Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 ummmm... Ned Yost puts the worst hitter in baseball at the top of his lineup. Also always starts fights with other teams. I'm not a fan of Gibbons but there's just no way he's last. I'll easily take him over Showalter, Yost, Mattingly, Matheny, Bannister, Baker and probably a few more.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 After any tough loss, practically every team's message board (or blog) has a number of whiny geeks calling for their manager's head. It's pretty much universal, so guess that means managers across baseball sure are responsible for a lot of their team's losses ...

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 It is a good thing that managers really don't play a huge outcome in a season. 1 maybe 2 game variance. Still i hate him for the sole fact he took about a month to find out Travis was better then Barney and Pillar (hitting him behind both more or less.)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I would take Gibby over Farrell any day of the week. Farrell made so many head scratching decisions it was frustrating. Remember when he stuck with Cordero is the closer? And the players clearly lacked confidence in him At least they all seem to like playing for Gibbons That's *something* But yes as a tactitian he is leagues behind Maddon, Boachy, etc

Still i hate him for the sole fact he took about a month to find out Travis was better then Barney and Pillar (hitting him behind both more or less.) What about when Cito literally put Fransico Cordero in every game to close and he clearly was terrible and blew everyone? Pretty sure Cito costed more then 1 to 2 games. What abot Farell just being a terrible manager. Pretty sure he costed more than 1-2 games. Gibbons throwing relievers into the tough spots that shouldn't even be in the game unless it's a blowout has costed us more than 2 games this year alone. Managers make the lineup, decides who gets to play when and play a part in the game. If you honestly say you don't care if you had Maddon over Gibbons you're lying.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 What difference does it make? It really doesn't matter. A Manger has little to zero impact on the total amount of wins at the end of the year. Yeah, Gibby is dumb but so are a bunch of managers. Players seem to like playing for him and that's important in attracting talent to come here.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Bringing Cordero in a game because of vetrin presentz > bringing Ryan Tepera in to face Manny Machado in a close game. Being loyal to vets is at least something you can rationalize, even though it's moronic when the vet is no longer good. But making bonehead moves that make no sense is a Gibbons staple. I will give Gibby credit as he does not abuse pitch counts and young players have been able to develop under his watch, but that's the only positives I can think of. He manages on gut rather than match ups. He's basically Ned Yost. He won a title so maybe there's hope.

Or indignant to your fallacy, that managers really matter in the grand scheme of things, everyone questions the manager no matter what he does, and the end result falls on absolutely nothing if they win, or square on his shoulders if they lose, the life of a manager, in itself.

So they saved their runner-up-for-the-Cy-Young-Award-hired-gun-Ace the embarrassment of riding pine in favour of a kid in the big one by rendering the "#1" unavailable to start. (Plus, no leads safe in that bandbox.)

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 It's tough to say because I don't really follow the other teams managers all that much. Gibbons makes some bad moves but there is no way I'd take Ned Yost over him. Gibbons' lineups are probably about 80-90% of where they should be which probably isn't too bad meanwhile Yost will bat one of the worst hitters in baseball at leadoff because "we win when he hits leadoff." The players, outside of the spats he got in before, all seem to like him. We've got quite the collection of characters, that can't be the easiest bunch to manage. I like that he's willing to get tossed more than any other manager in the league. He doesn't do too much on the basepaths and it seems like we don't really bunt that much, unless it's just a god awful hitter at which point it's not that big of a deal imo. I also think that there have been a lot of times when we could have escalated our beefs with other teams and have chosen not too. Gibby should get some credit for managing all of those situations pretty well. He's also done some dumb s*** that works out, even regarding his bullpen. He pretty much threw a struggling Jason Grilli in to the setup role and that worked out well. Looks like Benoit and the 7th inning might be working out similarly. It does seem like we often run in to "Player X is unavailable out of the pen tonight" because they have been used so many days in a row. But that's also kind of a product of having 3 or 4 guys you can actually count on on the rest being garbage. I'd take him over Yost and I'd take him over Farrell. I'd also take him over Bannister. That guy is dumb as s***. I remember in the playoffs last year he went to Chi Chi Rodriguez in a very clutch spot who predictably was shelled. At the beginning of the year Gibby went with some of his garbage guys in key spots but not even he is dumb enough to do that in the playoffs. Though Gibby did burn David Price in a blowout game last year which was DUMB. I watch a lot of Showalter and as much as I hate that ******* I can't really say Gibby is any better than him but he's also not really much worse. I'd probably give the edge to Showalter though they are both probably middle of the pack managers. I watch a lot of Walt Weiss. He doesn't really stand out one way or the other to me either.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Like someone just said, Gibbons has loyalty to vets but also allows young players to get a chance. If Cito was still our manager, Stroman, Sanchez, Travis, etc would probably still be in AAA. Gibby puts the best players in the best opportunities to succeed.

JFD Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Fans of every single team say that about their manager, while also being completely ignorant of so many things. These include injuries, player confidence, influence from players and management, advanced statistics that aren't public, and more. That is true but in Gibby's case there are just too many situations that prove he's a complete moron.
