet still, but he's been a god so far), and Daniel Murphy has panned out far better than anyone could have anticipated. They sucked butts for years and fell into several generational talents (Stras & Harper). Meh. They have one more year of Harper, then it all goes haywire.

Can you imagine only getting a draft pick back for a Harper leaving? Do you trade him in the offseason? Trade him midseason? Resign to a monstrous deal for 400 million dollars over the next 12 years that will inevitably suck? Or keep him all year and let him go, getting only a draft pick as compensation? Are any of those even what you would call good options? If you're Washington, you basically have to decide which one of those sucks the least
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 With that expansion talk I can imagine the Washington ownership would send that team back to Montreal and take the new franchise in two years, lol. "Alright we got the good years out of the turnip franchise and left it as a dumpster fire, time to start fresh!"

If you're Washington, you basically have to decide which one of those sucks the least There's no way they can trade him in the offseason, they are WS contenders. He won't sign an extension until he hits FA. Basically they just need to accept the fact that they only have him for 2018, and if for some reason they fall out of the playoff hunt, they could trade him as a rental. They may be able to ultimately re-sign him in FA, but we all assume it will be a record contract.

As would I, which really is the absolute worst case scenario for Washington. 1 draft pick for a generational talent leaving. Seems like the "best" of the s***** options is actually resign him to a gigantic contract that you know eventually becomes an albatross. I can't fathom the backlash that would happen if he was traded before the end of next season. I actually hope for the trade just for the firestorm it would create

Did everyone know that both the Cards and Angels will be paying Pujols over $1M a year until 2030 (Angels on a Personal Services Contract for 10 years after he retires, Cards deferred $9M and will pay him $1.2M a year starting 2020) Lastly Chocolate Thunder throwing out the first pitch in a NC playoff game is a personal fave.

Somewhere out there, there is a Jimcanuck Nationals fan hoping and praying for a 10-30 start next year so they trade Harper and have a better shot at being good in 2022.

He's such a different free agent though being just 26 when he hits the open market. I think even Jimbo would be looking at locking him up. Of course I said the same when Heyward went to the open market

It was very unlikely to ever end well (which I said at the time). Harper shouldn't have those same issues.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Dickey's option was declined (= to 7.5 mil). Kind of surprising as he's coming off a good year.

Harper shouldn't have those same issues. And Heyward's D is still fine (18 DRS is second best among RFers), baserunning stats will fluctuate. I don't think his legs are what has caused him to drop from a pretty consistent 120 wRC+ guy to being a 71 wRC+ in his prime years. I personally don't think Harper will, and would risk a 10 year contract with zero thoughts about it...but no one is immune to dropping off a cliff.

He just put another 2-win season on the board, and is about as reliable as it gets as far as being able to go 30+ starts. If he wants to pitch next year, he should have no trouble finding a home at that salary.

Yeah, Dickey had a pretty decent season overall. Still eats up innings and gives you average production. I don't want him back, especially if he's going to dictate who the back up catcher is again, but could do a lot worse for the #5 spot.

It's funny, we were all so happy to see him go, but he would have started 30+ games and been our SP4.
