jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Best run org with a shite bullpen who overpaid. He is replaceable and not worth that salary. You should get a clue. I don't think you realize just how good Cecil has been over the last few years. Since 2014 among qualified RP's he has the 6th best xFIP out of all relievers in baseball and ahead of guys like Wade Davis, Davis Robertson, Craig Kimbrel, Mark Melancon ect ect. Only Britton, Jansen, Betances, Chapmen and Miller have been better.

admin Site Manager Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 After what guys like Miller did in the post season and regular season, and teams with good BPs being successful, reliever salaries gonna go through the roof. What do you guys think Chapman gets?

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 I prefer him as a starter obviously though if you're Liriano and you could pitch at an elite level out of the BP, from a financial standpoint it might be enticing. Lets say he pitches 70-80 innings with a low 2 ERA, 25-30 holds & 100 K's this season, would that net him more money & a longer contract possibly? Obviously if he fails as a reliever, he screws himself. Even as a mediocre starter who pitches 180 innings with an ERA around 4, he should still get 1/10 easily. He probably gets 2/30 if he does that. Maybe even 3/45. Cashner got 10 million for being crap last year.

What do you guys think Chapman gets? Both Chapman and Jansen could get 4/70. Cecil will look like a bargain in comparison.

Governator Community Moderator Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 During 2016, I wonder how close Cecil got to being released? That would be about 0%.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 During 2016, I wonder how close Cecil got to being released? Never even crossed anyone in the F.O.'s mind. Even while on the DL he had trade value.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Yes he may have had trade value, who knows for sure? On July 20th, he was 0-6 with a 6.75 era.

You won't get much praise here by evaluating pitchers by their ERA and W/L record much less in a 14 IP sample size. See xFIP amongst others.

Guy had some s*** luck and its difficult to perform when your A. Not Healthy and B. Don't have command of your best pitch. For the most part he was the same Brett Cecil and pitched well down the strech and in the playoffs. Pitching records are so misleading. Especially for guys like Brett who often come into tough situations.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 July 20th was 3 1/2 months into the season. When Cecil was run out in July, how much confidence did you have that he would get his job done? I had none. Yes he did turn it around with some carefull usage by the skip. Yes he was good down the stretch, but for a long time he was terrible.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 One things for sure regardless of the metrics we use to judge his performance that Gibby had lost confidence in him

Driveof85 Verified Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Shatkins is doing the right thing. They did their analysis, put a value on Cecil and made an offer. That offer was 3 years likely around 20 Mil. Same with EE, they are doing their valuations, taking risks in to account. My confidence in this regime continues to grow every day. Even though I question how they valued Morales at 3/33 the kind of dillegence these guys give to each decision, makes me think that this is the team to lead us to promised land. Wholeheartedly agree, but letting both JB and EE walk would be a mistake. JB finished strong. He will bounce back huge. The problem with everyone's contract calculations is that there is no variable for a team so close to winning it all. What is the cost for letting each piece of the puzzle go?

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 You have it backwards. No, I don't. No one cares what Cecil's ERA and W/L record looked like, those stats do not provide proper analysis into the quality of a pitcher.

I draw my conclusions from watching the games, watching the performance of the pitcher. what stats would prove my conclusions were wrong?

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Had to put Maico on ignore. There's no hint that he even wants to be educated on how it really is. Dumb + stubborn is a rough combo.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 So does Maico a) learn things, continue to make awful posts for the next few years, or c) have a long and fruitful posting career on the Jays Reddit and facebook pages and sportsnet comment sections?
