P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 all this war talk is making me sick. It's a ******** new age stat that means nothing. Lol! It's all-encompassing. It actually means everything. It's not perfect, but it's the best stat available to us to measure a player's contributions in all facets of the game. It's not the be-all/end-all, but, like any stat, it should be used with other stats to best gauge a player's value and output.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 I think it would be an interesting trade. Puig has 3 years of control left, and is projected at 3 WAR next year (and the projection looks reasonable to me). The cost (after factoring in Smoak) would be ~4M / year plus the arbitration year. Whether Puig is a clubhouse cancer/distraction or not, I don't know. Add Moss and we'd be looking at about 12M left to add a few relievers and a backup catcher. Puig is risky but has a lot of upside. I think we'd be crazy to give up Osuna (young, good, cheap, a position we need more not less of) for him, but if there was another way to trade for him then I'd be all for it.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Agreed. He'd be a great fit for what we need. I wonder if Sanchez would get it done. Think I'd do that fairly easily. E: oops, I forgot that Puig isn't super cheap.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Is Ben Revere free right now? I know the org has had a big swing and hates him apparently. But to me, he's still got some juice in those legs and contact and quality ab's are real. Plus the defense is really solid in LF/CF, route running be damned.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Jays. Hard pass. Wow, really? I'd easily trade Osuna and Smoak for Puig.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 ... for some reason I brainfarted on the contracts. That was pretty bad. I'll accept my punishment. I'd still do Smoak + Osuna in a heartbeat, though.

Revere was a polarising player when he was here, so many hated his complete lack of power! He's an option I guess. Is he any better than Carrera or Upton though? FWIW the player we traded him for, Drew Storen, is also a free agent.

I'd still do Smoak + Osuna in a heartbeat, though. I think I would too (And I was going to make a joke that it would take a Tulo finding the fountain of youth to land Puig). I've become a believer in "fit" though. Seeing as the Jays F.O. has never been linked to Puig, I think that Shatkins don't feel he is.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 They sent Puig to the minors last year because of a s***** attitude. I personally don't care but his trade value is down because of it. He also hasn't exactly been healthy thus far. I don't think it would take an arm and a leg to get him. I think Biagini and the right combination of prospects could get him.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 I would do Osuna for Puig in a heart beat.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 your dumn Osuna is close to as valuable as Puig is projected to be, makes less money, and is controllable for a year longer. I might gamble him on Puig returning to 4-win form if performance was the only question mark he had, but he also happens to be one of the biggest pieces of s*** in baseball. I think if the Dodgers could get an asset like Osuna for him, Puig would have been traded before the 2016 playoffs. I don't think anything close to that valuable is on the table from anyone.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 I don't think Biagini has any tangible value to the Dodgers. They aren't moving Puig for a middle reliever.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 You could get way more for Osuna though. Puig is a lottery ticket. You think when they inevitably trade him they're going to get a young, 2 win closer with playoff experience and years of control back? Talking more from a pure value point of view, 4 years of Osuna probably provide less than 2 years Puig IMO (then you are giving the negative asset in the deal as well). The team is not in position to move Osuna at this point...but if they develop someone to replace him (or get a replacement+ back) they should consider exploiting this reliever market. I'd take the under on Osuna at 2.0 wins as well.

But we all know that Revere trade messed up with Gibby's lineup he had in his head. Zeke played over his head x5, great production, great vibes! Ty Zeke. But I would never go into a season counting on either BJ or Zeke as sure things, that's what we're doing right now. Insure yourself with Ben Revere, who is tough nosed at the core.

They aren't moving Puig for a middle reliever. *plus prospects If you'd rather, delete Biagini entirely and just use prospects. Since they are a WS contender I figured they'd want guys who present current value. We don't really have much of that to give up so I added Biagini to try and sweeten the pot.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Has there actually been a study to show the average value of a comp pick to be $10MM? http://www.breakingblue.ca/2014/03/12/the-value-of-draft-picks/ Can't help but wonder how much Puig would cost. Would absolutely love to land him. ^owns Puig in DDL ^^traded Correa for 88 mph shitballer + Puig in DDL
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 It's not a question of if Osuna for Puig is worth it. It's if you should have to give that much up. The Dodgers have completely destroyed his value. The only reason he's still with them is because he is so talented but no team is going to give up a ton of for a guy who has had problems staying healthy, being consistent, and said to have major character issues. At some point the Dodgers are just going to have to take a loss in a trade. Or play him everyday shut up and leave him alone and let him be himself antics and all. Would love to see Puig somewhere else. Would love for it to be here. But I doubt they would give up Osuna for him.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Puig is too big of a question mark for my liking. I feel like we'd want to run him out of town by June. If he already played here we'd probably be looking for ways to unload him. Grass is always greener, etc. The guy was amazing in 2013-4 though.
JTech780 Verified Member Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Doesn't moving Osuna for Puig, just fill one hole while creating another. The bullpen is a little thin as it is, moving Osuna doesn't help.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 If you actually were going to move Osuna you could get a better package than Puig.

And exactly how do you know that there's absolutely no hyperbole in his "clubhouse cancer" reputation? Are you that sanctimonious? What makes him a piece of s***, exactly? He was late for practice a couple times? Wow, you know what, you're right fatcow, that's pretty bad.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 I'm sure he's a swell guy and everyone else in baseball is the real problem. True enough, bro. Everyone in baseball hates Bautista, too. I can't believe we kept him around all those years to become one of the best Blue Jays in history, fuel two ALCS appearances, and hit one of the most iconic home runs ever. We should have traded him in 2011.

We should have traded him in 2011. Their reputations aren't close to the same. Few people in Toronto have anything bad to say about Bautista. There is every indication that Puig is disliked by his teammates, his coaching staff, and his management, in addition to having a terrible reputation with the media and other teams in the league. The simplest explanation for that is that he's a miserable prick.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
