We are going to see him doing the interview like a drunk guy.. I don't want him to stay as a manager until he goes into his coffin
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Let me clue you in chum It is very hard to make the playoffs in baseball It is even harder to win a round or two and make the league championship This team has had two consecutive league championship appearances Lay the f*** off Gibby
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I'm not upset about this, but I'm certainly not happy.
flafson Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I'm perfectly happy with him. Could we do better? Maybe, could we do worse? Definitely.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Two straight exciting playoff runs. They're not going to dump the manager. It would be bad optics and bad for the clubhouse. Gibby makes his bonehead moves but he's not all that bad.
sg11 Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 If I heard this yesterday I'd probably be enraged. Perfect scapegoat for an underachieving team next spring. (hopefully not the case on underachieving)
intrigid Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 You guys do realize that fans of 29 out of 30 clubs every year have disappointing ends to their season, right?
youngtea Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Considering they didn't give Gibby an extension it means they want one more year to see what happens. I suppose if things go bad next year the first one to take the blame will be him.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 You shouldn't get fired after back to back LCS runs. This season was a success.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I didn't expect him to get fired but would have been nice. Probably his last year though barring a dream season.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I don't see how anyone could be surprised by this, the team has been too successful for the past two seasons to justify a firing.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Impossible to pry Francona away now, he's going to the Wold Series
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I don't see how anyone could be surprised by this, the team has been too successful for the past two seasons to justify a firing. Exaclty We could do better and we could do worse
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 will be his 10th season as a major league manager.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Fun fact: Gibbons is 103rd all-time in manager wins and could move into the top 85 next year.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I don't see how anyone could be surprised by this, the team has been too successful for the past two seasons to justify a firing. But they have been successful in spite of him. Imagine a manager with this talent actually making good decisions. That would be awesome man.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 But they have been successful in spite of him. Imagine a manager with this talent actually making good decisions. That would be awesome man. it really wouldn't have made much difference in this series, unfortunately.
sg11 Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 it really wouldn't have made much difference in this series, unfortunately. Agreed. This series was a battle with few mistakes and little to no margin for error.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Here's a question for the people who are upset at Gibbons staying: When was the last time the Blue Jays had a manager you liked? Do you see where this question is headed? This is a case of the grass being greener on the other side.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 If you guys think that managers make or break a season I have some bad news for you. Even with how well Francona managed his bullpen situation, put anyone in the Indians dugout that meshes chemistry-wise, they would have won the series versus the Jays. We did s*** against all their pitchers. Miller was just the cherry on top of the pie. But we scored 8 runs in 5 games, and I don't care who you put in our dugout, we'd still lose. Even day-to-day lineups really don't make all that much of a difference. Didn't really see any difference when we flipped Tulo and Martin. And surprisingly enough, no one complained about Martin hitting 5th until the ALCS, and when we crushed Texas, Martin was hitting 5th and Tulo hitting 6th. There are dumb things Gibby does, but so do other managers. I'd rather have a guy who was able to manage a team with so many egos like Bautista, Edwin, Martin, Tulo, etc. and not have them clash with each other throughout the entire season than take a risk on an analytics guy who might not be the best people person.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I think on a contending team with veterans like the Blue Jays have, Gibbons' laid back personality is definitely a positive. I guess this is a sign that the Jays will be all-in again for 2017. If they were going to do a short rebuild and retool for 2018, then I think Gibbons should be gone.
Drumcliff Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 To me, Gibbons is the Pat Tabler of managers: predictable, unimaginative, repetitive, pedestrian, a company man, etc. He knows what he knows, he likes what he likes, and he ain't changing. You could do worse, I suppose, and many teams have, but you would really like to believe you could do better. Disappointing he's coming back, but hardly surprising.
mikebel111 Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Fine by me. Gibbons is a good manager and not the worst manager and worst person in the history of the human race as some people seem to say around here. He has his odd moments but he is a nice manager for this team. He likes the team. Players love him. Good enough for me Welcome back Gibby!

Yeah you were getting pretty heated for a polar bear. (I'll show myself out.)
