glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 That's BS. He's taking the most $ regardless of what position he's playing. True, but for some players, the position matters. If he wants to play CF, and there are similar offers out there (maybe just a bit lower, for example) from teams that will play him at CF, then it might require an overpay to get him. The Jays may have to really separate themselves from the next highest bidders in order to get him IF position matters to him (and I don't know whether it does or not). He'd be smart to move to LF or RF, it should improve his defence in theory, but whether he wants to is a different story. An extra year would surely seal the deal, but no way I want Fowler on a five year deal.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 At anything like 4/64 I'm all in on Fowler. The bat is above average, he adds runs on the bases, and I don't think it's likely that he's a bad corner OF defender. How do you know he isn't a bad corner OF ??? No stats to back this??? I still think CF is the easiest of the OF positions to play if you have speed!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Fowler + Granderson in the OF would be pretty darn good.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 I still think CF is the easiest of the OF positions to play if you have speed! How? Why?
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 I still think CF is the easiest of the OF positions to play if you have speed! You would have a tough time getting most people to agree with that. Center field generally requires more speed because it's more difficult to cover.

Do you, or anyone else, know anything about how changing the position of a player from CF to RF affects their WAR? Their bat is less valuable in a corner OF spot, no? But their defense probably gets better. Is it generally a net 0, for example?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Even 4/75 wouldn't be bad for Fowler

Cespedes has a difference of like 10-15 runs from Centre- LF but its not normally that big.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Cespedes has a difference of like 10-15 runs from Centre- LF but its not normally that big. Isn't Cespedes' difference substantially higher? I think he's an outlier in that sense, he's much worse playing CF vs playing the corner. I think fangraphs had an article on it.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Cespedes has a difference of like 10-15 runs from Centre- LF but its not normally that big. How big of a dropoff is his bat from CF to LF? He's probably shitloads better with the bat than your average CF. In LF the gap isn't as big.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Hence why I said if you have Speed!!! That still makes no sense though. Even if you have speed, the easier positions are still easier to cover.

In LF the gap isn't as big. CF had a 96 wRC+ last year and LF had 97. There's not really a difference between the two offensively anymore.

In LF the gap isn't as big. He's still a comfortably above average bat in a corner spot. About 128-130 wRC+ if we're looking at this year's LFrs
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Yes the positional adjustment is designed so that it's a net zero. So would the same hold true for a "defensive-first" player like Pillar? If you moved him to RF would his defense be so much better than a replacement player in RF that it would make up for his replacement level like bat, thus his WAR wouldn't be affected? And if that holds true, and Fowler insisting on playing CF is true, then wouldn't it make some sense, at least statistically, to just sign him on the promise that he could play CF and Pillar could play RF? lol

I still think CF is the easiest of the OF positions to play if you have speed! Which is obviously why Rickey Henderson played most of his games in CF ... oh, wait.

Brett Gardner is a good example of a guy who has slid between LF and CF and his UZR at both positions follows the spectrum pretty well. The theory is necessary in order to make WAR work though so this point is a bit tautological. You've already caught on to some of the nuance. In practice, you can't just put your three outfielders wherever you want and watch them accumulate the same total WAR. It just doesn't work like this in rel life.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 How? Why? Cause I played them all, CF because I was Fast and could affect a game more with outs and catches in Center then right or Left field in a game! plus I could always gun you down at home or third and even second used to bait runners for fun! Or if bored or I thought you were a prick, I'd let you round second and head to third and plant it in your back, cause I could! Lol Plus I found it easier just by the flight of the balls hit and how they moved!!! I played right because of my arm, left when I got old and found out Drinking rum and not killing myself for fun was ok too! But still

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Lol are you a real person or is this some sort of parody account that I'm not aware of? My coach converted me from Catcher when he realized I was fast and could affect the game more in CF making plays then behind the plate just knocking people out trying to steal home! Lol Ps or maybe the league and other coaches asked him cause they didn't want their team getting hurt... I dunno!!! Pussies!!!

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Please stop. It's true!!! Why do you not believe Center field is actually the easiest position to play especially if you have speed! The types of balls hit there take the truest flight of any field! Or stay in flight longer with more loft a lot more too!
