burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Ugh I think this is a great deal for the Sox. Pomeranz has 2 years left after this season and even though Espinoza looks like he will be really good he's still so far away. To not have to give up any additional prospects I think the Sox win the deal. Also makes it that much harder for the Jays this year.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Pomeranz is a great add. People want to s*** on his fastball fine its not even that bad while his off-speed is quite good. Hasn't had issues getting swing and miss this season. "Top pitching prospect" or not hes in A-Ball. Red Sox farm system isn't exactly lacking talent. Pomeranz comes with control as well. Now since the Padres are in full fire sale mode. Lets go get Upton. I wonder if anyone will blow them out of the water for Myers although I wouldn't trade him its the Padres.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Pomeranz is good. If he continues pitching like this for the next 2.5 years, the Red Sox got a good deal. Pretty steep price to pay, though. No surprise with Dombrowski. Dude hates prospects as much as AA does.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Red Sox traded for a guy that the Jays will destroy easily
Seanie Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Pomeranz IS really good since he figured out his curve is his dominant pitch. Great trade for the Red Sox... I'm super envious.

He started throwing his curve twice as much this year, it's the sole reason for his new found success.

43211234 Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Pretty unrelated but Red Sox prospect Michael Kopech hit 105 mph last night.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Pretty underwhelming deal for the Padres. I suspect they could have gotten multiple quality prospects had they waited.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Maybe another way of looking at the RedSox "control" of Pomeranz for the next 2.5 yrs is with his suspect health, they could just be pissing away that money for 2.5 yrs.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Pretty unrelated but Red Sox prospect Michael Kopech hit 105 mph last night. Jesus! Even if it's a hot gun that's no less than 102.

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Agree Pomeranz is a great add, love the deal for the Sox. It'd be nice to see the Jays make a similar, under the radar trade.

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Under the radar? It's the best available pitcher (if you believe the Braves GM) for a top 50 prospect. For us who are on the forum sure. He's less of a household name than perhaps anyone else as valuable.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Padres basically turned Yonder Alonso and Marc Rzepczynski in to Espinoza. Wow.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Under the radar? It's the best available pitcher (if you believe the Braves GM) for a top 20 prospect. Fixed
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Hudson Belinsky @hudsonbelinsky 7m7 minutes ago The Red Sox have signed arguably the most talented pitcher in the 2016 draft class. Can confirm Jason Groome has signed for $3.65MM ...and they quickly replace the prospect they just traded.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 For us who are on the forum sure. He's less of a household name than perhaps anyone else as valuable. That's not really how that works though. The guy just made the All-Star team in the midst of having a breakout season, it's not an under-the-radar move because you haven't noticed how good he's been. He's not "a household name" because he plays in a division the Blue Jays rarely face off against and plays on a s***** team. IIRC he was also rumoured to have been on the block by some sources, so it's not like him getting moved came out of nowhere.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Fixed I wouldn't have him there, but some publications do.

He's under the radar to casual fans in Ontario. Most Jays fans won't realize that the Red Sox acquired a very good pitcher. Obviously for people who follow the game it's a pretty big move for them. Relax lol
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I wouldn't have him there, but some publications do. Because he's a Red Sox prospect? I'm pretty sure he's a consensus top 20 prospect.

He's not a red Sox prospect, but it wouldn't matter either way. The fact that I'd have him 5-10 spots lower than Law and BA is hardly outrageous. He's got a ton of development time left and also a lot of risk. If given the choice, I'd take comparably ranked position players like Arcia and Frazier or a more advanced arm with the same upside like Berrios.

I bet it's hard to appreciate the zip on his fastball over the radio.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 (edited) BA had Espinoza 15 on their mid 2016 season list http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/midseason-top-100-prospects/#us5cD7j13HOqbZri.97 Pre-season video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNDI3YKo9XY Edited July 15, 2016 by G-Snarls
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Talk about a bunch of sheep, holy s***. It's as if there's no chance that Berrios will be a better pitcher because a bitter old Jays scout says so.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I really hope in a few years Espinoza turns into Syndergard and Pomeranz becomes a 5th string starter. I'll just feel better.
