A Manger has little to zero impact on the total amount of wins at the end of the year.

In most cases that is probably true but Gibbons is not most cases. He really shines in the playoffs.

It's tough to say because I don't really follow the other teams managers all that much.

Gibbons makes some bad moves but there is no way I'd take Ned Yost over him. Gibbons' lineups are probably about 80-90% of where they should be which probably isn't too bad meanwhile Yost will bat one of the worst hitters in baseball at leadoff because "we win when he hits leadoff." The players, outside of the spats he got in before, all seem to like him. We've got quite the collection of characters, that can't be the easiest bunch to manage. I like that he's willing to get tossed more than any other manager in the league. He doesn't do too much on the basepaths and it seems like we don't really bunt that much, unless it's just a god awful hitter at which point it's not that big of a deal imo. I also think that there have been a lot of times when we could have escalated our beefs with other teams and have chosen not too. Gibby should get some credit for managing all of those situations pretty well.

He's also done some dumb s*** that works out, even regarding his bullpen. He pretty much threw a struggling Jason Grilli in to the setup role and that worked out well. Looks like Benoit and the 7th inning might be working out similarly. It does seem like we often run in to "Player X is unavailable out of the pen tonight" because they have been used so many days in a row. But that's also kind of a product of having 3 or 4 guys you can actually count on on the rest being garbage.

I'd take him over Yost and I'd take him over Farrell. I'd also take him over Bannister. That guy is dumb as s***. I remember in the playoffs last year he went to Chi Chi Rodriguez in a very clutch spot who predictably was shelled. At the beginning of the year Gibby went with some of his garbage guys in key spots but not even he is dumb enough to do that in the playoffs. Though Gibby did burn David Price in a blowout game last year which was DUMB.

I watch a lot of Showalter and as much as I hate that ******* I can't really say Gibby is any better than him but he's also not really much worse. I'd probably give the edge to Showalter though they are both probably middle of the pack managers. I watch a lot of Walt Weiss. He doesn't really stand out one way or the other to me either.

Gibbons is more of a player's manager than a tactician, IMO. With that said, is the article suggesting his lack of intentional walks as being a bad thing? There are very few situations where it is necessary.

Gibbons' positives:

- Good at managing players (may have learned from his first stint with the Jays)

- Decent with platoons, when necessary

- Doesn't do too many stupid bunts/IBBs

Gibbons' negatives:

- Poor bullpen management

- Takes way too many replay challenges, even when it's obvious the call won't be overturned

- Has trouble adjusting to NL environment

As an aside, judging a manager by one-run game record is dumb.

Hi R.A.

They wanted Stroman to pitch game 5.

So they saved their runner-up-for-the-Cy-Young-Award-hired-gun-Ace the embarrassment of riding pine in favour of a kid in the big one by rendering the "#1" unavailable to start. (Plus, no leads safe in that bandbox.)

I agree

Baseball fans, including me, don't notice the bad decisions as much for other teams because we don't know their rosters and recent performance as well.

Heh, this is great too.

I hated the red sox so, so much then. Funny that Marlon Byrd was actually as good as Crawford. I remember arguing about that for an entire offseason.

Literally a month has passed since ESPN called John Gibbons the worst manager. After that our team has fell apart and John Gibbons has had a public outburst with our MVP.

How many close games should we lose before you all see Gibbons is a s*** manager.

Small bright side to no playoffs or early depature is Gibbons being fired.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that he was ranked last because of the "1-run game record". That's complete and utter ********. 1-run record doesn't matter.

Its not his fault the team is s***ing the bed right now, but yes I do want him gone. Because he's dumb.

He makes a lot of dumb and questionable decisions, and Im sure there are many other options out there.

However, he is not the reason we are 3-9 in September. It's not his fault, Donaldson is hurt, and nobody on the team can hit. He really hasnt cost us a game this month due to a bad decision.

10th best reliever and September call up in a 2 run game

If Osuna came in and pitched all the way to the 9th striking out everyone along the way we would have still lost.

Today is the day which showed that John Gibbons is the worst manager in the league.. Grilli has been grilled for several games..

He is but nothing we can do until the offseason.

It could have been better to let Osuna pitch three days in a row.. Betances came into today's game after throwing 40 pitches yesterday

Id rather keep Osuna as fresh as possible. Grilli should have got the job done but blew it. Gibby kept pitchers in too long after that as well.

Grilli should have been lifted after he allowed a home run to Teixeira.

The issue was using Cecil for one batter when he was fine to finish the game. He struggled and had some terrible luck and now hes been reduced to a one batter pitcher.

A manager using his best available reliever to close a game is hardly a questionable decision. How about we give the slightest bit of blame to Jason Grilli.

Oh he s*** the bed but hes been struggling. And used a lot. Hes also 39 years old. I would have preferred we didn't push him

Jays win the World Series.

Fire Gibbons the next day.

That's still my dream, and god dammit, I'm going to hope for it even if I know it won't happen.

Yeah I think Grilli has to have high leverage situations taken away from him for the time being. He's been pretty damn bad lately and Cecil and Biagini have been better.

Mark my words, Benoit/Grilli will cost us at least 1 game in the playoffs.

Gibbons will be our biggest liability come playoff time. His bullpen management was horrible horrible during ALCS last year.

He is also a manager who doesn't have clear strategy to the game.. He is just acting like a spectator.

He need to utilize more SAC BUNT when we need to score

I remember Benoit allowed game tying grand slam to David (Druggie) Ortiz back in 2013... At least Benoit is more reliable than Grilli.. (and now Benoit is injured.. sigh)
