FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Why? Steve strikes me as a PEDs fella as well as less injury prone (see PEDs).
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I hope it works out but I have never liked Steve Pearce. I would rather have had Moreland. Replacing EE Homers by committee. Pearce posted a higher WAR in 102 games in 2014 than Moreland has his entire career
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Pearce with 500 plate appearances would be a beast. Give him an everyday role.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Steve strikes me as a PEDs fella as well as less injury prone (see PEDs). So basically your reasoning for stating Moreland > Pearce is paranoia?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I hope it works out but I have never liked Steve Pearce. I would rather have had Moreland. Replacing EE Homers by committee. Steve is 34 next year and has never had more than 383 plate appearances in a season. He's had injury problems with the most recent being last September. I can't believe people are simply projecting him to be fantastic over the next 2 years expecting him to produce playing full time when he's never done that before. There's definitely a chance Steve crashes and burns. I hope he plays well or at least decent enough, but time will tell how smart keeping smoak and adding pearce for about 11 mil per season and committing 2 less years compares to simply signing edwin for more dollars and 4 years.

I thought they we paying him about 6 mil per season, not 11....

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 And Ryan Goins should never have to start an important game at 2B ever again. That alone is worth it for me. Wait so by signing Pearce and by this statement... Nobody on the Jays will ever be injuried again! This was a huge signing then as s*** happens but not to the Jays anymore! Grreat signing, like it even more! Lol

Not really sure why anyone would expect him to 'crash and burn' when his floor seems to be about 1.0 Win, as a positive defender and at worst a solid platoon vs lefties. Even is he only produces 1.0 win/season thats decent value at 6.25M. The downside really isnt as dramatic as you're making it out to be. The risk would be much greater paying Edwin 20+M over 4-5 years AINEC
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 He put up 5 wins in those 383 PA... I'll take the under on a 5 win season....How much do you want to bet
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I dont understand why people cant just accept this as a good depth signing. Pearce could be a piece but he is definitely not a component.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I'll take the under on a 5 win season....How much do you want to bet How about the projection. Are you willing to take the under on the 1.5 fWAR?
ChrisS Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I'll take the under on a 5 win season....How much do you want to bet He wont put up 5 wins. The point is its a short term deal for almost no money for a guy that can play multiple positions with an above average bat. If he puts up 4 wins over two seasons its great value. It allows the FO to spend money in the other areas we need help at.
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I'll take the under on a 5 win season....How much do you want to bet Nobody is expecting that... I'm just saying if a player puts up surplus value from limited games that's not a bad thing.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Has Steve Pearce played a career high of 102 games due to injury, or teams never giving him a chance to play a full season? Mostly not getting a chance. In 2014 he didn't become starter until mid June. Last two years he has had a couple injuries.

Governator Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 lol first thing I see logging in to twitter, this is why I stay far away from social media @Wilnerness590 @LottOnBaseball does the Pearce signing mean that Justin Smoak has just become our everyday first baseman?

The risk would be much greater paying Edwin 20+M over 4-5 years AINEC Edwin put up 5 straight years huge offensive years averaging 145ish games a year of production. I'd rather commit 4 years at 20+ million than having the smoak and pearce show. I'd feel much better if we had Lind and pearce going into next season. The smoak signing was a bad one. I remember people saying how we had to have Jeff Baker to platoon with Lind and Jeff Baker crashed and burned. Pearce has never played a full season and missed the end of last season due to injury. Projecting what he will do comes with a far greater range and margin of error than what EE will do next year. Pearce could play tremendously well and post an .850 OPS next year. I hope he does, but he could also post a .700 OPS.
UWHabs Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 The key here is that we're not paying him like a star. We just need him to put up about 1.5 WAR combined the next 2 seasons to make the deal worthwhile. Maybe his body breaks down and we don't get that, but in worst case, it's not a lot of money spent (barely more than we're wasting on Smoak). And he has the potential to be a solid player, in which case he could be the steal of the off-season. And as well, this also means that if Tellez forces his way into the lineup this year, Pearce can either shift over to the OF, or even just go to being a platoon bat/PH, and we're not paying him enough to feel guilty about doing that.
