Laika Community Moderator Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Then he's a perfect EE replacement. Well, he's a lot worse at hitting.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Why not? Doesn't impact a potential signing on Edwin, and adds as a cushion if Edwin's contract demands are stupid. Last 3 years he's been worth 0.8 WAR combined. Projected to be worth barely past half a win with a 109 wRC+, which is bad for a DH. I don't want to sign Edwin for over 75 Million but that doesn't mean sign a bad player for 30 Million.
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Giving him 3 guaranteed years would be gross. Other than hit the occasional HR, what else does he do well?
Gary Verified Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 So signing Morales would put and end to the EE era, right? No room for both.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Hasn't Morales always been a solid 1B? I can't imagine them using him in the OF Maybe an emergency OF. Yeah I think his reputation at 1B is decent. If you look at anything (DRS, UZR, fans scouting report) his numbers are average or slightly above.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 So signing Morales would put and end to the EE era, right? No room for both. Says who?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 The random guy who broke the Stanton contract is tweeting that we have signed Morales to a 3 year deal, 33 mil Lets hope lightningin a bottle doesn't strike twice. Certainly don't want him for 3 years. 2 tops preferably 1.
Gary Verified Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Says who? To me that's what logic says. But I'm asking.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Giving him 3 guaranteed years would be gross. Other than hit the occasional HR, what else does he do well? Makes contact, switch hits, has decent slash numbers (AVG and OBP). If they give him 3/$33 they are only paying him to be a slightly below average player. He really doesn't have to do much to be worth that money.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Keep in mind that Toronto needs a DH and a 1B. Morales doesn't preclude Edwin. Although of course in an ideal world at least one of your two 1B/DH options would have defensive utility elsewhere on the field.
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Signing both EE and Morales makes no sense because both are DH/1B guys. Those two would combine to cost 35 mill a season, and you'd still have a hole in the OF to fill along with the bullpen. If Morales is signed, EE is a goner.

Just cherry pick his last 2 years and it looks a lot better. 120 wRC+ switch hitter. It looks like his defense was solid at 1st last year and his overall WAR #'s are suppressed by his defensive metrics (and base running), which are dragged down simply b/c he was a DH and by being stuck out in RF for 30+ innings this past year. If true - I'm completely fine with this type of hitter, but I was hoping we'd go after some more versatile players and perhaps someone who wasn't such a clog on the bases. I'd also much rather him on a 2 year deal. I guess Gurriel Jr. needs some Cuban fans.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Does this mean no Matt Holliday? Dammit.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I really hope this isn't true Morales is actually a below average hitter as a lefty.

With 1-1.5 Win players you shouldn't be paying close to market value for a Win since below average players are easy to find. So Even if he puts up 4 WAR over 3 years I think thats still a bad signing.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I don't mind the AAV but 3 years is too much IMO.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Like why not sign Steve Pearce for similar money? He's a better hitter and has way more positional flexibility.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I didn't realize it was a random baseball fan posting. I dont want Morales here, he is definately not the answer.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Because he doesn't want to sign in Toronto? This isn't a video game. Actually in video games players have interest levels and if its low you probably won't sign the guy. It can actually go lower if you lowball him as well. I also don't think Steve Pearce would be against signing here. He would have at-bats at 1B, 2B, and a corner Outfield spot. Who knows about Travis status either!

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 His splits were reversed vs. his career last yera.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Morales is like tesla that needs a refill at each base to get around the bases.
