Dude it's how ball was played... It was dirty back in my old QCK days!

I saw guys drop kicked at third or knocked out by a punch!

Fights after a game sometimes happened too!

Home plate collisions were real and people got hurt!

If you jacked one good chance next time you got beaned and for sure if you hit 2!!!

It was fun!!!

It's true!!! Why do you not believe Center field is actually the easiest position to play especially if you have speed!

The types of balls hit there take the truest flight of any field!

Or stay in flight longer with more loft a lot more too!

I'm sorry but clearly you have no idea what you're talking about if you believe CF is the easiest of the outfield positions, contrary to every scout, player and analyst. Speed has nothing to do with it, range is probably what you're referring to, but that's more than just getting to the ball quickly, it's also the read and the route, which is much more difficult in center.

No I said speed ! Range can be effected by quickness and reflexes, bad choices to the flight of the ball effects those with less speed then more speed.

You do know when talking speed Quick and Fast are two different things?

Both effecting Range as you call it and how routes or path to balls are taken, right!

The routes and Reads are simplest in Center field based on hits and flight! And probably average time in the air too!

Back to dexter fowler, not sure Shatkins and the Jays a seriously in discussions, kicking tires at best maybe!

Shatkins wants the picks more, put his stamps on this team!

If for 2-3 years at no more then 16 mill per year... Sure !!!

If more like dinger suggest at 4/80 Edwin money ... He can f*** right off to elsewhere, thanks!!!

Yes IN THEORY positional changes shouldn't change WAR. Brett Gardner is a good example of a guy who has slid between LF and CF and his UZR at both positions follows the spectrum pretty well.

The theory is necessary in order to make WAR work though so this point is a bit tautological.

You've already caught on to some of the nuance. In practice, you can't just put your three outfielders wherever you want and watch them accumulate the same total WAR. It just doesn't work like this in rel life.

Isn't the number of opportunities at each position important too?? In Centerfield there are more plays and more difficult plays.

For a replacement level outfielder it wouldn't matter where you put him

An above replacement outfielder should get more WAR in center, because there are more opportunities

A below replacement outfielder should get less WAR in center, because there are more opportunities to be below replacement.

Kind of like batting order, you want the best players to have the most chances.

BBBB going on a ridiculous drunken rant

Not even ... Drunk nore Mad in slightest!!!!

Playing CF when you have Speed is actually easier a lot of Center fielders can not provide the same value in Rf as they do in Center, maybe left they should be at least equal with a average arm!

Posted
Hence assuming a Cf can play right or left field as well as he plays center and never played the posistion is wrong!!!

Is that not what we are doing in fowler???

I would guess that outfielders can shift around easier than infielders. Going from short to second there are new things to learn, like turning the double plays from different angles, different throws.

Imagine you switched Devon Travis and Tulo. It seems obvious that Travis wouldn't make plays that Tulo can, like throwing guys out with long throws from the hole, and Tulo would have trouble with plays Travis can make, like coming in a long ways for slow grounders... at least that's how it seems to me.

Switch a guy from left to right, there isn't totally new plays.

True but they are not the same routes to the ball or in play as some think either!

All are learnt and different in skill set even though they appear functionally the same!

As in speed and range, quick and Fast are different when running!

You may still end up in the same place but it's how you get there or arrived that changes!

Ps did you read the whole thing ? The Boston example ? If you never played Right or Left like fowler we can not assume he can play them either. Echoing what I am saying I played Cf a lot and found RF and LF foreign and odd to me! Hence why I say and still believe Center is easier to play!

The hit ball to Center or the gaps are easy plays if you have speed, right field and left field the ball just seemed to do some funky s*** and tailed more to the extremes !

It's a lot different switching from infield to left field than center to left/right field.

Might be, but we can't just assume a player who's never played Right or Left just because he CF can play either just as good!

Again they are all outfield positions but not equal or the same in skill or skill sets.

Like not every WR can play slot back

Not every forward can be a Center

Not everybody who drinks beer can skip their curling team! Lol

Whole 10,000 HR thing, just saying

You should probably put less emphasis on your OF experience from a league where players bean you if you hit a homerun or hulk slam you at 3B to that of a professional ball player who has > 1000 games of MLB experience. After a short transition he'd be providing an adequate upgrade over Bautista.

The upgrade would be a welcomed thing but not a altogether certainty either! We do not know this.

He has no stats to back this and let's be honest Batz really hasn't been that good in the outfield for the last couple years!

Well the stations kept calling it cricket for some reason but they don't know what they are talking about. It was good beisbol, I especially liked the new wickets MLB added.

Batz has been so bad you might be a defensive upgrade with a little off season training.

BBBB has turned an interesting discussion about OF defense and WAR in to something unreadable (his/her beer league softball team). Thanks.

Actually thanks to me buddy the dexter fowler thread turned into a great discussion and a lively debate about what you speak.

Thank you! :)

No thank you! I loved hearing about how you can bean runner's in the back from CF. It really made me think.
