Or when I found my magic penis to run wild and find Fluffy?!?! f*** Mittens! And no, we wouldn't sign him, IF he were an FA.

Once I figure out how to upload of me throwing a rock 95 mph at a jack o lantern you won't be laughing. Morosi "blue Jays sign Canadian free agent mittens to a 2/8.5m contract, pending vetting"

You shouldn't ever, hang your hat on clutch hitting.

Agree, but it is at least worth looking at as one thing to consider in evaluating the overall performance. And also I am not even really sure what all situations they (baseball-reference) are including in the 'high leverage' category. At least RISP, 2 outs is clear.

I still think EE could sign. This a decent move, Morales offensive numbers will likely lift in a hitter friendly park. Any baseball fan will see the logic behind this move. If Reddick signs that's 2 decent replacements for EE and Joey Bats. The worst part is seeing as seeing Smoak play a lot at 1B with a poor bat. Any moves made would be difficult to replace the numbers EE put up. I'd be concentrating on signing Estrada and Donaldson to extensions now which will soften the loss of EE and Joey Bats if that is the case.

If Justin Smoak is playing everyday forget about playoff baseball next season. I still have a glimmer of hope we are going to re-sign Edwin and platoon him at 1B and DH with Morales.

Morales is making 11 mill, Jose might have cost us 17 per on a multi year deal, maybe they will use the $6 mill saved towards Edwin.

I dont know if they will resign Donaldson, he will probably command $$ and term that the FO wont go for.

I still think we may get EE. This is a solid move. Take the EE factor out fans would be happier with this move. If and it's a big if and EE re-signs and we get Reddick, this is a better team even without Bautista. Frankly whilst I appreciate what JB has done for the Jays, now I think he is a distraction in the clubhouse. Just need some bullpen help and job done if Reddick and EE sign.

We will surely trade Donaldson next winter if he can't be extended?

I think we'll be signing another 1B but EE is now too expensive as we still need at least one outfielder, a backup catcher, and some relievers.

Unless they want to give Collabello a second chance at 1B.

I feel like with this signing, there is ZERO chance we sign Edwin. Bautista might still be on the table as long as he's willing to play the bulk of his games at 1B with some occasional starts in the OF. However its more likely that Shapkins focus on signing reinforcements for the outfield now. Guys like Joyce/Pagan/Reddick/Fowler/etc.

If we're coming off another playoff appearance and looking to challenge again then maybe not.

If 2017 is a step back I'd expect us be looking to trade Donaldson, Tulo, and Martin. I really hope that doesn't happen though.

2012: 522 PA, 119 OPS+

2013: 657 PA, 123 OPS+

2014: 401 PA, 75 OPS+

2015: 639 PA, 127 OPS+

2016: 618 PA, 108 OPS+

5 year total 2857 PA

'weighted' average OPS+ = (522/2837)(119) + (657/2837)(123) + (401/2837)(75) + (639/2837)(127) + (618/2837)(108) =- 113

turns out the simple average OPS+ for those 5 years is 110 , so about the same.

I am mostly looking at the total 199 RBI over the past 2 seasons.

Also consider these 'clutch' stats for 2016:

RISP, 2 out: .296/.367/.620

high leverage: .260/.322/.500

Morales can hit well, and you are right about his clutch stats. kind of Anti Saunders.

What good are batters who hit 25 hr with nobody on base, yet cant hit .200 with men on.

the game is all about scoring more runs than your opponent.

So basically we have substituted Moralas and Smoak for EE. This team is going back to the shitter...

Too early for this, lot's of off season left.

Morales numbers will improve at Rogers Centre. His floor for all of next season is 30 HR.

Signing smoak is the really annoying part. We should be exploring alternatives at first right now and the money we give smoak would surely be the top of his market as a fallback option.

You drink much koolaid?

Look at his spray chart in this thread. 30 HR next season for Morales is a conservative estimate.

Is Smoak's contract tradeable?

The only way EE signs with the Jays now is if he comes back to them for some reason. He would have to either not find the market he expected or just have major second thought about leaving. I wouldn't go as far as stating the odds are zero but there not all that higher than that either. It sucks but what can you do? For EE to stay he needed to meat the team half way, he said all the right things but he and his agent weren't actually willing to make the necessary compromise. I don't think anyone has a problem with this team setting limits. It's not that they don't have the payroll or willingness to spend in the short term but they aren't going to make big commitments in the long term. They have Martin, they have Tulo. Don't get me wrong, I like those guys a lot but those contracts have to be playing a big role here. Too many big deals to aging players and the team will find itself in Philadelphia Phillies territory. I'm glad they tried to find common ground. I'm glad they made an offer and put the ball in EE's court but they couldn't let sentiment trump reason.

Players have up and down years. Morales is a year older and health is always a concern. I don't mind morales as a player, but his careeer numbers don't suggest him being a lock for 30hr next year. He definitely could hit 30 and I hope he does

Spanky, give your head a shake.....

Spanks is generally right. Hitting with RISP typically fluctuates greatly year to year and clutch is not a skill.

However. Morales hit much better with RISP in 2016, 2015 and 2013...in fact i went back to 2010 and hes always hit better with RISP.

Career with RISP - wRC+ of 131

Career with bases empty - wRC+ of 107

There might be something to this. He's one of the only hitters I've ever studied to consistently hit better with RISP...and God knows this team struggled to get those 2 outs hits last year. I'll take this as a plus and would love to know if Shatkins put any weight into it.

Yes, because the front office won't make a single other move between now and April

I agree with all this, but trump and reason should never appear in the same sentence again after Tuesday.

you are wrong that clutch is not a skill, you are born with it. You cant learn it. It is the ability to rise to the occasion, the opportunity, instead of getting nervous and either trying too hard or getting so confused that you cant concentrate.

Good closers are very good examples of clutch pitchers.

Pat Tabler had the ability to hit +.500 with the bases loaded.

Molitor, Carter, JB, George Bell, Alomar could all get hits when the game was on the line.

There is a very noticeable trait about HOF batters, they all could hit in the clutch.

After sleeping on this, I hate the 3rd year of this deal. Don't like the idea of committing long term to a guy who has no defensive or speed impact, that's in his mid 30s already, who really is only an average, maybe slightly above average bat.
