Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Welcome back to the AL East! Fixed
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 17M a year for a one inning reliever. Money like this has blown up in the Yankees face of them before. He's not going be disgusting forever.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I'm happy about this, 17 mil is crazy for a closer.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Back loaded to get under the Luxury Tax number I hope. They were so close to that number, and I like to think that they actually care about money in Yankeeland.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I'm happy about this, 17 mil is crazy for a closer. You're happy he's in the division? Even if its a lot of money, he's worth it in the immediate future.
ChrisS Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 The toughest division in Baseball is getting tougher.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 $17 million dollars for a dude who's gonna throw ~70 innings at most. I guess Chapman is probably worth it though.

crmr Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I'm happy about this, 17 mil is crazy for a closer. Surprise! The yanks are acting like a big market team. Would be nice if we followed suit (to a lesser degree as our market is smaller) rather than act like the Rays
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Must be nice to have that kinda of money to throw around.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Woof. That kind of contract would make me nauseous as a GM.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Don't they take the AAV like in the NHL? You are correct. And truly impossible for us to calculate on our own. The definition for "payroll" under the newest collective bargaining agreement is as follows: "Payrolls are for 40-man rosters and include averages of multiyear contracts; health and pension benefits; clubs medical costs; insurance; workman's compensation, payroll, unemployment and Social Security taxes; spring training allowances; meal and tip money; All-Star game expenses; travel and moving expenses; postseason pay; and college scholarships."

Isn't it kind of a waste to be paying an elite reliever ~$17M on non-competitive years? Unless the Yankees suddenly go all out, they probably won't be expected to be competitive until 2018 or maybe 2017 if they make some big trades, and having Chapman, much like having the 3 headed monster last year seems like a waste in the meantime.
flafson Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Looks like they got a discount, they said earlier that Chapman had 92M on the table.

Right now they project 3 games better than the Jays and in a wildcard spot.

They're a solid team, dont underestimate them
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 So I guess Kenley can sign now. He won't get more but still insane 75-80M over 5 years. I will laugh if it's the Marlins.

Cashman wants to feel clever for trading him and then signing him back.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Man, how much money would Andrew Miller have made this offseason if he was a free agent. Probably around Chapman territory.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Man, how much money would Andrew Miller have made this offseason if he was a free agent. Probably around Chapman territory. More since he can go mutiple innings.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Think Chapman has been worth $20M or more for the last few years. Still only 28. As far as Yankees free agent contracts go, this is probably gonna be one of the better ones. Yeah let's say he lasts 3 years and then his arm explodes and he limps toward getting 9 WAR for 86 million. Not great but they can eat the 17 million in the last year or two and it won't kill them. They have a pretty solid team this year. They'll compete for a WC IMO and Chapman helps now.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 (edited) More since he can go mutiple innings. Probably right. Plus he's the type that will age better compared to Chapman as well. With Chapman, there's always a worry what would happen to him if his arm explodes. Edited December 8, 2016 by Ray

It's only money. He should still be good when they are competitive.
admin Site Manager Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Trade him at the deadline for prospects.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Right now they project 3 games better than the Jays and in a wildcard spot. FG depth charts has the Yankees at 85 Wins and Jays at 80. Must be a mistake though because Jays at 80 wins seems way too low. Yankees are an interesting team. Position players are almost all 1.5-2.5 Win players. Pitching staff is very good.
