reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I had a long hiatus posting on the board, and now that I have been reading again I have a few suggestions I'd like to post: -The main posters are the same. Let's be honest but there are many fans out there who, if they were attracted to the board, would be valuable contributors and give different views that I think a lot of us would appreciate. From what I remember a lot of people are very rude to people who have different perspectives and this is probably driving away activity on the forum. -The threads are too crowded. I think I speak for a lot of people on this- when news comes out it too often gets lumped in around baseball, prospects or some related thread. I think encouraging more threads would make it better for people who come here for the latest news stories. I do not see a problem with creating smaller threads as long as they are news or opinion based and obviously not blatant troll threads. -When I left, threads were getting locked because of a few posters ruining the fun for everyone. Not locking threads so that people can talk about a trending topic would go a long way with improving board activity. Most people enjoy talking about controversial topics in general, so a few idiots shouldn't ruin an interesting discussion. Overall I think the board is doing a poor job attracting new and potentially interesting members, and I wanted to share a few of the main reasons I think need to be considered.

This board is what it is... The main posters like very few threads and short posts... I prefer lots of threads... In good forums you can scan the thread titled and get a feel for what is up... In this forum every day has the exact same 5 threads at the top...
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Perhaps there should be an Around Baseball sub-forum? Would include the megathread for small moves but also encourage new threads for bigger ones. Not that there's any reason we can't do that now, but who knows.

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 This board will never attract new active posters. If you're not familiar with our common town folk, this place can be pretty discouraging from an outsider's point of view.
flafson Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I agree that it would be much better if people would be more tolerant to others, especially new people, or at least put *sarcasm* mark or something that they will understand you're just making fun instead of insulting someone.

If you're not familiar with our common town folk, this place can be pretty discouraging from an outsider's point of view. I joined with this account two years ago and only really started actively posting around January of last year (I also joined under another name in 2013, but can't remember it since that season was s*** and I stopped coming around). I still don't know most of the folks here that well and am totally out of the loop on lots of inside jokes, but I get by just fine. I agree it takes a thicker skin to become a regular, though.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Meh. His board is way more tolerant than most others. I like it the way it is.

I've encouraged some avid baseball fan buddies to join, but they dislike the petty politics on here.

As someone that is on the BJ Facebook group (to recruit new members when I have time to filter through the crap to find those that could add something to this board, I would say that we still have the best board around. I'm not disregarding your feedback. I can just say that we have our reasons for monitoring new threads. As for the big threads like Around Baseball. I am incredibly busy in my job right now (4 weeks out from the Opening Ceremonies of the Ontario Summer Games for those of you in the Mississauga area, all 34 sports are free to watch) and I like that I can pretty much get everything I need in the one thread. For the record I agreed in the off season when every thread seemed to get merged. Anyway I can appreciate that you don't like the board, but it's not likely to change in the ways that you would like.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 This isn't really a suggestion or a criticism, but it's what I like to see. I think threads like 'Should we extend Dickey and 'Who should we trade for at the deadline ' generate fantastic discussion. When a great topic like that is brought up in a big thread, sometimes it gets buried quickly. I'd like board members to feel more free to make threads like that, while also understanding that there has to be a limit.

Only thing that bugs me is when you click on new posts it doesn't always take you to where you left off and you have to navigate back to try and find the last post you remember.

From what I remember a lot of people are very rude to people who have different perspectives and this is probably driving away activity on the forum. It's the f***ing internet. If someone is such a pussy that they get their feelings hurt or are too scared to open their mouth for fear of ridicule, they're probably not going to be all that useful contributors. I disagree with many people on a variety of things, particularly in the fired up political threads in the off-topic section, and I do just fine. -The threads are too crowded. I think I speak for a lot of people on this- when news comes out it too often gets lumped in around baseball, prospects or some related thread. I do not see a problem with creating smaller threads as long as they are news or opinion based and obviously not blatant troll threads. This I agree with. I rarely participate in the really long threads, and when I do I tend to forget about the conversation. A lot like what someone else said - it's too easy to lose your place, especially if you're away from this board for a few days and 15 pages worth of stuff is added onto when you last participated. This last point is fair, but I haven't seen a lot of that. The threads I recall being locked trended seriously off-topic or devolved into name calling or other nonsense.

STLJaysFan Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I haven't been to Toronto in 12 years so sometimes I have a tough time following when someone mentions something in the city, like a restaurant or a street, or anything else that a person who's not familiar with the GTA on a regular basis wouldn't know off the top of their head. Heck, it's been so long ago that I've stepped foot in the 416 that the Leafs actually won a playoff series!!! It seems like a different lifetime that I watched Joe Nieuwendyk hang Patrick Lalime out to dry in game 7 at a bar at York University!
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I for one love this board. Also I can't stand the whole thing about 'main posters being mean' to people. If anything lots of the main posters have de-escalated from the old board. When I started I was welcomed and taught lots of things, and lots of new guys are treated the same. But if you come here as a homer and refuse to accept criticism, or you're attitude is s*** and you get s***** attitude back and you don't like it, this isn't the place for you then. Also this is a normal vBulliten-type board and crowded threads are usually a classic characteristic of these forums, I think King is right, if you prefer smaller more organized threads the Reddit might be the place for you... Although if you think our community is hostile.. Lol

In my head I'm really just translating it to, "the main posters are too knowledgeable and should try to dumb it down a bit." I can't think of a single time where a guy started posting and people shat on him/her for no reason. Half of these "new posters" are Kang/LTR/MJ anyway and Spanky sniffs them out like the good troll hound he is.

Laika Community Moderator Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 The main posters are generally the same, and the group is slow to evolve, but this board is like a major league roster. It's highly competitive and hard to break through. And if it wasn't like that, the content quality would suffer. Still happens sometimes though. Some people retire (randy) or hit the DL (kirksaw). New posters break through from time to time and it's usually a good story. We have a lot of good relief posters and pinch hitters on this board that maybe aren't regulars but should get more credit for what they do.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 This board is candy land compared to most places on the internet. As long you don't ignore advanced stats and don't bring up pitcher wins, and batting average as arguing points nobody really attacks you. Most fights on this board stem from non baseball related issues and atleast one party is intoxicated.

Great stuff guys. Thanks for your predictable replies to this post in advance.
