TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 In the 10th I called it would go 20 but it's ending this inning, teams will get sloppy as they just want it to end
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 The AL East is collectively 14 games over .500 with a +63 run differential already. That's the other thing about this 11-20 start..if they were in some other division it might be easier to come back. The ALE is again looking like the best division in MLB.

Exactly right We could get to 500 in a few weeks and still be just as far or further back There are too many other good teams

Both were about as (un)likely to pitch well though Bedard did dance through the raindrops a fair bit in his first WBC start.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 But somehow I don't think they're torn up about their abysmal play. Their recent World Series rings keep them warm at night. I'm honestly going to be a little triggered if a team like the Giants ends up getting a top 3 draft pick. If the Jays aren't going to compete this year, I'd have no problem seeing them slide to the bottom of the standings and get a good f***ing pick for once. This is a team that has never had a #1 overall pick in its history, and hasn't picked above 4th since 1982.

Look at the Red Sox, they don't tank and they still make excellent picks like Benintendi. Meanwhile the last times the Jays had a really high pick, they blew it on Deck McGuire.

And they picked 7th overall TWICE between 2013 and 2015. lol @ Trey Ball.

Hoffman was picked 9th. Too bad they didn't take Conforto who went 10th.

But of course the loser mentality prevails. Let's cheer for our team to lose and embarrass the franchise with a 100 loss season for a very, very, very slight advantage in the draft. When success is far more dependent on the team developing the prospects it has. The Yankees haven't lost 100 games in over 100 years and have 27 World Series to show for it since then. Meanwhile the Phillies have oodles and oodles of losing seasons under their belt and have two World Series to show for it.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 There's no tanking in baseball!!! (apologies to Tom Hanks) But seriously. This ain't the NBA

If you'd like to continue arguing the idea that "hi draft pix arnt gud", go right ahead. That's not the hill I'd prefer to die on, personally. Now I'm beginning to remember why you were run off here in the first place. No one would ever argue that high draft picks aren't worth more than lower ones. That's ridiculous. The argument is if those high draft picks are worth throwing away a year and embarrassing the franchise. The other argument is that player development, good trades and smart drafting trumps having high draft picks a lot of the time.

When was the last time the Spurs had a top draft pick? Yes they got lucky in that David Robinson decided to get injured the same year that Tim Duncan was available in the draft. They have since parlayed that luck into 50+ win seasons for as long as the Raptors have been around.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 And #1 picks don't always work out--for every Bryce Harper, Mauer or Price, there's busts like Tim Beckham, Delmon Young, Matt Anderson..
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 The argument is if those high draft picks are worth throwing away a year and embarrassing the franchise. The qualifier I used was "if the Jays aren't going to compete this year." If this team isn't going to make the playoffs then I'd rather they finish with a high draft pick than string together a few s***** win streaks and finish 5 games below .500. People can talk about how there's no tanking in baseball but year after year players like Bryant, Correa, Cole and Machado are available at the top of the draft. Nobody would care about "embarrassing the franchise" if it resulted in a better outlook for the team. His post was self-deprecating, you f***ing dimwit. My bad if that's how it was intended, but it was phrased strangely if it was.

Spurs get lucky, land one of the best players of all-time and are able to build around him for the next 15 years, winning multiple championships because he's so good. The Spurs, much like the Jays in the late 80's/early 90's were aided by being ahead of the curve and able to tap into an international market before everyone else caught on. I'll also admit they have excellent scouts and a phenomenal system; however, I strongly doubt they are anywhere near as successful with that approach if Tim f***ing Duncan doesn't fall into their laps.

Tanking in the NBA is the way to go. They tanked that one year and got Duncan which lead to a nearly 20 year dynasty. They supplemented that one pick very very well though.
