Or an MILB invite. I still don't see much a difference, with a good defender in Jimenez, if Martin were to get hurt long term, we'd be f***ed regardless. And if that were the case there's trade or call up McGuire and use a good defensive catching tandem.

If we're doing a trade, I'd rather it be for Jarrod Dyson. But now that we're getting Bautista back (hopefully), I wouldn't be opposed to signing someone like Brandon Moss for cheap. Hell, I wouldn't mind giving Pompey a chance to platoon with Upton. His defense along would be valuable.

Is Pearce in LF and Bautista at 1B better than the other way around? I'm not convinced. Seems like two subpar fielders instead of just one.

 

We already know Pearce is an above average defensive player at 1B, so yeah, I think Pearce at 1B and JB in left is probably the better alternative. Although with Gibbons managing I'm positive JB would play RF everyday because he wants to prove he can still do it and Gibbons would let him. Just have to acquire a good defensive LF (or hope Pompey is ready to platoon with Upton) to compensate for the lack of D from Bautista.

I don't think it's in Gibbons hands. When negotiating our FO will probably make the point of their intent to use him (no RF or 1B/DH/LF) if a point is made

For all we know Bautista is weighing either signing with the Jays or waiting until June. That's the leverage he has with the Jays if he can make them feel like they aren't losing a pick, they are just missing out on a good deal.

Yes the pick. I like Jose but at this point I would rather move on. If we could land Dyson in a trade and sign someone to play LF to platoon with Upton I will be happy. Than we can focus on the pen and backup catcher. I don't like the free agent market for catchers though maybe we can find a nice framer/defender through trade.

I don't think Jose will hold out until June and I also believe he's had other multi year offers it just might not be a place he wants to play.

With Morales at DH, Smoak/Pearce at 1B, and Bautista's huge ego probably making him think he can still play the OF, is it really a reach to think what I suggested would happen? I'm sure Gibbons will listen to the front office if they specifically tell him to play JB at 1B/DH more than the OF, but if they just give him the pieces and let him do with them what he wishes, then I could easily see JB playing RF everyday with occasional starts at DH. The FO and JB would have to agree to a move to 1B, and really, with Pearce already being a superior 1B defensively, it seems kind of counter productive.

The Jays may not want to be in a position where they sign Moss and someone else, for example, and then Bautista is out there in March still looking for a job. I don't think that would happen, as JB is too good of a player to not sign somewhere (you would think), but if they see the pick slipping away, then I could definitely see the front office just saying screw it and signing him to a short-term deal.

 

I really wanted 3 1st round picks, but the FA market sucks, and they don't want to trade prospects, so there's not much to choose from.

JB and Pearce swapping out LF isn't a stretch... you thinking he'd never play the OF is strange. Superior 1B defense can eat a dick! Sorry after but is dumn. This is why my response is illiterate.
