Gary Verified Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 According to @Buster_ESPN on #TSN1050 -- Jose Bautista "likely to be sitting out there in January struggling to find a suitable deal." #Jays
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Take him back 1 year 14M
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 He's only "struggling" because he's probably looking for a $20M AAV. Jose is absolutely better and more valuable than Kendrys Morales. He could probably sign a nice 3 year deal (richer than Morales' contract) with a number of teams today if he wanted to.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Gonna be tough for him. After a bad year, and given his age, his AAV is going to be much lower than he was hoping for. He's also not in a great position to take a 1-year $20 million dollar deal to rebuild value, because not many teams will want to give up that draft pick for a single year of Jose.

It really feels like Jose is just posturing with the Blue Jays right now. It's hard to imagine other teams giving up a pick for him AND he fits Toronto's roster needs pretty well (even though we don't want to see him in the outfield anymore, he has that flexibility). I think if Jose was coming from a different organization a lot of people on the board would be pointing him out as a potential value signing in a weak FA class. Steamer still loves him - 3.0 fWAR projection, up there beside Bradley Jr., Pollock, Lorenzo Cain, Cespedes...

Yeah I would think he'd be able to easily get 3/45 from someone as a 1B/DH if Morales got 3/33. Like you said, he's probably looking at $20M per season on a 3-4 year deal.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Only reason I wouldn't want him back even at a reduced cost is they'd put him in RF. That man is a DH now, or a 1B if he's open to it. If they put him there, and the cost makes sense, then go for it.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Wouldn't shock me if Jose ends up taking a 1 year deal worth $15-16 million from the Blue Jays in late January, especially if EE signs elsewhere and if the team hasn't brought in another solid corner outfielder/DH bat.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 how does the outfield/1b/dh market look next year? Is it beneficial for him to do a 1 year?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Only reason I wouldn't want him back even at a reduced cost is they'd put him in RF. That man is a DH now, or a 1B if he's open to it. If they put him there, and the cost makes sense, then go for it. I think you can get away with playing him maybe 50-60 games in a corner outfield spot if need be without exposing him too much. If the Jays get someone like Fowler, then Bautista really only see's playing time in LF on occasion (if Jays can't find a solid option to platoon with Upton) or RF when one of the regulars have a day off. Don't know why he wouldn't just want to stick as a DH and play occasionally in the field moving forward. Better for him to stay healthy and aging DH's who were able to still rake into their late 30's like Ortiz, Beltran etc. have been able to land lucrative short term contracts.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 I know he's brutal in the OF, but he's still projected to put up 3 WAR there. I'd take him back even if we have to suffer him in the OF for a year or two. Always have the fall-back option of putting him at 1B if we find someone else capable in the OF.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 I really think the most cost effective solution to the OF might be resign Jose for RF and trade for Granderson for the LF. You have Upton on the bench and can rotate him into RF (putting Jose at 1B) when you play lefties. Grandy adds another LH bat which they seem to like. Spend the rest of the cash on the BP.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Awesome job by management to hold off on giving him an extension. Can you imagine the contract we'd be stuck with if they signed him prior to this past season?

Can you imagine the contract we'd be stuck with if they signed him prior to this past season? The FO would be on the hook for 20M per year well past his 40yo season... and for a guy who looked at times this year like he was playing in slo mo compared to even the prior year. I still want him back though. But the FO didn't crumble to the public negotiating pressure, which is good.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 A 1 year deal makes so much sense for Jose to take. No more qualifying offer for him next year and he can try to rebound. Throw him in left since he can't throw anymore.

I could definitely see that happening. Bautista would rather sign a 1/15 contract with another team over Toronto if it comes down to that. Only other team I think that would make sense is Texas. They signed Ian Desmond later last offseason to a 1 year deal. I could see

I agree that Bautista might not even be considering Toronto because of this. Then again, Jose seems intelligent and rational to me, so who knows if he'll turn down a potential good deal on that alone.

You think he's someone who will easily forget about getting rocked and how that fan base treated him the past year? I mean sure if they came in and blew everyone away with a large offer but if all things are equal I think he'd swallow his pride and sign here before joining that garbage organization.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 The latest I could find Atkins speaking on their interest in Jose was the 19th of November... Morales’ signing makes it “slightly less likely” that the Jays will re-sign Edwin Encarnacion, “but it by no means eliminates that possibility,” Atkins said. The Morales signing “doesn’t impact us on Jose [bautista] in any way,” Atkins noted, as there is less of a positional overlap between Bautista and Morales as there is with Encarnacion. It didn’t seem likely that both free agents would return to Toronto even prior to Morales’ acquisition, though Atkins said that “we still feel that both are realistic for us.”

I think there's a solid chance the FO did the right thing by letting them both go (in spite of what the fans wanted). I wonder how many casual fans will ever acknowledge this (if it's true).....I suspect only a few will. It's amazing to see how quickly form irreversible opinions.

Though if he did, we'd have a year of angry Jose trying to hit every single ball out of the stadium. Not sure that's a good thing to be honest!

Depends entirely on how Morales does this season. We know that if EE has a better year we'll have trolls posting all season about "cheap" Rogers and what a mistake it was, and they will have forgotten all about it by the time EE is a replacement level player on >$20m in 2020/21.
