Gary Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Half my post somehow got deleted when I typing. I was joking that 10% of 30 HRs is only 3 extra home runs Your math is correct. But the projection isn't.
rydermike Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Your math is correct. But the projection isn't. I know, I had intended to write that I thought he could hit more than 10% which the original poster said, since 10% is only 3. Somehow I deleted that part and didn't notice because I jus clicked post without proofreading
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Those small gains might make all the difference though. Maybe internal metrics like him a hair better than Steamer does. And they think he's a couple runs better on the bases here than in KC for the reasons you state. And they like that he's proven to be comfortable DHing. Add it all together, and they think he's closer to a 2-win guy than a 1-win guy, and they pull the trigger. Would be interesting to see where exactly their internal projections differ from his 2016 and Steamer projections. Yeah you can infer that Toronto likes him more than his projections. Hopefully they are right and this doesn't end up like Billy Butler in Oakland. Could swing either way.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Lets see what Napoli gets.. he's a guy i'd probably have over Morales... but the move made seems very solid.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Time to sign Thames ASAP!!! Two for the price of less then one! Dfa SMOAK and we are even!!! Lol
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Lets see what Napoli gets.. he's a guy i'd probably have over Morales... but the move made seems very solid. But why? He's like the same player as Morales but with big splits. More power, less contact ability.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Before 2014 Morales was the last to sign and he didn't do so until mid season. Now he's basically first. I'm sure the two are related.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Time to sign Thames ASAP!!! Two for the price of less then one! Dfa SMOAK and we are even!!! Lol Absolutely. I would love that. 2/8M probably gets it done. But why? He's like the same player as Morales but with big splits. More power, less contact ability. Yeah, don't understand his logic. Morales' power could also play up more in RC. He could be a 35-40 HR hitter playing half his games in the RC.

I'm sure the two are related. Yeah. He fired Boras and he probably told the new guy (Wasserman) not to f*** around. Works for the Jays and their bird in the hand philosophy.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Well... If this $160m payroll is true that's been floated out there (and I have no doubt that it isn't), and our new 1B/DH combo is Smoak and Morales... That leaves a lot of cash to finish off the OF and bring in a couple of BP arms. Perfect. No way on earth I want big $$$ spent at 1st and DH. Spend on premium positions

Maico450 Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Nothing to dislike about this move. Its Nov 11th. First significant move of the off season and a whole lot of complaining?? This move was about a fulltime DH. All Morales has to do is hit. Which he does very well. I don't see this as shutting Edwin out. The jays can still sign him. However having Morales and Dexter Fowler added to the lineup, for Edwins salary, may be a more productive value.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 But why? He's like the same player as Morales but with big splits. More power, less contact ability. I came to this realization the other day, when BB brought it up. And likely for more cash.

Gary Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Morales floor at Rogers Centre is 30 HR.

Gary Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 How would Morales look in left field? Better or worse than Colabello?

If we spend 20-25 million on him, that's approximately 40 million tied up in our 1B/DH positions alone. We still need to spend on the bullpen and the outfield. It's time to let Edwin go.

Long time lurker. Figured it was time to join. Exciting times to be posting on here. Offseason's gonna be fun.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Edwins agent already stated that they were prepared to offer a home town discount. Edwin wants to play for the Jays. So at 20 mill/yr for Edwin, you have 31 mill a year for 200+ rbi,s every year. That is excellent value. Add Dexter Fowler into the mix, and add another 80-100 RBIs and lengthen the lineup that much more. This is the first of many moves to come.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 C'mon KK... please? Look I know who he is but I don't want to keep playing whack-a-mole with new identity after new identity. "Gary" hasn't really done anything yet. I'm willing to give him some rope. If he keeps pushing the stupidity envelope, he knows what will happen.

That's $31 million spent in the offseason already just on the 1B/DH positions alone, and also not accounting for the outfielder(s) we need and bullpen we need to shore up. Fowler or Reddick aren't gonna come cheap either. I'm just saying, $20 million for signing Edwin doesn't seem like the most efficient use of funds here. I would much rather we target someone like Holliday or Pearce to play 1B. Not as good individuals hitters as Edwin, but we don't need them to be if we have a better balanced team. Plus they'll come for less than half the cost of Edwin.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 They got Morales, going to get Reddick or Fowler i think, another arm for the pen and then will sit tight. Thats how i see Shatkins rolling. Agreed And save some $$ for the trade deadline when we see what's working and what's not
